Tommy Lloyd is in his fifth season as the head coach at Arizona after he was named head coach April 14, 2021. In his first four years, he has posted a record of 112-33 (.772), which is the second-most wins by a Division I men's basketball head coach in his first four years.
The Wildcats have won two conference regular season titles and made three appearances in conference tournament games - winning two - with Lloyd leading the way. In the NCAA Tournament, Lloyd and Arizona have advanced to the Sweet 16 in three out of four years.
He has coached two conference players of the year in Bennedict Mathurin (2022) and Caleb Love (2024) and saw five players selected in the NBA Draft (Mathurin, Terry, Koloko, Larsson, Bryant).
After serving as an assistant coach at Gonzaga for 22 seasons prior to his arrival in Tucson, he has instilled a fast, fun and energetic style of play inside the McKale Center. Arizona leads the country in assists per game (18.3) and is third in the nation in scoring (83.9 ppg) since the start of the 2021-22 season.
His head coaching career got off to a record-breaking start, compiling a 61-11 record through his first two years to set a new NCAA record for most wins by a coach in their first two seasons. His 88-20 mark through three seasons is the second-most wins in NCAA history for a coach in his first three seasons.
Lloyd is also the first power conference coach to win his conference tournament in his first two seasons after capturing the 2022 and 2023 Pac-12 Tournament titles in Las Vegas.
AT ARIZONA
The fourth year of the Tommy Lloyd era at Arizona was the first for the Wildcats as a member of the Big 12 Conference. With a 24-13 overall record and a 14-6 mark in conference play, the Wildcats earned a top four seed in the conference tournament and advanced to the title game. In the NCAA Tournament, Lloyd once again guided the team to the Sweet 16 - the third appearance in four seasons. Caleb Love earned First Team All-Big 12 honors while Henri Veesaar and Tobe Awaka were honorable mention. At 80.0 points per game, Arizona led the Big 12 and was the first Big 12 team since Baylor in 2020-21 to average 80 or more points. After starting the year 4-5 through the first nine games, the Cats won 13 of the next 14 to surge back into the national discussion. At the end of the season, Arizona ranked 13th in the final coaches poll and 15th in the final AP poll. Freshman Carter Bryant was the 9th overall pick in the NBA Draft, the fifth Wildcat to be selected in the draft under Lloyd's tuteledge.
USA BASKETBALL In the summer of 2024, Lloyd led USA Basketball's U18 team to a 6-0 record on the way to the gold medal at the FIBA AmeriCup in Argentina. He followed that up by guiding the U19 team to the top of the podium after a perfect 7-0 mark at the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup in Switzerland alongside Arizona freshman Koa Peat.

Diana Madaras also hosted a reception honoring club members Ricky Hunley (inducted into the AZ Sports Hall of Fame) and Bob Logan (who just published his book, "Let Your Path Find You").
We have welcomed our Virtual Viewers and promoted the Red Badge Selfies. Thanks to the hosts of our successful EAT (Events Around Town) program, which has enabled members to meet throughout the community for fun, food and fellowship!
Our mixers have been well attended, as have our many Fellowship gatherings - including the new Agave (Mescal and Tequila) and Axe-throwing groups. The Book Club, Cycling, Golf, Hiking, Whiskey and Wine Fellowships are very active and popular.
Collaboration:
Our Global Grant for a vocational training program in Senegal has been submitted and approved! Much appreciation to Barbara Kiernan (Catalina Club), the District 5500 Global Grants coordinator, to Jim Lubinski who will be heading this project and to Elijah Ndoye, who will play a critical role in implementation.
We were sponsors of the District 5500 conference, where our member El Ndoye performed and gave a beautifully inspirational speech.

