The meeting started with Thanksgiving themed buffet complete with mini pumpkin and pecan pieces. PRESIDENT MARGARET called the meeting to order and new member PAM ALEXANDER was excited and surprised to lead the pledge and song “Star Spangled Banner.”
PRESIDENT MARGARET noted JOE DeCHATELET underwent knee surgery and unfortunately developed blood clots in her lungs. The good news is that she is on the road to recovery. Get Well cards were passed around for JO.
JOE DANISZEWSKI offered an inspiration that was themed around peace. We have Peace Poles at Make Way for Books and also at the entrance of Reid Park Zoo. Let JOE know if you have an idea of where another Peace Pole may go. We finished the inspiration by singing “All we are saying is, give Peace a chance…”
DAN KALM introduced our guests and highlighted that our Wine Fellowship members were our greeters today. Thanks all!
BRUCE JACOBS introduced the slate of candidates for the 2024-2026 Board. He asked us to vote for three people and our ballots were taken and counted. More on that later.
PAT ZUMBUSCH introduced our speaker, Kray Luxbacher, Department Head of Mining and Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona. Kray started by telling of her first experience with Rotary that was in 1997. She was an exchange student and spent a year in Australia. Then, she asked how many minerals are in the human body. 15 is the answer. She talked about the importance of mining and “Critical Minerals.” A Critical Mineral is any non-fuel mineral, element, substance or material the Secretary of Energy determines: has a high risk of supply chain disruption and serves an essential function in one or more energy technologies. With fragile supply chains and much of the processing of mined ore being processed in other countries, including China, she made a case that we must onshore, friendshore and allyshore the permitting, technology, mining and processing of minerals. Arizona supplies 71% of the copper in the USA. It’s predicted to have an increase in utilization by 300% by 2030. Arizona leads the way in mining technology and can be thought of as the Silicon Valley of Mining. She was given the book “Rocks & Gems – Big, Tiny, Rough & Shiny” to sign and be placed in the Make Way for Books Library.
WOCKY REDSAR was celebrating her birthday and did you know that she was formerly a water skiing champion in Indonesia? BRUCE TUNZE was celebrating his birthday and turns out that he became an Eagle Scout with a little help from his Dad who was the Assistant Scout Master.
DENISE WATTERS introduced our newest member, PAM ALEXANDER. Pam has a deep involvement in the community and recently led the charge to give away 3,000 bikes to youth in need during El Tour de Tucson. She also is the owner of the athletic training center, Pace Ranch.
JEN HOFFMAN led a Paul Harris Presentation to ANN LANCERO who received her Paul Harris Plus 4 award. Congrats ANN!DAN KALM held a 50/50 Raffle and our birthday girl, WOCKY won! Good news, the King of Clubs is still available. There’s over $1,700 up for grabs.

- We’ll have a dark day on December 12th due to 2nd week of the month. The entire December schedule is in the bulletin.
- DIANA MADARAS announced the winner of the Service Projects competition for October. It was CHUCK SAWYER. Thanks for all of your efforts CHUCK!
- Our Holiday Mixer will be at Brother John’s on December 21st at 6pm.
- LISA FOGLE announced the Handbags of Hope campaign where you may donate gently used handbags and toiletries. Ask LISA or AIMEE GRAVES for details.
- JEANNE ZETAH had a Happy Jackson and announced the birth of her Grandson who was born on October 12th.
- MARK IRVIN had a Happy Jackson and mentioned that we can be part of the record breaking of season ticket holders for the UArizona Women’s Basketball Team. Tickets are inexpensive and it’s a lot of fun! Also, enjoy the ice skating rink set up in front of the TCC.
