Bigger Spaces, Smiling Faces at Reid Park Zoo
Thanks to the support of voters in the November 2017 election, the future of your zoo is brighter than ever before! We are excited to share the details of the 10-year master plan that will mean bigger spaces and great experiences that make for smiling faces. Your zoo will be transformed into one of the best in the nation — and even more of a national leader in animal care and conservation.  Reid Park Zoological Society President and CEO Nancy Kluge will give you a sneak peek at the decade ahead!

Biography ~ Nancy Kluge

Nancy Kluge leads Reid Park Zoological Society, where she has served since 2009.  As President and CEO, Nancy guides Reid Park Zoological Society in their mission to support, advocate for and enhance the value of the City-owned Reid Park Zoo for the community.  Her background as a CPA and CFO has helped build a strong financial base to support the Zoo, raising critical funds for the new elephant habitat opened in 2012 and the new Animal Health Center, opened in 2018.

Most of all, Nancy is committed to the Tucson community, STEM education, and saving wild animals and wild places.

She serves as Treasurer on the board for Visit Tucson, is on the Audit and Ethics committee for United Way, and is an active member of the Association for Zoos and Aquariums as well as Nature, Arts, Culture and Heritage Organizations of southern Arizona.  She also enjoys teaching middle school Sunday School at her church.

A University of Arizona graduate who grew up in Tucson, she was honored as a ’60 for 60’ STEM Community Leader by the Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair in 2015, was given an honorary membership in Beta Gamma Sigma by the Eller College at the University of Arizona in 2016, and was honored with a Community Service Award by the League of United Latin American Citizens in 2016.
Mystery Editor ~ 10/10/18
PAT ZAMBUSCH gave the inspiration.  His theme was Flexibility and Adaptability in reference to our last-minute program change.  He had excellent quotes from various luminaries, including President Kennedy and Yogi Berra.  CINDY BARBEE-SUGGS led us in the Pledge and Song, “God Bless America”.  GARY HIRSCH accompanied on piano.  MIKE DALTON introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians.

We had one Birthday Rotarian.  VICKIE JACOBS came to Tucson to attend the U of A, which was selected in part because her aunt lived here.  VICKIE has been a member since 2002 and is originally from Iowa.  She is grateful for her friends in RCOT.

SEAN FURRIER introduced our newest member, SCOTT EHRSAM.  SEAN related that SCOTT is a former Class President at Palo Verde High School and two sport letterman there.  SCOTT has a history with our meeting place, the Doubletree, as he worked there for 7 years as a young man serving a variety of dinners and banquets, including our own RCOT meetings.  He never thought he’d be one of “those” Rotarians.  SCOTT is now with Home Instead Senior Care.  SCOTT also related that he has a sister with polio that has been very successful in life and is one of his heroes.  SCOTT is honored to be a part of an organization with the mission to eradicate the disease worldwide.

BOB LOGAN introduced, with much fanfare and humor, our newest Paul Harris Fellows:  TERESA LIVERZANI-BAKER, SHARLA RONSTADT, BRUCE RICHARDSON, KRISTIN ABEL, and JO DECHATELET.

Sergeant at Arms BOBBY LARSON recognized PAT RASKOB for being the subject of an article in the publication “Friends of the UofA Dept. of Agriculture and Life Sciences.  PAT has helped create a Certified Financial Planner designation program for U of A students to work towards while in school, for both personal financial expertise and future job prospects.

BOBBY also facilitated the following announcements:

  • MATT BLAIR has designed and sold over 7,000 Tour de Tucson shirts and is thanked by the club for his service.
  • President CHUCK displayed a slide of our upcoming October schedule, and pointed out that we have no lunch meetings on 10/24 and 10/31.A make-up mixer on 10/30 in the orange grove behind the Radisson on Speedway will be finalized in the coming days.
  • President CHUCK also announced our leading candidates for the Blue and Gold Ticket Selling teams, CHARLOTTE HARRIS and BILL HARLOW.Both candidates were featured in very compelling political ads, with all the requisite mud-slinging, on the video screen.
  • PAT DAVITT gave an update on the Car Show Silent Auction. Also, PAT noted that only 11 spots are left for the Car Show Dinner.
Our Program featured Daniela Diamente, founder of El Grupo Youth Cycling.  El Grupo’s motto is “Empowering Youth Through Cycling”, and achieves their objectives by providing structure, high expectations, and life skills through their after school and summer camp programs, amongst many other offerings for our community’s young cyclers. Daniela signed a book for our MWFB’s Library:  “Lily and Bear Grumpy Feet”.

President CHUCK closed the meeting with a quote from another luminary of the 20th century, Yoda, as featured on the El Grupo website.  “There is no try.  There is only do, or do not”.
