President CHUCK opened the meeting, and MARCY EULER gave the inspiration (“A Cowboy’s Prayer” in honor of the Rodeo). GARY HIRSCH and PAUL HOOKER led us in the Pledge and Song (“My Country ‘Tis of Thee”). SARA GAAR EHRENS introduced our guests and Visiting Rotarians.
We had two birthday Rotarians: TIM PUNTENNEY was the 1969 Outstanding Male Student at the University of Arizona, and in honor of his birthday he recited a poem about cowboys who lassoed the devil – entirely from memory! DON CLARK made most of his high school spending money playing snooker in a pool hall. He thanked his sponsor TOM STRASBURG.
Sergeant at Arms BOBBY LARSON recognized Past President JONI CONDIT for being named the new CEO of La Posada, the best Continuing Care Retirement Center in the Southwest. JONI donated to the Community and Scholarship Endowments to mark the event. We had the following announcements:

LUCY HOWELL reported that the Roteract / Interact Clubs are touring the Arizona Bowl to learn about science-based jobs, and she offered a Happy Jackson to remind us all to come to the UA Women’s Basketball game on 3/3.
Past President JON WANG recounted the early years of our Club which was founded in 1921, including a spirited competition with the Kiwanis Club over which was the “old man’s club”.

RRELL STEWART introduced Dr. David Lapin who introduced our speaker Lucy Kin. Dr. Lapin’s family foundation helps over 1,500 kids from low income areas with a goal of making them competitive enough to 
succeed in college. The Lapin College Club was started by Dr. Lapin’s mother Patricia in 1983 and is currently housed in the former Wakefield Middle School. Ms. Kin is the Executive Director, and she oversees a wide range of programs all aimed at helping disadvantaged middle school children succeed. By the end of their high school careers, participants can earn up to $5,000 for grades and GPA achievements, another $6,000 for mentoring younger students, as well as Pell grants and scholarships. Participants are encouraged to explore careers, develop leadership skills, and improve essay writing by doing a Portfolio project. The Club also sponsors a soccer scholar league, a greenhouse, robotics club, theatre group, and therapy dogs. Over the history of the Club’s existence, there have been students who earned 6 master’s degrees, 56 BA degrees, 44 associate’s degrees, 67 trade certifications, and 14 students who have studied abroad. Two of the participants have received $500,000 Gates Foundation awards. Ms. Kin signed a book for our lending library: “Words and Your Heart”.
