Supervising Services for Armed Forces Youth and Families
This program will provide an in depth look at the current facilities at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base that are serving the community of Armed Forces youth and their families who have Base access.  This review will include an overview of the existing and somewhat antiquated 1960 vintage building that serves as the main youth facility on the Base.

The program will also address a study that has just been completed by Strong Point Marketing, and funded by the Winers and Diners Base Support group.  Its purpose is to determine who is currently using the youth facilities at DM, how often and what exactly are they using the most.  The study also addressed the needs of teenagers and highlighted the differences between serving that age group compared to younger youth.

The study also looked at what other services are being used by Armed Forces youth in the Tucson area that are off the Base and also to determine what non-profit youth serving agencies are currently active at DM and what other youth services are desired to be made available at DM.  This includes a discussion with local youth serving agencies that have a desire to be engaged in serving youth on the Base.

Finally, the program will provide an overview of the goal of the Youth Center of Excellence, which is to create a model that could be replicated to create other Youth Centers of Excellence at other military bases and/or at other locations in Tucson that are off the Base.
Mystery Editor ~ 2/28/18
VIC JACOBS gave the inspiration with a series of quotes about music, and BILL MOORE and Past President ELLIE PATTERSON led us in the Pledge and Song – an on-key version of the Star Spangled Banner.  Past President SCOTT VAUGHAN introduced our guests and visitors.

We had two Birthday Rotarians: Family Member and multi-talented KANDY HIRSCH quoted the musical “Hamilton” to remind us to look around and notice how lucky we are. KANDY also noted that the road to Heaven is paved with service. DREW VACTOR celebrated 32 years of perfect Rotary attendance, including makeups all over the world.

Everyone’s favorite Paul Harris Presenters, Past President CHARLOTTE HARRIS and President Elect Elect BOB LOGAN gave Paul Harris Pins to the following members:

  • CINDY GODWIN who values Rotary for the way it uses individual relationships to break down borders.
  • MIKE ORCUTT who sees the way Rotary changes lives drastically on an international level.
  • KANDY HIRSCH who sees how Rotary makes its members passionate about helping others.
  • JO DECHATELET who sees Rotary as a positive way to benefit the worldwide community.
  • JO DECHATELET’s son Tom Brandhuber, a Golder Ranch fire fighter.
  • …and PAT ZUMBUSCH celebrating a new grand baby and a slick looking Lute Lid to boot.
Sergeant at Arms Team JEN HOFFMAN and MARCIA KRUMWIEDE skillfully managed our record setting raffle (highest ticket total yet) and organized the following announcements:

  • President CLIFF reminded us to invite new prospective members to the Trident II Social Mixer on 3/8/18 at 5:30 p.m.
  • BILL MOORE presented a Blue Badge to KANDY HIRSCH who was everywhere this meeting – welcome KANDY!
  • MIKE ORCUTT reminded us of the Community Food Bank work project on March 24.
  • President Elect CHUCK SAWYER noted the upcoming Tree Planting opportunity on 3/1/18, 10 a.m. at the John B. Wright Elementary.
  • ROGER HARWELL needs 4th Avenue Street Fair Volunteers to serve beer for Scholarships this weekend.
  • And BRUCE JACOBS listed upcoming Car Show Ticket Sales opportunities – 4th Avenue Street Fair, SAHBA Home Show, and the Festival of Books.

ERNIE MINCHELLA and Tom McKinney, CEO of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra introduced our program: Jose Luis Gomez - Music Director of the TSO. Maestro Gomez spoke about the power of music to change lives, including the lives of the many young composers who have participated in the TSO Young Composer’s Program. Several are now returning to have works commissioned by the TSO. Maestro Gomez invited everyone to hear the TSO as they play in venues ranging from the All Souls Parade to the Hall of Music and Centennial Hall. He also signed a book for our Make Way For Books library: “Skippyjon Jones Snow What”.

President CLIFF closed the meeting with a quote from Benjamin Zander the conductor of the Boston Philharonic Orchestra: “But the conductor doesn't make a sound. He depends, for his power, on his ability to make other people powerful.”
March Madness is Here!!!
MARCH MADNESS BRACKETS!!
Feb. 2018 Blood Drive ~ A Success!

The Rotary Club of Tucson just completed a great Red Cross Blood Drive.   We had 19 folks present to give, and of those 19, they were able to collect 16 whole bloods and 2 Power Reds for an overall collection of 20 pints of blood.  We only fell short of our goal by 2 pints.  Thanks again for all of your help and to the folks that gave of their time and blood. Please know that up to 52 lives are touched through the 20 pints we donated. I thank you, Mike.

4th Annual Rotary Days Service Project ~ 4/7/18
Fourth Annual Rotary Days Service Project Triangle Y YMCA Ranch
APRIL 7 2018 ~ 8:30-4:00

Our fourth annual day of service at the Ranch is open to all Rotarians and friends and families of Rotarians. Please bring your friends and neighbors.  The Ranch has been providing a one week camp experience to under privileged children from Tucson and southern Arizona since 1948 and they need our help.  Please bring the following: sunscreen, hat, landscaping tools of your choice, protective goggles if you have them, weed eater if you have one, and a ladder.  Please put your name on any tools you bring to the ranch.  The maintenance supervisor will have plenty of tools but it always helps to bring some things.

Lunch is included for no charge and will be served at 1:00 PM.  You will have a great opportunity to see all of the ranch facilities.  This is a great opportunity to introduce prospective members to what Rotary is all about.

There is a “Cowboy Night” aka sleepover on Friday night at the ranch.  Modern lodging is available and includes breakfast on Saturday for $35 PP.  We will also have our usual steak and beans dinner for $10 PP.  Thanks again to Chef Darrell Stewart who has helped provide a great dinner the past several years.  You can register on Clubrunner  at the Rotary Club of Tucson website or email Dave Gallaher at dave@tucsonindustrialrealty.com or call 520-907-4983.  There will be carpooling available leaving from the parking lot of Trader Joes at the southeast corner of Oracle and Magee.  Please plan to meet there at 7:30.  It takes about 50 minutes to reach the Ranch from the lot.
Home Hospitality Hosts Needed

Our Home Hospitality events are scheduled for the week of April 16th through the 22nd and we are looking for members to host during the week.  These social events will replace our Wednesday, April 18th lunch meeting.   If you are interested in hosting a small or large group at your home, place of business or even at a restaurant, please let John Lewis know the date, time, location and the amount of guests you will host.  The Club will provide each host $20 per member/guest that attend your event.  So let's have some fun during this Home Hospitality Week!
