Cyber Security, What Can I Do?
The Internet is without a doubt one of the best resources available to us. Unfortunately it's also extremely dangerous if you aren't aware of who and what lurks behind the scenes. Everyone should know how to be safe when surfing the web, installing apps on devices and just plugging in a new appliance.  Michael Peller will break down some of the simpler things that you can do without being a technology geek.  Some of these tips, you undoubtedly may have heard, but many may be new to you.

Recent example of Cyber-security breach that may affect you include the following.

Equifax – a huge company and gatekeeper of personal data, hit by a cyber-attack.
The recent WannaCry ransomware attacked more than 300,000 computers in 150 countries.
Yahoo, in the midst of its sale to Verizon, reported that 1.5 billion user accounts had been stolen.

It is no wonder that cyber security raises important issues for personal privacy and the data protection tools we use to protect it.

Biography ~ Michael Peller

When it comes to experience, few professionals can match Michael Peller. His career as an entrepreneur and cybersecurity specialist reaches back more than 30 years to the early days of personal computers and bulletin board systems.

Mr. Peller studied law at DePaul University and worked for several years as a law clerk at Rosenfeld, Rosenberg, Swartzman, Hafron and Shapiro. While still in school he also discovered a love for computers and internet technology, and his career path was set.  The combination of law and technology set his path for a cyber-security future.

Mr. Peller started his first company, Micro CO-OP, back in 1982. By the early 90’s the Chicago-based business had evolved into Micro Computer Systems and was providing hardware and software solutions across the nation. Eventually he sold this company and moved his family to Tucson, AZ, where he formed his current venture, Pelstar Computer Systems, in 1999.

At Pelstar, Mr. Peller continues to focus on providing cybersecurity solutions and training as well as assessing risk implications of newly emerging technologies. Discover more about how Michael Peller and his team of professionals can help you by visiting Pelstar.com.
President's Note

My Fellow Rotarians,

This year is clicking right along.  It is hard to believe that my year as president is almost at an end!  Wasn’t March Madness AWESOME?  The meetings were exciting, and it was great to see 150+ Rotarians, visitors, and guests at our weekly meetings.  The new members with their enthusiasm and fresh perspectives will bring a renewed energy to our meetings, events, and projects.  I love new members!  Our STAR and mentor programs are outstanding, giving our new members a good footing with all things Rotary and RCOT.  Many thanks go to our Membership Committee for doing yeoman’s work.  I also love our current members!  What a great accomplishment to work with Tucson Clean and Beautiful and plant 260 trees throughout Tucson.  Your generosity with giving to the Annual Fund and all the Paul Harris Fellows we have celebrated recently has been amazing!  As fast as Charlotte and Bob can recognize our much-deserving Paul Harris Fellows, the faster we are making new ones.  We still have quite the backlog of PHFs to recognize – what a great problem to have!  I look forward to closing out a great and fun year.  Thank you for all your support!

President Cliff

Mystery Editor ~ 5/2/18

President CLIFF BOWMAN called the meeting to order right on time.

STEPHANIE AARON gave the invocation. New Member, DAVE EAGLETON led us in a stirring rendition of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” accompanied by ELLIE PATTERSON on the piano.

New member ALICE MILTON nicely handled an unusually long list of visiting Rotarians and guests.

President CLIFF switched the schedule around to allow for maximum time for the presentations by the final four 2018 car show beneficiaries. JONI CONDIT introduced the presenters from: the Southern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering Foundation (SARSEF); Wright Flight; Job Path; and Interfaith Community Services. The presentations were all inspiring and concluded with a membership vote.

2018 Final Four Secondary Beneficiaries

Happy Birthday to: JOE PENNINGTON, who kindly invited the whole club up to his ski chalet in Salt Lake City; JOHN LEWIS, celebrating his 80th birthday (just kidding); Harvard and Cambridge graduate GERRY HALLOWELL; and BOB WEBB, who opined about his mentor George Codd (who, as many may know, was the grandfather of member MARCIA KRUMWIEDE).

President CLIFF introduced our newest Honorary Member with a video.  JP JONES is the Dean of the U of A’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Welcome JP!

WAYNE MEYER presented new member JON PLIMPTON with his blue badge. MARK IRVIN presented the club with a check for $4,850 from the Arizona Bowl. Welcome back to ARNIE JACOBSEN and congratulations on now being a cancer survivor.

Unfortunately, due to the big turnout for the meeting, the vote tallying committee was unable to finish counting the Car Show beneficiaries votes by 1:20 so President CLIFF gave the toast and adjourned the meeting right on time.

One of our customers, Mike Jones invited me to join The Rotary Club of Tucson. Eight years ago it was necessary to take a leave of absence from the club which lasted much longer than expected. After that Farmers Insurance Agent, and today an Independent Insurance Agent specializing in Medicare and individual health related plans.

Thanks to a need to replace an ink cartridge, he stopped by “Cartridge World” and was invited to be Chuck Sawyer’s guest at the next meeting. He is very pleased to again be involved with this organization and to make his contribution to it’s continued success.  Stop by and say hello to Bill Kouba.
