We will be holding our next "Events Around Town on Wednesday, 12/11/24. Remember, this is the second week of the month, therefore there is no scheduled club lunch meeting. These events are hosted by members at restaurants scattered around Tucson. If you are interested in hosting an event, please let President Kurtis or the Rotary office know. We will need the location and how many you will be hosting. Please sign up on the website under "Upcoming Events". You are responsible for your meal. Thank you! We have four events set so far. PRESIDENT KURTIS rang the bell to start off our meeting and quickly recognized JIM WOOD and the Scum I mean Sundevils win, no gloating allowed. He then invited new member CAROL SAYLER up to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance and “God Bless America” accompanied by KHRIS DODGE on the piano.
Cards were circulated for member FRANK DAHL for a speedy recovery from the heart attack he suffered. And the club shared a moment of silence for the tragic passing of DOT KRET’S son and DAVID LEX’s brother, Nathan Lex. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers.
Today our inspiration was from MITCH PISIK, "Believe in the Miraculous”.

ASSISTANT DISTRICT GOVERNOR ANN HUBER introduced today’s program featuring DISTRICT GOVERNOR SUE ARCHIBALD. SUE talked about changes to Rotary International; yearly themes will now last for five years instead of one; it’s about the marketing and growing ROTARY. They are also changing goal setting and award submissions for the clubs. In our zone, ZONE 26, is focusing on growing membership. In our district we are focusing on Google Marketing. In the District: shout out to JEANNE ZETAH for the new Interact club at JTED!! The ROTARACT club at the UA is very active! There was a Mexican American grant exchange in Mexico where our project in Senegal was recognized; we are still working to get the grant fully funded. We have an exchange annually and next year it will be in Yuma over Halloween. The district is working really hard on upcoming leadership training.
Next October there will be the annual cleft palette project in Hermosillo; participate if you can. It is a life-changing experience. DG SUE then asked members of RCOT when they became Rotarians. It is always special to hear when the transition from member to ROTARIAN happens.
We celebrated four birthdays today; ERNIE MONTAGNE (12/3), ERIC LAMB (12/5) , BOBBY LARSON (12/6), and GARY SCHEER (12/25). HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

CHUCK SAWYER had us vote if we should continue with The Tucson Classics Car Show being our major fundraiser and service projects for 2026-2028. Results will be announced at a later date.

It's all about building connections and strengthening our impact in the community. We encourage you to bring your prospective members to a club meeting. They won’t be disappointed.
Saturday, December 7th, Club members gathered bright and early (and chilly) to work on the portion of Oracle Road which has been assigned to the Club. Members doing the important community service included Brian Crawford, Ken Light, Nancy Bevins, Eric Lamb, Roger Harwell, Hugh Thompson, Dan Kalm, Don Riegger, Jonathan Walkup, Alan Rogers, Bobby Larson and Lee Olitzky. Thank you to all who spent more than 2 hours ensuring the area was clean and beautiful. Our next project day is Saturday, January 11th, 2025! We would welcome additional members to help with this effort as with the holidays, there is actually more roadside debris.
Martha and I were joined for the final hike of 2024 by fellow Rotarian Peter Beahan and girlfriend, Scarlett. It was a beautiful morning in the Tucson Mountains for this quick trek on the Brown Mountain Loop trail. As we close 2024 and move towards another holiday season, here is to wishing all of you the very best for a Happy Holidays!
See you on the trails in 2025 with the first hike on January 11th for Phoneline Loop Trail.

The Rotary Club of Tucson will be volunteering at the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona on Saturday, January 18th located at 3003 S. Country Club Rd. in Tucson from 9 am-12 pm. We will be boxing food for 100’s if not 1000’s of people less fortunate than us and having a great time together while doing it. Our efforts in our previous volunteer opportunities have helped provide over 140,000 lbs. of boxed food for the elderly and families in and around Pima County. We are looking for 40 people 16 years of age on up to help. Please contact Bobby Larson at 520-730-5271 to register. Thanks gang, and I promise you will leave feeling better than when you arrived! ~~Bobby Larson P.S. Wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be standing a lot but there are a couple of 15 minute breaks.
In the past 3 months, circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2) was detected in sewage samples in Barcelona, Spain; Warsaw, Poland; and Cologne, Bonn, Hamburg and Munich, Germany. The detected virus is genetically linked to a strain that emerged in Nigeria. This strain is circulating in several countries outside the Region, most widely in North and West Africa.
In all 3 countries in the European Region, the virus was isolated from environmental (sewage) samples only – no associated paralytic cases of polio have been detected.
“WHO continues to support national and local public health authorities in their investigations and monitoring of the situation, including identification of any potential subnational immunity gaps that may need to be addressed,” added Robb Butler. “Vaccination of every vulnerable child is essential to ensure that the virus cannot lead to lifelong paralysis or even death.”
Germany, Poland and Spain maintain strong disease surveillance and high levels of routine immunization coverage, estimated at 85–93% nationally with 3 doses of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), which provides excellent protection from paralysis caused by poliovirus.
