Rotary History Moment Presented by Char Harris on August 11, 2021 (JTED program)

For 100 years, our Rotary Club has focused on youth projects, a number of them to assure success in occupations as adults!

You may recall that Boy Scouts and Camp Lawton was our first civic project.  Fellow Rotarian, Jim Ruboyianes, shared with me that the Boy Scout movement was started in England with the purpose of giving city boys experience in the outdoors in preparation for when they served in the military.

Our club has been providing scholarships for students attending the University of Arizona for over 70 years and to Pima Community College students, since its inception, for over 50 years.

In 2005, our involvement with two programs in Sunnyside School District’s Parents as Teachers, were expanded in their “Read With Me” and “Fathers Matters” programs, which also served teen parents.  Saturday and evening programs provided skills, for fathers, while reading with their students.

Funding assisted the YWCA of Southern Arizona in several programs to decrease the number of women in poverty with job training.

Tucson Youth Development received funding to support the participation of low income youth through a successful health occupations internship.

Youth On Their Own funds assisted homeless and vulnerable students to meet their basic or emergency needs so they could focus more on staying in school.

The Caregiver Institute of Tucson received support to provide training to address the increasing need for professional certified caregivers in our community.

Funding to GAP Ministries provided training of chefs of tomorrow.

For a number of years, continuing annually, Rotarians have supported the Rotary Vocational Fund of Arizona to provide financial assistance to further vocational studies of people who qualify under Arizona law to obtain such support.

Job Path received support to provide impoverished individuals with education and job training in local high-demand careers.

Interfaith Community Services support through their “Steps for Stability” program focused on assisting low-income single mothers which included a job resource center.

With our support of JTED for our centennial project, know that we are on a 100 year continuum of ensuring the success of Tucson’s youth and the vulnerable with job training that will serve them today as well as in their future.

Thank you Rotary Club of Tucson!
