2017 Car Show Results
Jim Murphy, a twenty year Member of the Rotary Club of Tucson and Chair of the 11th Annual Tucson Classics Car Show, will report on the Goals for the Show, thank those who made it a success and be involved in distributing the net proceeds of the Show to the five nonprofit beneficiaries.

Jim served as President of the Club in 2004-05 and has volunteered in every area of service during his tenure. He is a Paul Harris Fellow + 5, chaired the District RYLA event in 2000, the District Centennial GALA in 2005 and was the chair and then the President of the Board of Reading Seed, Inc. until it merged with four other literacy programs and became Literacy Connects. He has been honored with the Orville S. McPherson Award and in the community with the 2015 Founders Award given by Greater Tucson Leadership & the Tucson Metro Chamber; the Professional Excellence Award, University of Arizona Chapter Phi Alpha Alpha National Honorary for Public Affairs and Administration; the “Jim Murphy Annual Volunteer Service Award”, created by Reading Seed Board of Directors, Inc. and an Honorary Life Member of the Tu Nidito Children & Family Services Board of Directors and the American Cancer Society.

Prior to a couple of retirements, Jim was employed at Mountain Bell Telephone & Telegraph, part owner in a cocktail lounge, a Folk Club and a food distribution business, elected to the city council, twice to the Pima County Board of Supervisors, served 22 years as a Public Administrator and 15 years with Pima Council on Aging, serving as CEO when he retired.
Mystery Editor - 1/3/18
PAT LENNAN gave the inspiration and urged everyone to enjoy some beautiful part of life each day. JOHN STROBECK led us in the pledge and song accompanied by Past President ELLIE PATTERSON.  SHARON LUDWIG introduced our visitors and guests. Shockingly, we had no Birthday Rotarians!

ART ALLIS introduced our newest member, TIM HEIM who works in Hotel Management for the Radisson Company and Prism Hotels & Resorts. TIM has a long list of past volunteer pursuits from when he lived in Mississippi and looks forward to participating in more of the same with the RCOT.

SERGEANT AT ARMS DALE BERG fined Past President MARY MARTIN for reasons that were unclear but involved an article her husband included her in and possibly child labor law violations.  DALE then skillfully oversaw an auction for beautiful glass work from the Sonoran Glass Project and our weekly raffle.

We had several announcements including:
  • President CLIFF reminded us about Roadrunner Hockey and $2 beer on 1/5/18.
  • ALLYN BULZOMI treated us to a video about the exciting year for UA Rotaract.
  • DOT KRET gave us a Happy Jackson about her new venture in Pak Mail further expanding the training she offers for disabled persons.
  • … and Past President ROGER HARWELL introduced our 17 Rotary Scholarship recipients, all pursuing amazing studies in a wide variety of fields. Wonderful students, ambitious goals!
For our program, DAVID PASHKOW introduced Lynn Davis the Executive Director of the Sonoran Glass Project. Lynn talked about the origins of the studio in a small building on 18th street. Now the Sonoran Glass Project offers daily, weekly, and semester long projects in glass art for students in Tucson schools as well as interested adults. She showed a great video where glassblowers trained students in glassblowing, torch work, and kiln fusing. Truly one of Tucson’s best kept secrets.

Lynn signed a book for the Make Way For Books Library: “Sloth Slept On”.

President CLIFF closed with several New Year’s quotes reminding us that 2018 is another chance to get it right!  Happy New Year everyone!

New Member Spotlight ~ Michael Deehan
Michael Deehan is originally from Detroit, Michigan and graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Communications.  Michael has been in the hospitality business for the last thirteen years with Marriott International in both management and human resources positions and is currently the Director of Human Resources at JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa.  Michael just recently moved to Tucson after living 21 years in Seattle where he was also a Director for Human Resources with Marriott.

Before moving to Tucson, Michael was a 3-year member and the Treasurer of the Redmond Rotary Club in Redmond, WA.  The Redmond Rotary Club stated Michael was a great club member, bringing the right attitude and offering his time and energy generously.  Michael visited our club at one of our monthly social mixers at the Trident II and knew he had found a new Rotary home.  Michael is former Rotary Youth Exchange Student.  He spent his senior year of high school in Copenhagen, Denmark.  In October, Michael returned to visit his Danish host-parents, who were celebrating 50 years of marriage.

Michael is a member of the Society of Human Resources Management and the Marriott International Tucson Business Council.  Being in the hospitality business, it is no surprise that Michael enjoys travel and food.  Michael has traveled to over 30 countries.  He spent his 21st & 23rd birthdays aboard the Trans-Siberian Railway.  At 20 years of age, he drove a 20 year old Volvo alone from Michigan to Alaska.  Being new to Tucson but familiar with Rotary, Michael is looking forward to getting more involved with our club and meeting all of our members.
Rotary Leadership Institute - 1/20/18
Rotary Leadership Institute
Registration is now open for the January 20, 2018 classes.  Once again District 5500 has assembled an outstanding faculty from our District Leadership. The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a multi-district, grassroots leadership development program of member districts organized into regional divisions throughout the world. It was recommended by the R.I. Board of Directors and strongly endorsed by the Council on Legislation at three of their triennial meetings. RLI conducts a series of quality leadership development courses for potential club officers and all other club members, including those who have recently joined a Rotary Club. The courses emphasize both leadership skills and knowledge of Rotary around the world. All course sessions are completely interactive. RLI believes that leadership education has a positive impact on membership retention by creating enthusiasm and furthering engagement for Rotary. Levels 1, 2 and 3 will be offered.

Tucson Roadrunners WIN!!!
The first-place Roadrunners won their fourth straight game Friday night beating the Ontario Reign while 48 Rotarians and friends cheered them on to victory with a final 4-3 score! What an exciting night for us all as we wore our new Roadrunner ball caps which were included with the ticket as part of the Rotary group promotion. Many members enjoyed 2 dollar beers, nachos and popcorn, visiting with each other while munching and drinking to the tunes of the hockey music playlist. It was a night of friendship, fellowship and fun in the beautifully remodeled Tucson Convention Center.
