President CHUCK opened the meeting and gave information about services for our friend and fellow Rotarian FRANK ZUNNO. DIANE CANNON gave our inspiration, reminding us of life’s brief dash. MIKE DALTON joined GARY HIRSCH to lead us in the Pledge and Song, another stirring rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner.”
ASHLEY ELAINE YORK introduced our Guests and Visiting Rotarians. We had a single Birthday Rotarian, Past President, Past Car Show Chair and Amazing Electrical Engineer ROGER HARWELL. ROGER spoke about the achievements of the Scholarship Committee this year ($52,000 of scholarships awarded, including 5 at Pima, 3 new and 9 continuing at the U of A.) He noted that applications for scholarships are collected in the spring.

Past President BOB SHAFF introduced our newest member DAVID EPPIHIMER and awarded him a blue badge. DAVID has a long career in fundraising for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and is the current chair of the Republican Party in Pima County. DAVID has been a Rotarian in three different clubs, serving as president of the Sunrise Club. Welcome DAVID!.jpg)
Sergeant at Arms BOBBY LARSON recognized member CLINT MABIE for the recent opening of the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona’s new campus at 5049 East Broadway. CLINT welcomes any non-profits who are looking to share office space at the campus. Past President JON WANG generously donated his tickets to the USC game for an “instant auction” after the meeting.

- President CHUCK reviewed ticket sales (returns at 50%) and urged us all to sell more tickets!
- Social Chair FONDA INSLEY reminded us of the next Social Mixer at the Maverick on 9/27.
- …and Past President JON WANG took full advantage of his past presidential 11 minutes to promote Rotary Community Service shirts.
Past President SCOTT VAUGHAN introduced David James of the non-profit recording collaborative Mudshark Recording in Flagstaff. David introduced our speaker, multiple Emmy winner and Producer, Recording Engineer .jpg)
and Mixing Engineer Geoff Emerick. Mr. Emerick spoke about his life from age 15 spent working with the Beatles to break new frontiers in sound and tonality. Among the amazing stories he told, Mr. Emerick spoke about how he placed microphones 2” away from the string quartets while recording “Eleanor Rigby” to get the driving, urgent sound. He also spoke about dismantling the base drum in “Revolver”, filling it with batting and leaving the back surface off the make the base beat more forward (he nearly got fired for that innovation). Mr. Emerick compared the creative process of working with the Beatles in the studio to painting – he would find a compelling tonality in a piece and build the rest around it like a picture. He also confirmed that there are no hidden messages in any Beatles songs, and that Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was based on a picture drawn by one of the band member’s children. Thank you, David and Geoff, for a fascinating presentation.Mr. Emerick signed a book for our lending library: Book Signing: “Elephants Cannot Dance”.
President CHUCK closed our meeting with a great quote from the Beatles: “All you need is love.”
