Stories
Lions, Tigres and Bears
That’s not a typo. Tigres, which is Mexican slang for jaguars, do roam southeastern Arizona. So do mountain lions and bears. Closer to Tucson, such “urban wildlife” as bobcats, coyotes and javelina abound, sometimes within the city limits and to the dismay of newcomers.  The Arizona Game and Fish Department is responsible for managing the state’s wildlife in trust for citizens.  How to best do that poses some unique challenges in greater Tucson, a hotbed of environmental activism while at the same time a community that retains many traditional values of the Old West.  Walking the fine line between the two is Game and Fish’s Tucson office, one of only two in the state with a full-time Urban Wildlife Specialist.   A jaguar in the Santa Ritas, bighorn sheep in the Catalinas, and protestors on the outskirts of town all figure into this presentation about living with urban wildlife, the four-legged and sometimes, the two-legged.

President's Monthly Report ~ 10/10/18
The Car Show is upon us!  Thanks to Bruce Jacobs and the Car Show leadership for our program last week.  It looks like we are in good shape going into the 20thJUST MAKE SURE TO SELL YOUR TICKETS AND TALK TO PAST PRESIDENT CLIFF ABOUT SIGNING UP TO WORK THE SHOW!

Ok, I promise not to shout any more…but I could not be any more passionate about our Car Show.  Since its beginning, our Club delivered a Remarkable signature event that had turned into one of the Top Ten Charity events in Tucson.   Each year I am impressed not only in our ability to deliver a top fundraising event but with the comradery that I see at each and every show, it inspires me.

Every other year we attend the Rotary Large Club Conference, a select group of about 75 Clubs in the United States, that President Elect Bob Logan will be attending in Long Beach this February.  It is a great venue to share ideas, learn from other Clubs and identify best practices.  In 2017, Past President Cliff and I attended the meeting in Nashville, along with Dorinna.  What was clear is that our Car Show is special.  Other large Rotary Clubs are looking for something like what we already have in the TCCS…it is yet another activity that makes us a Remarkable Rotary Club.

So whether this is your first Car Show…or your 12th…look forward to having fun, working with your fellow Rotarians and supporting our Car Show team as we raise money for our Charities.

On to the District Conference, I want to tip my hat to Governor Kirk and the District event organizers; it was perhaps the best District Conference we have had in many years.  Good speakers, breakout sessions and fellowship and a special appearance by President Teddy Roosevelt!

As a Club we were well represented with District Governor Elect Ellie leading the way.  Bob Shaff gave an excellent key note for the Friday Breakfast.  Ashley Elaine York supported Interact and Rotaract and Board Member Fonda Insley was the MC for the event and did an excellent job.  The Friday night hospitality event was well attended and fun…Darrell Stewart’s seafood chowder was a hit!

We also started our Thursday night mixers after taking off the summer.  Kudos to Fonda for organizing our first event at the Maverick.  Although a few members took to the dance floor, most just socialized and had a good time.  A special thanks to member Jay Zucker for the venue and the free appetizers.   We plan to continue to go to new venues for our mixers but also look forward to returning to the Maverick.

On to the TERRIFIC TWELFTH!

YIR,
Chuck Sawyer
President 2018-2019
Mystery Editor ~ 10/3/18
KANDIE VACTOR Car Show Supporter par Excellence gave the inspiration thanking all of our members and all 400 volunteers for helping make the Car Show a great success. President CHUCK led us in the Pledge and Song, “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”. MIKE DALTON introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians.

We had two Birthday Rotarians:

  • Past President and Past Car Show Chairman JIM MURPHY remembered his sponsor George Hawke, spoke about how valuable the Four Way Test has been for his experience, and how much fun it is to have two daughters in Rotary.
  • ROB LAMASTER helps manage the family farm in the Texas Panhandle. ROB’s biggest discovery about Rotary is what took him so long? ROB promised to settle up with JERRY HARRIS for their $1 bet on the Texas Tech / Ole Miss game.

WOCKY REDSAR–WIERZBINSKI introduced our newest member LUCY HOWELL. WOCKY related that LUCY has a twin brother, was long ago a Valley Girl, and now provides financial consulting to Angel Capital and Lea Peterson. LUCY looks forward to focusing on youth and Rotary with groups like Rotaract.

Sergeant at Arms BOBBY LARSON led the raffle and auctioned tickets donated by Past President JON WANG – thank you JON!

We had the following announcements:
  • President CHUCK reviewed the upcoming schedule as affected by the Car Show.
  • President CHUCK also reviewed our current ticket sales (sell more, more, more!!)
  • STACIA DECKER and PAT DAVITT announced that there are 67 seats remaining for the Friday Night Silent Auction and Banquet.
  • Past President CLIFF BOWMAN called for all hands on deck since we are in “desperate” need for volunteers – sign up now!
  • … and Past President JONI CONDIT invited us all to the annual Token Counting Party next Tuesday at 6 PM with help from Rotaract students.

Past President JIM MURPHY returned to the dais to introduce the 2018 Car Show Chairperson, the talented and amazing BRUCE JACOBS. BRUCE loves beer, attended college at the same time as his mom, and loves being a realtor. BRUCE reintroduced the theme for the Car Show “Terrific Twelfth - It Takes a Village" and reviewed the key facts. BRUCE noted that there are 16 days 20 hours and a few minutes until the day after the Car Show. BRUCE thanked our angel supporter, MIKE ANDERSON who has again stepped up as our headline sponsor. BRUCE also thanked the members of our Strategic Leadership Team, Tactical Leadership Team and the many volunteers it takes to put on the car show every year. BRUCE reviewed the key things to know about volunteering (see the handout – too numerous to list here!) and urged everyone to show up 15 minutes early and stay to say thank you to the car show participants as they exit the field. Thanks for all your efforts, BRUCE!

BRUCE signed a book for our MWFB's library: “A Busy Creature’s Day Eating”

President CHUCK closed the meeting with a quote from the host of “Top Gear” Jeremy Clarkson:  “It’s what non-car people don’t get. They see all cars as just a ton and a half, two tons of wires, glass, metal, and rubber, and that’s all they see. People like you or I know we have an unshakable belief that cars are living entities.”
