Preventing Cognitive Decline and Dementia
Allan A. Anderson, MD, MMM, DLFAPA

An expert in dementia care, Dr. Anderson has a track record of developing and incorporating innovative dementia care practice models in outpatient memory clinics and for specialized assisted living dementia programs. He is a strong proponent of a team approach to Alzheimer’s and dementia care which includes training interdisciplinary teams to deliver person-centered care to address the needs of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and their family members.

As Director of Banner Alzheimer’s Institute in Tucson, Dr. Anderson is working to create and implement education and training programs to expand the number of Alzheimer’s and dementia trained health care workers who can deliver more cost-effective care.

Dr. Anderson is also leading the development and implementation of cutting-edge research projects at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute to make major contributions to the scientific study, treatment and prevention of cognitive decline and hopefully prevent Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
President's Quarterly Letter
It is hard to believe that I have just finished the 3rd quarter of my term as your president. And oh, what a quarter it has been. It is hard not to focus on our two Club Assemblies but first we need to look back at some of our amazing programs.

It seemed fitting we started the year with George Hammond and his economic update given our own “economic update” we received with the rising costs of food, beverage and labor. We enjoyed music and dance along with some more sobering information from the Tucson Crime Free Coalition.

We enjoyed an insightful update from Rear Admiral Brad Rosen during Navy Week and were entertained by Kevin Leman on traits found in the birth order of children. Perhaps the crown jewel of the quarter was Bobby Larson announcing our donation to JTED of $252,000.

We gave back to our community with the Rillito River clean up and internationally providing funding to El Grupo, children’s education in Mexico and ShelterBox for aid to Turkey.

Our two Club Assemblies came about due to the cost increase we received in our contract that goes into effect July 1st. These were the first Assemblies we have had in years and I am grateful for all the ideas and feedback generated as a result. We have already implemented some of the suggestions and there will be many more to follow. During the second assembly there was a vote taken on staying at four meetings or going to three per month with 70% voting to go to three. That is still something we are discussing and will be finalizing those decisions in the coming weeks.

I want to thank everyone who was able to participate in the assemblies and the survey we sent out. I welcome your suggestions as we continue to chart the future of our Club.

Social Mixer at Vero Amore A Success!
Everyone enjoyed the Social Replacement Mixer last Wednesday evening at Vero Amore.  Thanks to Alan Rogers for all the work to put this together.  Fun times and lots of Fellowship!  Hope you can attend a Home Hospitality event during the week of April 19th.  All events are up on the website.

Social Event @ Vero Amore ~ 3/29/23
Home Hospitality Week is Here for 2023!
Our Home Hospitality events begin April 16th and go through the 22nd.  These social events will replace our Wednesday, April 19th lunch meeting.  We want to thank all the members who have graciously volunteered to open up their homes and host an event.  This a wonderful way to relax, meet fellow Rotarians outside of the lunch meeting and have some fun! All must register for this event on the club website www.tucsonrotary.org  under upcoming events on the top left column, be sure to register on the event you'd like to attend. Please also register your guests, fee is $30 and will be billed to your account.

If you have any questions, please call the Rotary office at 623-2281.  Again, these events take the place of our lunch meeting on April 19th.  Our next regular lunch meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 26th at TCC.

Miles of Memories
Miles of Memories

I shared with those in attendance on the 13th that this next year I want us to share “Miles of Memories” together. I referenced the memories we have created together over the years and the impact we have had in so many others lives as well as our own.

The children and the parents receiving the grass ball field in San Carlos transformed from a dirt lot. The recipients and their families that obtained their mobility by receiving a wheelchair in Nogales. The memories of our member that participated along with the memories of working together on various local workday projects. Our hiking, golf, home hospitality fellowships and the list goes on.

I ask for you to help me on “our journey” over this next year by sponsoring me in the “Miles of Memories.” My goal is to walk a minimum of 35 miles a week, 1,825 for the year and honestly want to surpass 2000+. I would like for you to consider donating by the mile and we will share the outcome at the first meeting of each month on my progress.

Donations can go to the Foundation toward a Paul Harris, the President’s Discretionary Fund, or others of your choosing. I want us to have fun on our journey over this next year and to INSPIRE each other and our benefactors through the world of Rotary.

Thank you for your support in making our 102nd year one where we create memories together.
