Wright Flight, named after the Wright brothers, inspires youngsters to “reach new heights” in their academic and behavioral development. Founded by Davis-Monthan Air Force officers in 1986, we’ve motivated over 30,000 youngsters to raise their grades in school in order to earn the right to fly a plane. One TUSD Principal said Wright Flight was the best program he had seen in his 35 years in public schools. Wright Flight teaches what it means to give your word or sign a contract & the responsibility behind that action… and if you work hard, the subsequent rewards. Teachers often tell us, it is the most motivating program in their school… perhaps innately so, because everyone dreams of flying. We make those dreams come true.
The mission of ICS is to provide pathways leading to more stable and self-sufficient lives. Founded upon the idea that diverse community and faith partners would better respond to community needs by working together, it has grown from serving hundreds of people in 1985 to over 60,000 people annually. ICS seeks funding to build and open an ICS Southside Office Workforce Development Center to help address unemployment, underemployment, and poverty specifically in the Southside. ICS Workforce Development Centers provide individuals with support on their path to develop the skills and confidence needed to secure a job and stay employed. ICS also offers Bridges Financial Management and Getting Ahead programs that teach financial literacy skills and provide resources to help clients navigate out of poverty.
The ECHO (Educational Community Home Outreach) Program at Keeling Elementary will provide a community school-based approach to achieve student and community transformation by tackling academic and non-academic barriers through before and after school programs, new learning opportunities for students and their families, and health and wellness support. Keeling is in one of the most in-need zip codes in Arizona (85705), resulting in low attendance and student success. Exciting after school programs will entice students to attend classes, and nearly 900 children, plus caregivers, will benefit from the program. Keeling will see increased attendance, test scores, and overall well-being; and increased financial literacy, better job prospects, and greater community connection for caregivers.
Turning away a woman who has no safe place to sleep is one of the heartbreaks we experience at Sister José Women’s Center. Our overnight shelter can only accommodate 42 women, which is not enough to meet the increasing demand in our community. We hope to expand our overnight shelter by 15 beds for women and their pets with nowhere to turn. Here, they will enjoy a hot meal, a safe space to sleep, and supportive services that help women overcome barriers so that they may secure permanent housing. This will add 5460 safe overnights annually. We have received partial funding for this project. Sister José’s has been providing compassionate care to unhoused women fleeing poverty, lack of affordable housing, and domestic violence since 2009. Please join us in leaving no woman out in the cold.
What a pleasure it was to visit the University of Arizona Alfie Norville Gem and Mineral Museum. Located downtown in the old, beautiful, Pima County Courthouse. Not only did 18 Rotarians get to visit with each other in a relaxed setting but we also got to relish Arizona’s mining history as shown through original art work, mining artifacts, gems and minerals. The lighted display of gems and minerals from around the world was breathtaking. I expect that all of us will revisit this Tucson treasure, and will take guests there when they visit Tucson. Please bring any items on the list (focus on the Priority Items) for the residents in shelters and scattered housing. The 2023 Annual District Conference of Clubs will take place on October 6-7 at the Casino Del Sol and is now open for registration www.rotaryd5500.org. We are calling it the “Conference of Clubs” because this year it features breakout and plenary sessions delivering exciting ideas on Club Service Projects, Fundraising, Member Engagement, and more, including a Club Presidents Roundtable on Friday afternoon. The Conference also features outstanding national speakers at every general meal session. For hotel reservations, you must use the District portal to access the block of rooms at lower cost.
This is Bob DeLaney, a member of Catalina Rotary Club of Tucson, and I write to you today in my role as Sergeant-at-Arms at the upcoming District Conference on October 6th and 7th. I need a few good men and women to help folks get where they need to go, answer questions, and help anyone who has a problem (physical or otherwise). I did this last year and had a lot of great helpers. I am looking for folks who might be willing to do a shift of 1.5 to 2.5 hours. You won’t necessarily miss anything but you might be a few minutes late to a breakout meeting helping others get where they need to go.

Participating in a Service Project is one of the best ways to get to know your fellow Rotarians, and it is keeping with our core principle of Service Above Self. This year, for the first time, we will recognize members for service and we’re working on some great year-end prizes.

Rabbi Stephanie Aaron has been a member of our club since 1999. Her father, James M. Stevenson was a member of our Rotary Club 1964-1971+ and 2000-2003. His father and Rabbi Stephanie’s grandfather, Herbert Stevenson, was a founding member of the Rotary Club of Phoenix and a member 1914-1968.
Larry Adamson has been a member of our club since 1971 and served as our club president 1985-86. His brother, Hal Adamson, was a member of our club from 1955-2020 and served as our club president 1961-1962. Their father, Harold Adamson was a member 1925-1978.
John C. Harlow had been a member of our club since 2012. His father, William “Bill” Harlow, has been a member of our club since 1970 and served as our club president 1992-1993. His father and John C’s grandfather, John M. Harlow, was a member 1947-1976. Bill’s twin brother, John M. Harlow, Jr., was a member of the Catalina Rotary Club for around 20 years.
David Lovitt has been a member of our club 1969-1992 and rejoined in 2005. (During the interim he joined the Kachina Rotary Club which was in service 1992-2005.) His father, David “Mac” Lovitt, was a member 1950-1998 and our club president 1954-1955. David’s maternal grandfather, Samuel W. Seaney was a member 1921-1988.
Jeff Ronstadt has been a member of our club since 2006. His father, James “Jim” Ronstadt, has been a member since 1980 and was our club president 1989-1990. Jim’s uncle, Gilbert Ronstadt was a member 1921-1994. Jim’s grandfather, Fred Ronstadt, was a founding member of the club and a member 1921-1954. Brother of Fred, Carlos Ronstadt, was a member 1941-1948. Son of Gilbert and grandson of Fred, Peter Ronstadt, was a member 1982-1992.
Hugh Thompson III. M.D. has been a member since 1989 and was our club president 1997-1998. His father, Hugh C. Thompson, M.D., was a member 1951-1957 and organized the first United States of America community wide polio immunization program in Tucson in the 1960’s.
James Wood, Jr. has been a member of our club since 2016. His father, James Wood, was a member 2000-2016. His father and current Jim’s grandfather, William Wood, was a member from 1970-1999 and club president 1977-1978.
