The weeks are flying by and I am enjoying the start of my term as President.  We had a great mixer at TopGolf last Wednesday with 102 attendees.  From new members like, Cindy Barbee-Suggs and returning member Ann Courtney to  Rotaractors from our U of A club to long term member Gordon Graham and his wife Nancy; we had great participation.  Everyone seemed to have a fun time, enjoyed the venue and the fellowship (thanks Fonda!).

On the speaker front we have had a range of good programs to date, my thanks to Program Committee Chair, Ken Tucker (and side-kick Ted Kiracofe).  Even when we had AV trouble we were able to make some lemonade out of lemons by posting a recording of the Mayor’s program online.  We had such positive feedback we are in the process of posting all our weekly programs online.  You will be able to find them on our website homepage.  Click on the tab, Recent Programs, then click on 2018-2019 programs and you will find them, (thanks Dorinna!).

This weekend, Ellie Paterson, Bob Shaff and I attended the District Membership conference in Green Valley.  There were some very good presentations and thoughtful discussions around attracting new members and reflecting on the Rotary Brand, what it means and how we can better communicate it.

We were asked to answer the question, what’s Rotary?  It was suggested that your response needs to meet the 2/20 second rule.  That is, you need to start your answer in 2 seconds (meaning you know it) and it should last no more than 20 seconds.  Rotary’s “better answer” to this question is:

We’re a membership organization of local business, professional and community leaders.

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships, and through that, we’re able to get things done in our community and across the globe.

Rotarians are People of Action!

Saying this succinctly starts the conversation.  It was suggested that this is only a guideline and that each of our answers will be different, tailored more to you and your own personal experience.  So next time you are talking to a prospect and they ask you “What is Rotary” or “why did YOU join Rotary”, what is your answer?  I’ll share mine:

In terms of organizations, it is the best decision I ever made!

Rotary has allowed me to create long and lasting friendships; to network with business, professional and community leaders and to achieve meaningful accomplishments, not only in Tucson, but around the globe.

So, if I was to ask you Why you joined Rotary, what would you say?  Have you thought about taking advantage of your free offer to bring a prospective new member to lunch, paid for by the Club?  And remember that we are not growing our Club just to grow, but to enable us to meet our current commitments; to do even more in our community and to sustain OUR Remarkable Rotary Club!
