President CHUCK asked for a moment of silence to remember FRANK ZUNNO. JAN GREEN gave a truly poetic commemoration of FRANK who will be sorely missed in our Club. President CHUCK also asked for a moment of silence for the passing of DAVID LOVITT’s Mom, Cornelia.
PAT LENNAN gave the inspiration defining success as having lived, laughed and loved mightily. BOB HOPKINS led us in the Pledge and Song, singing “America the Beautiful” accompanied by the mellifluous GARY HIRSCH. KAREN PUTNAM announced our guests and visiting Rotarians.
We had three Birthday Rotarians:
- Past President BILL GILKINSON started by reading President CHUCK his Miranda rights before releasing photos of CHUCK from his yearbook at Catalina High School. BILL is celebrating his 93rd birthday, his 49th year in Rotary, and is “happy to be anywhere” in his words. Happy Birthday, BILL!
- DAVID PASHKOW apologized for being the only non Salpointe graduate in the room but redeemed himself by inviting us all to the Pumpkin Fiesta on 10/6 and 10/7 at the Sonoran Glass School. Happy Birthday, DAVID!
- KATHLEEN WICKS took a moment out from the craziness of two children under age 3, four dogs at home, and two rescue dogs at work to celebrate her birthday by sponsoring Past President JIM LUBINSKI’s Ride to End Polio. Happy Birthday, KATHLEEN!
We also welcomed three new members:
PAT LENNAN re-introduced PAT PATTON to the Club, returning from a six-year hiatus in El Paso. In addition to earning a BA, MA, PhD, and MBA, Dr. PATTON was a cheerleader and grew up on the same street as Past President ROGER HARWELL. Welcome back PAT!
Past President ARNIE JACOBSEN re-introduced JOE DANISZEWSKI with an extensive list of eight key points (ok I only got a few of them…) JOE led the Catalina Council of the Boy Scouts for 35 years, taught high school and middle school Spanish, is an Eagle Scout along with his two sons, and along with wife Leah is a member of St. Pius and the Pima Interfaith Council. Welcome back JOE!
BRUCE TUNZE introduced BRUCE ELLWEIN. BRUCE is a Past President twice over at other clubs in his 14-year Rotary history. He is a retired pilot and recalls playing soccer with the Rotary logo on his city league uniform. Welcome BRUCE!
Sergeant at Arms and Auctioneer Extraordinaire BOBBY LARSON thanked all the members who have donated game tickets and then auctioned tickets generously donated by JIM RONSTADT to the USC game .We had the following announcements:
- President CHUCK invited everyone to attend the District Conference on 9/28 and 29, and then took us through the ticket sales results with 49% of the membership reporting.
- FONDA INSLEY invited everyone to the monthly Social Mixer at the Maverick on 9/27.
- Past President CLIFF BOWMAN begged, pleaded, and cajoled everyone to sign up for volunteer slots (hurry, spots are going fast!)
- Past President JON WANG invited everyone who does not already own one to purchase Rotary community service shirts before the Car Show.

MATT BLAIR introduced our speaker Bob Hoffman – President of the Tucson Roadrunners, Tucson’s Professional Ice Hockey Team. Bob has devoted 29 years to developing the sport of hockey, helping start three teams and develop countless professional players and coaches. The Roadrunners are a member of the American Hockey League, the minor league for the National Hockey League. The Roadrunners are associated with the Arizona Coyotes. In their second year, the Roadrunners averaged 4,255 tickets sold over the season for a total of 165,950 total. In addition, they have developed more than 100 corporate partners, donated over $100,000 to local charities and have become involved extensively with the Tucson community by funding DEK hockey rinks at the Boys and Girls Club and donating street hockey equipment to local schools. The Roadrunners truly want to be Tucson’s Professional Team. Mr. Hoffman signed a book for our lending library: “Green Pants”.
