2026-2027 Service Projects - September 2nd

Hello, Rotarians!

It’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work on our 2026–27 Service Projects!  At our Wednesday, September 2 lunch meeting, our Service Project Leads will be hosting a table for their projects and inviting you to get involved. Stop by the projects that interest you, learn more about how you can help, and sign up right at the table.

And there’s a little friendly competition! Our Project Leads will be decorating their tables to reflect the theme of their service project, so be sure to check them all out and see which one catches your eye.

But that’s not all! Every member attending the meeting will be entered into a drawing for a $400 gift certificate to Fleming’s Steakhouse.  How cool is that?

We’ll also be drawing raffle prizes for Rotarians who earned five or more service points last year—another great reason to join us!

So, mark your calendar for Wednesday, September 2, and come ready for some fun, fellowship, and service. You won’t want to miss it!

Let’s make the 2026–27 Rotary year one to remember as we come together to make a difference in our community.

How Energy Shapes Tucson's Future!
 
Join us for an engaging discussion with Susan Gray as she frames Tucson Electric Power’s role in supporting our community today and preparing for the future. The presentation will explore what it takes to deliver safe, reliable and affordable energy in a fast-changing environment.
 
Rotary members will hear about the people, planning and investments behind the power we count on every day, along with timely topics affecting Tucson’s economy and quality of life. The discussion will also touch on how TEP partners with customers, supports local businesses and contributes to nonprofit organizations and volunteer efforts across the region.
 
Whether you’re interested in energy affordability, economic development, sustainability or the franchise agreement on the November ballot, this presentation offers a clearer view of how reliable power supports the daily life, growth and resilience of our region.
 
Biography: 
Susan Gray is Chief Executive Officer of Tucson Electric Power (TEP), UniSource Energy Services, and their parent company, UNS Energy Corporation. She began her career as an engineering intern at TEP and now leads the organization with a values-driven approach that fosters a culture of safety, recognition, and transparency. Susan supports economic development in the communities TEP serves through her role as Board Chair of The Chamber of Southern Arizona. She also contributes her expertise through service on local and national boards, advancing collaboration and innovation across the energy industry.

What's on Your Mind with Pima County Government? - August 19th

What’s on your mind about Pima County Government?  Pima County District 1 Supervisor Rex Scott is happy to discuss anything related to Pima County government.  Come with your questions!
 
Biography:  Pima County Supervisor Rex Scott was first elected to represent District One in 2020 and was re-elected in 2024. He has been married to a fellow career educator since 1994 and they are the parents of adult twins. For most of those years, the family has lived in District One and the twins are graduates of Mountain View High School in the Marana Unified School District.
 
Supervisor Scott grew up in Athens, Ohio and earned two bachelor’s degrees from Ohio University, which is in Athens. In 1987, at the age of 24, he became the first Ohio University student elected to serve on Athens City Council. He was re-elected in 1989, chaired the Finance Committee in his second term and joined with two of his colleagues to start the city’s curbside recycling program.
 
In 1991, Supervisor Scott moved to Pima County to take a position teaching social studies at Flowing Wells Junior High School, one of three schools in District One that he served during his career as a public-school educator. In 2000, Supervisor Scott began his 19-year career as an administrator working in both middle and high schools. During that time, he was an assistant principal at Ironwood Ridge High School and the principal at Tortolita Middle School, both District One schools.
 
In his free time, Supervisor Scott enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking in our beautiful deserts and mountains, running on The Loop or in Sabino Canyon and reading. He is a longtime fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Miami Dolphins, which helps him to practice patience! The book that has influenced his values and beliefs more than any other is Man’s Search For Meaning by Viktor Frankl.

Arizona's Copper Future: An Update from Hudbay Minerals
 
Copper is essential to America's energy future, infrastructure, manufacturing, and national security. During this presentation, Jerry Bustamante will provide an update on Hudbay Minerals' Copper World project in Southern Arizona, along with the company's recent acquisition of the Cactus Mine near Casa Grande.Attendees will gain insight into Hudbay's vision for responsibly developing these projects, current milestones, community engagement efforts, and the role these investments play in strengthening Arizona's position as one of the nation's leading copper-producing states. The presentation will also highlight the economic opportunities these projects create through investment, job creation, and supporting the domestic supply of a critical mineral essential to the nation's future.
 
Biography:
 
Jerry Bustamante serves as Senior Manager of Public Affairs for Hudbay Minerals' U.S. Business Unit, where he leads the company's external engagement efforts, including community relations, government affairs, stakeholder engagement, and strategic communications for Hudbay's Arizona operations. Since joining Hudbay in 2015, Jerry has played a key role in advancing the company's major development projects while fostering collaborative relationships with local communities, business organizations, elected officials, and industry stakeholders. His work focuses on building partnerships that support responsible resource development and long-term economic growth throughout Arizona.
 
With more than 25 years of experience in business leadership, public affairs, and association management, Jerry has spent much of his career strengthening Arizona's business community. Prior to joining Hudbay, he served as President and CEO of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce, the Northern Pima County Chamber of Commerce, and the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He also led Southern Arizona operations for the Arizona Small Business Association, advocating for small businesses and economic development across the region.Beyond his professional responsibilities, Jerry remains actively engaged in civic and industry leadership. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of the Arizona Mining Association, the Arizona Small Business Association, and the Greater Vail Area Chamber of Commerce, where he continues to support responsible mining, business advocacy, and regional economic development.
 
Originally from Sonora, Mexico, Jerry was raised in Tucson and is a proud graduate of the University of Arizona. He is widely recognized throughout Arizona as a respected advocate for the mining industry, business development, and meaningful community engagement.
