Dr. Roberta Diaz Brinton leads the Center for Innovation in Brain Science at the University of Arizona, a research / biotech ecosystem devoted to developing therapeutics for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and ALS.Dr. Brinton is an internationally recognized expert on Alzheimer’s whose discoveries have led to innovative therapeutics to prevent, delay, and treat the disease. She is currently conducting four clinical trials, including three National Institute on Aging Phase 2 clinical trials: the REGEN-BRAIN© trial to regenerate the Alzheimer’s brain, two clinical trials of PhytoSERM to decrease risk of Alzheimer’s in women, and an open label clinical trial for Parkinson’s disease.
She has authored over 250 scientific publications, holds multiple patents, and founded 2 biotech start-ups. Her honors include Scientist of the Year from the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, Goodes Prize for Excellence in Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery, Arizona Bioscience Researcher of the Year and U.S. Presidential Citizens Medal, the highest civilian honor, for STEM education to advance underrepresented discoverers.
Age and Neurodegenerative Diseases – It’s Not All Bad News
Age-associated neurodegenerative diseases are the second leading cause of death worldwide. As the global population ages, the prevalence and societal impact of these diseases will become ever greater — with annual costs in the US expected to exceed 1 trillion dollars by 2050.
The good news: Dr. Roberta Diaz Brinton and her team are addressing four neurodegenerative diseases of aging: Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and ALS. She and her colleagues at the University of Arizona Center for Innovation in Brain Science are conducting research to determine the underlying causes of age-associated neurodegenerative disease and developing therapeutics to prevent and treat these diseases.
