David McCumber will discuss the Star and its role in Tucson and Southern Arizona now and over the years. He will also touch on the future of newspapers and journalism.
David McCumber is Executive Editor of the Arizona Daily Star.
His journalism career spans 56 years. A Nebraska native, he started work at age 16 at the Scottsbluff (Nebraska) Star-Herald. He has held reporting and editing positions at a dozen daily newspapers, including leading newsrooms at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the Santa Barbara News-Press, Hearst Connecticut Newspapers, the Montana Standard and Lee Montana newspapers, and the Star. He has also served as Hearst Newspapers’ Washington bureau chief, Rocky Mountain regional editor, and West Regional News Director for Lee Enterprises. In that position he supervised the newsrooms of 27 newspapers across 13 states.
McCumber first came to the Arizona Daily Star in 1978. He helped to direct a series of stories on problems with the University of Arizona football program that won a Pulitzer Prize in 1980, and in 1984 was himself a finalist for the Pulitzer as part of a team that revealed issues at the Hughes Aircraft defense plant.
Also, under his supervision the Star produced a major expose of the Arizona prison system; award-winning coverage of the 1983 floods; and a series of stories revealing serious health problems caused by trichloroethylene contamination of groundwater at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.
He is the author of three books of nonfiction: The Cowboy Way: Seasons of a Montana Ranch (Avon); Playing off the Rail: A Pool Hustler’s Journey (Random House); and X-Rated: The Mitchell Brothers (Simon & Schuster), which was made into a Showtime movie starring Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez. He is the co-author, with the late Andrew Schneider, of another book of nonfiction: An Air that Kills: How the Asbestos Poisoning of a Montana Town Revealed a National Scandal (Putnam).
He lives in the Picture Rocks area with his wife, artist Sarah Greene.
PRESIDENT KURTIS started off his first meeting as the RCOT President armed with a THOR sized gavel; introducing new member LISA STANTON who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and reciting the 4-Way Test.

PAST PRESIDENT BRUCE JACOBS introduced today’s program featuring “hard-wired introvert” PRESIDENT KURTIS DAWSON who had some theme music issues. Apparently, he can’t channel Darth Vader, but he is able to do it his way…. With a crowd of Kurtis lookalikes, he kicked off his Rotary year. Comedian I mean PRESIDENT KURT(IS), spoke of his love for his Rotarian family. He then began prioritizing his goals for the year including bribing members with Sasha’s famous chocolate chip cookies. Wilbur the Wildcat joined KURTIS and Sasha at the International Conference and took lots of selfies. PRESIDENT KURTIS’ GOALS include: Grow club membership, increase member engagement and participation, FUN, increase giving more time, more talent, more treasure, second Wednesday organize get togethers out in the community, Red Badge selfies- make new members feel welcome, be respectful of TIME and get ready to be fined (especially you MITCH PISIK)!! Aspiring chef (PRESIDENT KURTIS) is going to host Rotarians at his home, or yours with a fancy dinner, going to the highest bidder. Congratulations to CLIFF BOWMAN!

Kaoru Amano, our new Rotary Youth Exchange student from Okazaki, Japan, arrived on Saturday night and was greeted by his host family and several Rotarians. He's 18 years old, will be attending Sabino High School, loves all kinds of sports, and hopes to learn more about our culture and way of life. You'll get a chance to meet and hear from him on Wednesday, along with Amity Claggett, our outbound student who will be hosted by the same district in Japan. We hope you'll find time to involve him in an activity that you think is special to our area.

The Rotary Club of Tucson will be volunteering at the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona on Saturday, July 27th located at 3003 S. Country Club Rd. in Tucson from 9 am-12 pm. We will be boxing food for 100’s if not 1000’s of people less fortunate than us and having a great time together while doing it. Our efforts in our first two volunteer opportunities have helped provide over 140,000 lbs. of boxed food for the elderly and families in and around Pima County. We are looking for 30 to 50 people 16 years of age on up to help, and for those that would like we will meet afterwards for lunch and fun fellowship! Please print your name on the sheet on your table with your email or contact Bobby Larson at 520-730-5271. It is an indoor/outdoor venue. Guest fee is $35 and will be billed to your account. As with all replacement mixers, this is a no host bar. We have an opportunity to assist Sister Jose Women's Shelter. a 2024 Car Show beneficiary, this year. Sister Jose is dedicated to assisting women experiencing homelessness in a welcoming safe space. Their day center provides unaccompanied women who are unhoused with a stable and safe environment to recuperate from the daily struggle of homelessness and extreme poverty. We'll be doing two donation drives with items their women will need on August 21 and October 2. There will also be two service projects September 21 and October 5. September 21 encompasses weed restoration (picking) and October 5 will be some fence painting. Please take a look at the flyers on your table for the list of items needed for the donation drive. Contact Wally or Jim with questions.
We are looking for a couple members to join the A/V Committee. If you are interested in working the A/V or Switcher Studio once a month at our weekly meetings, please contact Dan Kalm.
