Stories
Tucson Speedway
John Lashley, the President of Tucson Speedway will talk about the flips and the flops through the years of the Tucson Speedway, and where he thinks they are today in Season 5 - 2018.

Biography ~ John Lashley is a graduate of the University of Washington with a B.A. in finance – which he never used.  He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1967 to avoid the Vietnam draft, which was unsuccessful.  He served in the Coast Guard until 1976 when he began selling and leasing commercial real estate in Seattle-Bellevue, WA.  John moved to Tucson in 1998 and failed from retirement.  He leased the defunct racetrack from Pima County in 2012.  John rebranded the track with NASCAR and commenced stock car racing.  His interests include racing something – motorcycles, kayaks, marathons, cars and sailboats.

Our July 18, 2018 meeting was exciting and well attended as our guest speaker was Jonathan Rothschild, Mayor of Tucson and Honorary member of our Club.  The business portion of our meeting was delayed as we had a delicious summer buffet of chicken and hamburgers, scrumptious potato salad, beans, fruit and crisp fresh vegetables.  The wait staff at the Doubletree was wonderful.

Seated at the head table were CHUCK SAWYER, our new president, Mayor JONATHAN ROTHSCHILD, BOB LOGAN. Celebrating their birthdays were DIANA CANNON, JIM RONSTADT, TOM WILLIS, JULIE PAULSON and BRUCE JACOBS.  ALAN ROGERS’ birthday was also today but not sitting at the front.

A few cards were sent around for RICHARD ROWLEY who turned 90 on July 5th.  Happy Birthday, RICHARD!

The Inspiration was by HUGH THOMPSON who gave a lovely lecture with the basic thought being “Get Involved in Rotary or other organizations or activities to make this world a better place!”

JIM RONSTADT led the Pledge and wonderful song: “You’re a Grand Old Flag”.  It was great to hear the members and many guests singing. BRUCE ELLWEIN introduced the guests and visiting Rotarians.

A new member, MIKE DALTON was introduced by his sponsor, TED FORSBERG.  MIKE is in Real Estate: Title Insurance.  Welcome to the Club, MIKE!

At my table we had Herb from Columbus Ohio who was visiting Davis Monthan.  Also Marcy, a prospective member from  Pima Community College Foundation.

Sargeant at Arms, BOBBY LARSON, gave recognition to MARK IRVIN and MARSHALL DENNINGTON who were recognized for  their work as Honorary Wing Commanders at Davis Monthan Air Base.
PRESIDENT CHUCK shared a celebration in Toronto for JIM and Connie Murphy’s 50th wedding anniversary.  Wow, congrats to you both!

FONDA INSLEY had taken over for the Replacement Member Mixers and the next one is Aug 8th at Topgolf.  You don’t need clubs and you don’t need to know how to play.  There are great coolers and misters there and they have elevators!  The food is delicious and they also play great music.  Those that don’t want to swing a club can sit and watch.  The views are great and there is convenient parking. Come on and sign up on the home page of the website.  Guest fee is $30.

STACIA DECKER reminded and encouraged everyone to start thinking about the Car Show Auction and how the committee is collecting items now.  She encouraged people to think about new donations, particularly events, ie. Hotel Stays, Golf packages, Vacations…etc….Actual Items need to be new, not re-gifted items or white elephant items this year as the space is limited.

As we were getting ready to have our guest speaker, the microphones started to go off and on. It was finally fixed, but by then the Mayor was ¾ through his speech so those in the back of the room had a hard time hearing everything.   Questions were also “shout outs” and as time was running late, the mayor graciously stayed to answer the questions.

Thanks to all that came to support our Mayor.  It was a wonderful meeting.

Sick and Visitation Now "Member Support"
Our "Sickness & Visitation" Committee has been reorganized, and is now renamed, “MEMBER SUPPORT”.

Co-chairs, Hugh Thompson and Frank Dahl tell us that the new name represents a desire to provide more support and services to our members.  Adding to things like sending cards, calling, and visiting those who are sick, committee members would extend their effort to show support at things like a funeral for a family member, a shoulder to lean on in times of stress, and provide things like rides needed to meetings, the grocery store or doctor, and overall, to be receptive to any and all reasonable request by a member reaching out for support. Many are reluctant to share their difficulties and do not want them announced.  Everything will go through Frank and Hugh and the members’ wishes respected.

It is felt the challenge is with communications, and encouraging members to let Frank or Hugh know if there is a need.  This can be done through the office.  Dorinna and Kari would then let Frank and Hugh know, and they would follow up. With over 200 members, we most likely will always have a few that could use a little help, so, we hope members will feel free to speak up, as we are here for each other.

In that this is a newly reorganized committee, we are asking for input and ideas, so, feel free to contact Hugh, Frank or our office.

We would like to have a list of people geographically spread around the valley that could possible help in special situations.
Weekend Hike
We had a hearty group of hikers on Saturday and beautiful weather for a hike on the mountain.  Jan Green, Gary Olsen and dog Willa, Nancy Bowman along with Martha and Bruce Richardson traversed the Mount Lemmon, Wilderness of Rocks and Marshall Gulch trails.  The hike covered 9.2 miles and just over 1,700 feet in elevation taking.  Although we all will have sore muscles for a few days this week it was a great day on the trails.  More to come on the next planned hike for August 18th but I can assure you it will be shorter!
Replacement/Social Mixer - Topgolf - August 8th
On August 8th we will be holding a Replacement Social Mixer for our Wednesday lunch meeting.  The event will be held at Topgolf, 4050 W. Costco Place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Guest fee will be $30.  Hope you all can come out and join us.  Registration for the event is on our website www.tucsonrotary.org scroll down the left side of the home page to "Upcoming Events" and click on "Replacement/Social Mixer - Topgolf".  Be sure to register your guests!
Hiking ~ Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness 9/21-23, 2018
Come join us September 21-23, 2018 for a hike and fun time at Aravaipa Canyon Wilderness.  There is limited access of just 30 people per day, and the RCOT hiking fellowship currently has a few remaining.  Designated group hike will take place on Saturday, September 22nd and will depart from the Aravaipa Farms Orchard & Inn.  Accommodations  and dining options have been made available by our Rotarian friend Jill Madden, owner of Aravaipa Farms and at a special discount for Rotarians.  Rooms are already booking and the discounted rates will be available until Wednesday, July 25th.  Located just 70 miles northeast of Tucson, please join us for a great weekend of fellowship, hiking, starry skies, and tasty meals.  RSVP to Bruce Richardson as space is limited.
TVHS Marching Band - Earning Funds
The Tanque Verde High School Marching Band posed around the Tucson Classics Car Show's 2018 Corvette on July 20th.  The students of the band and music program appreciate the opportunity to earn funds and to help other organizations by selling the Classics Car Show tickets.
