John Paul “JP” Jones III (Ph.D. Ohio State University) is a Professor of Geography and Development and the Don Bennett Moon Dean of the University of Arizona’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS). SBS is known as the UA’s “People College” in recognition of the over 500 faculty who study human technologies, histories, institutions, ideas, cultures, literatures, and personal and social relationships. SBS is intellectually diverse: among its faculty are poets and philosophers, as well as computer scientists and dendrochronologists.
With over 7,000 students, the College of SBS regularly awards more degrees than any other college at the UA, yet its mission goes beyond education and research. Dr. Jones believes that public, land-grant institutions such as the UA have a responsibility to share their discoveries and expertise with the community through public education and outreach and, since his appointment in 2010, has worked to transform SBS’s relationship with the Tucson community, growing a diverse and impactful portfolio of local engagement.
Before being named dean of SBS, Dr. Jones was director of the College’s School of Geography and Development. He is a prolific researcher, focusing on geographic methodology and the integration of spatial theory and social theory. Before coming to the UA in 2003, he taught at the University of Kentucky and San Diego State University. He was a Fulbright Professor at University College Dublin and has held visiting appointments at the University of Nimegen in the Netherlands, the Universitat de Girona in Spain, and the London School of Economics.
President JEN HOFFMAN called the meeting to order at 12 noon indoor at the beautiful Hacienda Del Sol with 41 Rotarians attending the weekly meeting. The opening of the meeting featured the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag lead by TOM MOULTON, from Southern Arizona Attractions Alliance and the rendition of “America the Beautiful”.
The inspirational moment for the meeting featured a heartwarming video from CBS television regarding a 5-year autistic child attending a skate park for his birthday with his Mom. What followed was unbelievable and wonderful for this 5-year old and his mother. See the video here.
The lunch featured a juicy chicken dish, bone in, with a delicious sauce and some healthy vegetables. As always Hacienda Del Sol banquet staff were attentive to the hungry Rotarians.
President JEN kicked off the formal part of the meeting by thanking all of the virtual audience attending the meeting and introduced two guests, Nicole Lombardo who has submitted her membership application and Bob Blair.
Today’s program featuring Pima County Sheriff, Chris Nanos was introduced by Rotarian VICKIE JACOBS. Sheriff began his career in 1976 in El Paso, Texas and since moving to Pima County, he has served the Sheriff Department for 32 years. Sheriff Nanos is committed to serving the community as your new sheriff elected since January 2021.
Today’s Birthdays featured DON CLARK retired CPA and member since 1984 and KEN LIGHT, retired and member since 1991. DON served with honor on the Pima County Fairgrounds Board (Southwestern Fair Commission) for many years. KEN retired from the Jewish Community Center where he spent most of his career.