Community:
Our many and varied service projects benefit Southern Arizona in myriad ways: Food Bank, Tucson Clean and Beautiful (We've adopted Oracle Road, between River and Wetmore - be sure to look out for our sign when you drive by!), Triangle Y, Camp Lawton, Salvation Army, Youth Services (Interact, Rotaract, Youth Exchange, RYLA), Reading Coaches at Robison, The Haven, Boys & Girls Club, TRAK, AZ Trail maintenance, our Ride To End Polio and the pending Downtown Mural Project.
We have taken a tour of the Steele Children's Research Center, contributed to the UA and Pima scholarship funds as well as TRVFA (The Rotary Vocational Fund of Arizona).
Compassion:
Sadly, we have lost Rotarians and family members during these three months; the outpouring of love and support has been so needed, welcomed and appreciated as we said farewell to Burt Struthers, Nan Rollings, Jan Green, and Karen LaMaster.
We have contributed to the Rotary Disaster Relief Funds to help fire victims in LA and flood victims in Texas and, importantly, we are helping to end polio! There are only two countries left, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and we are making progress through Rotary International and our RTEP.
Report card: Thanks to you all. We did so well with all of our Cs that I give us an A!
What's next?
A lot! Our Nifty 19th car show is shaping up to be one of the best ever! We will have our Friday night dinner to celebrate our car show exhibitors and volunteers. Huge thanks to Dave White, the Executive and TLT teams - as well as all of our fellow Rotarians and friends who contribute so much.
El Tour de Tucson is November 22 and we have a team of riders participating Ride to End Polio: Matt Blair; Luis Hernandez; Gary Hirsch; Kandy Hirsch; Dan Kalm; Bob Morken; Lee Olitzky; Alan Rogers and Jonathan Walkup. Our Indoor Ride team includes: Dana Cole; Jo DeChatelet; Rich Flynn; Nancy Gutt;Charlotte Harris; Gary Hirsch-leader; Jennifer Hoffman; Sean Hoffman; Dot Kret; Ann Lancero; Bobby Larson; David Lex; David Lovitt; Jim Lubinski; Ernie Montagne; Steve Pickering; Darrell Stewart; Hugh Thompson and Bruce Tunze.
John Hewko, from Rotary International in Chicago, will be again participating in the ride and will be a featured speaker at the pre-ride Friday night dinner.

The October Events Around Town (EATS) lunches on Wednesday, October 8th gave Rotary members another reason to smile — and maybe loosen their belts a little! Small groups gathered across Tucson to share delicious meals, good stories, and that signature Rotary camaraderie that always fills the room.
From the creative dishes at Redbird Scratch Kitchen to the cozy vibe at Locale, the hearty favorites at Rocco’s Little Chicago, and the vibrant atmosphere at Miramonte, members enjoyed a midday getaway filled with great company and even better conversation.
A big shout-out to our hosts — Mark Irvin, John Duval, Glenn Ewing, Chuck Sawyer, Dot Kret, and Bruce Jacobs — for making sure each table felt welcome and well-fed.
EATS lunches continue to remind us that fellowship isn’t just what we do — it’s who we are. Until next time, keep your appetite open for more Rotary fun around town!

Please bring in your ticket money, ticket stubs, and unsold tickets to the Ticket Table on Wed., Oct. 15. If you won’t be attending the meeting, you can drop off at the office before the meeting or bring to the Command Center at the Car Show on Sat. Oct. 18.
If you plan to buy or sell tickets online, the last day to do so is Oct. 15.
If you plan to donate to the Car Show, you can write a check to the Rotary Club of Tucson Foundation (with Car Show in the memo line) and bring to the Oct. 15 meeting or mail to the office.
You can ask Dorinna to charge your account for your tickets or for a donation.

Rotarians gathered at the beautiful home of Jeff and Tiana Ronstadt for an evening that truly lived up to its “spirited” reputation. The Rotary Whisky Fellowship brought together whisky enthusiasts for good conversation, laughter, and a delightful tasting adventure.
Each guest arrived with their own “interesting bottle,” sparking curiosity and plenty of friendly debate over favorite pours. From smooth single malts to bold blends, everyone found something new to enjoy.
A big thank-you to Jeff and Tiana for opening their home and creating such a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It was an evening of great company, memorable flavors, and classic Rotary fellowship — a perfect midweek break!

The Rotary Club of Tucson Cycling Fellowship will start up once again. The dates are November 8th and November 15th. The Ride starts 8 AM at the St Philips Plaza Campbell and River on the South side near the REN coffee shop. We will ride the loop going West. The ride is for all riders of any ability and the pace and distance is entirely up to the rider. This ride is meant to be a fun training ride in preparation for the El Tour de Tucson. Riders should wear Rotary jerseys if possible.
Please note that the November 9th hike will be on a Sunday, to accommodate, the numerous events & activities already scheduled leading into the Thanksgiving holiday. For this adventure, we will be giving “thanks” for one of the beautiful trails on the front of the Catalina range with a return visit to Pima Canyon after a few years, not on our schedule. Beginning from the Iris O. Dewhirst Trailhead the hike ascends from the Foothills neighborhood quickly leaving metropolitan Tucson behind as we will ascend the south face of Pusch ridge following the usually dry streambed until we reach the first dam. This hike is moderate in difficulty with a total distance of just over 6 miles and 800 vertical feet. Hike time will be advised as we get closer to the date and with the trailhead being in-town, offering sufficient parking, We will meet at the Iris O. Dewhirst Trailhead.
The Rotary Club of Tucson members will participate in the El Tour de Tucson on Saturday, November 22, 2025, raising funds for Rotary International’s PolioPlus program. This premier cycling event features routes from 32 to 102 miles, all starting and finishing at the Tucson Convention Center.
Local Rotarians will ride as part of the "Ride to End Polio" team. Donations to support these riders are encouraged.
Community members can support the effort by donating to riders or joining the ride. Every dollar helps bring the world closer to being polio-free.
