I can’t believe it has been three months since our 18th Annual Tucson Classics Car Show. I don’t think you need me to remind you, but WOW, what a day! The weather was absolutely perfect, we had a beautiful field full of fantastic cars. The crowds were coming in to check out the cars, eat some food and maybe partake in a beer.
Our club came together and the show went off seamlessly, it truly is a well-oiled machine. Sean and I are so thankful for the hours of work our members put in and the money the Sponsors donated to make sure the show was a HUGE success, and it was!
I look forward to sharing the exciting news of how much money we raised to give away to our beneficiaries. I will see you next week and again thank you all so much for your efforts and support. We truly have the Best Rotary Club in the World.
PRESIDENT KURTIS rang the bell to start off our meeting. He then invited new member DAN ASIA to lead us in the Pledge and Song “The Star Spangled Banner” accompanied by KHRIS DODGE on the piano.
We had a Moment of Silence to honor Past Member and Past President Gary Gethmann who passed away. There is no info on services at this time. Today our Inspiration was from Dan KALM; he reminded us that it is easy to be an inspiration to someone.
SAA KHRIS DODGE introduced us to our many guests.
JONATHON ROTHSCHILD introduced today’s program featuring Honorary member and Pima County Administrator JAN LESHER who shared a “Pima County Update”. She started off with good news; They have been making progress on fixing roads and infrastructure. Since the last time she spoke to us two years ago, 915 miles of road have been improved, it is a work in progress. The county’s fiscal well-being is good and has maintained their bond rating. Monthly budget financial reports are available to the community. She shared two highlights for the year, The Mosaic Quarter and the American Battery Factory. Both will deliver great economic impact to the county. Challenges we are facing this next year; the re-upping of the Regional Transportation Authority, the county relies heavily on bonded issues but has not had much luck in getting the bonds passed for critical infrastructure issues. There are concerns with homelessness and the criminal element associated with that, and finally there has been an influx of legally processed asylum seekers which will be supported as long as we continue to receive funding. With Jan at the helm we will be able to face these challenges head on. Thank you for all you do and for your report.
We celebrated STU GOLDMAN’s birthday (1/15). That STU, he is a funny guy. He is also pretty thankful to be a member of the Best Rotary Club in the world!

RCOT’s Totes of Inspiration service project for women at The Haven was a resounding success! Thanks to your generosity, our Club collected boxes filled with journals, pens, highlighters, and folders. On November 14, 2024, we assembled nearly 100 starter kits to welcome new members when they first arrive at The Haven’s residential treatment program—and had a great time together while doing it! Our previous Handbags of Hope project brought holiday cheer to more than 50 Haven women. Project lead Lisa Fogle, along with Vic Jacobs, prepared a delicious brunch for our group. After assembling the kits, we toured the residential facility.
Many women arrive at The Haven with minimal personal belongings. These starter kits help them stay organized and provide comfort as they begin their recovery journey. Dr. Hugh Thompon described RCOT project’s contributions, “On an expansive property, The Haven provides support, counseling, and resources for women to rediscover their own value, succeed in the workplace, and give back to society.”
The Haven board and staff send their heartfelt thank-you to all Rotarians who donated items and participated in the assembly process. Your kindness and support make a real difference!
On Saturday, January 11, 2025, braving the chilly temperatures, our hearty RCOT trash team hit the street. Numerous bags of trash were collected and placed for the City to collect. This completes our sixth clean up of Oracle between River and Wetmore. Thank you to those who pitched in or more accurately, pitched the trash into bags. The RCOT sub freezing team included Joe D., Nancy B., Jonathan W., Bobby L., Dan K., Randy S., Don R., Alan R. and Lee O.
We could use a few more sets of hands…Please join us for the next clean up. Mark your calendar for NEW TIME - Saturday, MARCH 15th at 8:30 AM.
We had a very successful work day at the Community Food Bank. We ended up with 53 people signed up under The Rotary Club of Tucson. We had quite a mix of people with our Elder Statesman Jim Murphy leading the pack and a couple of students from Edge H.S. coming in at 16 years of age. Overall, we had Rotarians, their families, or friends totaling 43 and another eight students from Edge H.S. plus two of their chaperones. These extra set of fantastic Edge H.S. hands were set-up by Jeanne Zetah and Nancy Stockton. Also, part of the 43 were three U of A students from their very successful Pickleball Club Team…Thanks to Bill Tong and his son Brandon (the original founder of the Club) for arranging these extra excellent workers and hands.
The reason we do this work project is to help our Southern Arizona Neighbors in need. So on that note here is the total amounts of food packed:
Small Box Assembly line: 1897 boxes totaling 17,073 lbs.
Large Box Assembly line: 1510 boxes totaling 43,679 lbs. Totaling over 60,500 lbs. of food that gets distributed to five Southern Arizona counties
A Big Thanks to everyone who worked so hard in an effort to help out. Everyone had a great time, and I was extremely proud to see how we all stepped up and enjoyed the Fellowship that was had by all!
Our club sponsored five high school students to attend RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) camp this past weekend. Pictured from left to right are Chase Pickering, Kaoru Amano, Julie Becker, Isabella Hamamoto, and Carina Vasquez. The group included a Rotarian's grandson, our Rotary Youth Exchange student, an Edge High School student, and two students from Pima JTED Interact club. Nancy Stockton, our club's RYLA coordinator, also attended as an adult advisor at the camp. Our club will get to hear from these young Rotary leaders at a future meeting about which of the leadership, team-building, challenge, and social activities impacted them the most.
Two new Wild Polio paralysis cases reported last week.We are now 3 weeks since the most recent report of a child being paralyzed by the Wild Polio Virus in Pakistan.
Surveillance - Polio surveillance underpins the entire polio eradication initiative. Without surveillance, it would be impossible to pinpoint where and how poliovirus is still circulating. Polio surveillance identifies new cases and detects any circulation of poliovirus.
Europe - Recent detections of poliovirus in wastewater systems across five countries in the WHO European Region underscore the critical importance of maintaining high vaccination rates and robust surveillance. While no cases of paralysis have been reported, the presence of the virus in places long polio-free including Finland, Germany, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing risk polio poses to children everywhere, as long as it exists anywhere. Continued vigilance and strengthened immunization efforts are needed to ensure any further transmission is put to a stop.
