The Importance of Early Reading for Children's Brain Development
Jenny will speak about the importance of early reading experiences to set children up for success in learning. She will discuss the science of brain development and how the early childhood years are connected to a child’s future academic outcomes and success.  Jenny will draw on recent research to illuminate the educational landscape and highlight how effective language and literacy experiences and interventions in the early years help to build the architecture of a child’s brain and can ultimately work to help close the achievement/opportunity gap.

Jenny Volpe ~ Biography

Jenny Volpe is CEO of Make Way for Books, an early childhood literacy nonprofit organization that impacts 30,000 children, parents, and educators annually. Jenny is passionate about helping children gain access to quality educational opportunities and believes in the power of literacy to change lives. For the past eight years at Make Way for Books, she has dedicated her time working to ensure that children in our community have the chance to realize their full potential. Jenny holds a B.A. in literature from the University of Chicago and a M.A. in education from the Johns Hopkins University. Believing in education as a means to achieve social change and equity, Jenny began her educational career as a Teach For America teacher and taught for five years before entering the curriculum development and nonprofit sectors. She has traveled the globe and helped to design literacy programs for children across the United States and in other countries.  Jenny is proud to lead Make Way for Books, an organization that has won awards for innovation and impact. She has worked to ensure that Make Way for Books takes the latest science of improving children’s literacy and closing opportunity gaps, and that of adult learning, and turns it into effective action to make lifelong teachers of parents and lifelong learners of children!
Mystery Editor ~ 3/14/18
PAT ZUMBUSCH gave the inspiration including quotes from Satchel Paige among others, and GARY HIRSCH and PAT DAVITT combined for the Pledge and song – another strong rendition of “God Bless America”.

We had three Birthday Rotarians, all Past Presidents: JON WANG, LARRY ADAMSON, and ELLIE PATTERSON. JON noted that he is 77 years old, married for 42 years, and a Rotarian for 35 years, and that the more he is involved with service, the more he appreciates Rotary and everyone in this Club. LARRY is a 47 year Rotarian, and he is grateful for having both a father and a brother who are Rotarians. District Governor Elect ELLIE appreciates how Rotary teaches us to care for each other and for our community. Visiting Rotarian John Marnell exchanged flags with PRESIDENT CLIFF from the Hudson Day Break Rotary Club in Wisconsin.

Past President SCOTT VAUGHAN again did a yeoman’s job introducing our many visitors and invited everyone to consider joining our great Rotary Club.

Sergeant at Arms DALE BERG expertly conducted our raffle and organized the following announcements:

  • President CLIFF reviewed the March Madness results so far, including a tie settled by coin flip that went to LEE OLITZKY’s Dream Team.
  • DALE pinch-hitting for MIKE ORCUTT reminded us of the upcoming work projects: Community Food Bank March 24 and Triangle Y Ranch Project April 6-7.
  • JOHN LEWIS reviewed the folks currently signed up to host Home Hospitality during the first week of April, and asked for additional hosts.
  • …and finally, DALE reminded those of us who still owe taxes to consider the TRVFA Tax Credit

For our program Past President JONI CONDIT introduced Dr. Paul E. Bendheim, Founder, Chairman & Chief Medical Officer of BrainSavers, LLC. Dr. Bendheim’s topic was “BrainSavers, Because Gray Matters”. He pointed out that memory is what makes our lives, and that unfortunately 30 – 50% of people over age 80 are at risk for Alzheimer’s disease. The good news is that the brain is remarkable in its ability to generate new cells throughout our lives. Encouraging plasticity, building brain reserve, focusing on a vegetable and grain rich Mediterranean diet, getting better sleep, reducing chronic major stress, and cognitive and physical exercise can all help slow and reduce brain decline. A fascinating and encouraging presentation! Dr. Bendheim signed a book for our lending library: “Is That Wise Pig?”

President CLIFF welcomed our visitors to consider joining our excellent Rotary Club and finished with an Irish toast in honor of St. Patrick’s Day.
March Madness ~ Final Four
We may be bummed about our Cats, but I am so excited for our Membership March Madness Final Four!!  Remember, there are NO LOSERS.  The teams are merging together to become larger teams striving for the same goal to bring new members to our club.  I cannot believe the number of guests we have had the last three weeks, and the energy at the meetings has been fantastic.  The even better news, it is working!  We already have SEVEN new applications!  We have a few more weeks to keep the momentum going.  Keep bringing in those guests and make sure to follow-up with guests that you have already brought. Thank you for your support.  As Bob Shaff always says, you are indeed a REMARKABLE club!

President Cliff

Home Hospitality Hosts Needed

Our Home Hospitality events are scheduled for the week of April 16th through the 22nd and we are looking for members to host during the week.  These social events will replace our Wednesday, April 18th lunch meeting.   If you are interested in hosting a small or large group at your home, place of business or even at a restaurant, please let John Lewis know the date, time, location and the amount of guests you will host.  The Club will provide each host $20 per member/guest that attend your event.  So let's have some fun during this Home Hospitality Week!

4th Annual Rotary Days Service Project ~ 4/7/18
Fourth Annual Rotary Days Service Project Triangle Y YMCA Ranch
APRIL 7 2018 ~ 8:30-4:00

Our fourth annual day of service at the Ranch is open to all Rotarians and friends and families of Rotarians. Please bring your friends and neighbors.  The Ranch has been providing a one week camp experience to under privileged children from Tucson and southern Arizona since 1948 and they need our help.  Please bring the following: sunscreen, hat, landscaping tools of your choice, protective goggles if you have them, weed eater if you have one, and a ladder.  Please put your name on any tools you bring to the ranch.  The maintenance supervisor will have plenty of tools but it always helps to bring some things.

Lunch is included for no charge and will be served at 1:00 PM.  You will have a great opportunity to see all of the ranch facilities.  This is a great opportunity to introduce prospective members to what Rotary is all about.

There is a “Cowboy Night” aka sleepover on Friday night at the ranch.  Modern lodging is available and includes breakfast on Saturday for $35 PP.  We will also have our usual steak and beans dinner for $10 PP.  Thanks again to Chef Darrell Stewart who has helped provide a great dinner the past several years.  You can register on Clubrunner  at the Rotary Club of Tucson website or email Dave Gallaher at dave@tucsonindustrialrealty.com or call 520-907-4983.  There will be carpooling available leaving from the parking lot of Trader Joes at the southeast corner of Oracle and Magee.  Please plan to meet there at 7:30.  It takes about 50 minutes to reach the Ranch from the lot.
