Stories
UA Basketball Program
Tommy Lloyd is the Head Coach for Men’s Basketball at University of Arizona. As a player he was on the team at Kelso High School in the state of Washington and at Walla Walla Community College and then Whitman college where he earned his degree in Biology. He went on to play professionally in Australia and in Germany.

He was on the staff of legendary coach Mark Few at Gonzaga University for 22 years and was projected to be Head Coach when Mark Few retired.

Coach Lloyd has been at Arizona for only one year and has already set numerous records in general and has accomplished such extraordinary feats for a first-year coach as will probably never be equaled in Division One college athletics.

Mystery Editor ~ 9/14/22
President BRUCE JACOBS welcomed members to our meeting and, after the delicious buffet presented by the TCC staff, called the meeting to order at 12:15.  We watched another in the series of ‘Imagine’ videos. DG Anita McDonald led us in the Pledge and KHRIS DODGE accompanied us as we sang My Country ‘Tis of Thee (which, appropriately, sounded a lot like ‘G-d Save the King’). We toasted the success of the Ukraine in reclaiming part of their country from the Russian aggressors.

DOT KRET cleverly taught us that inspiration can come from anywhere – even our food! And that, “The next time things aren’t going well, remember this, it's true. If a taco can completely fall apart and still be awesome - So can you!”

KHRIS DODGE welcomed our guests, including former District Governor Ellie Patterson and District Governor Elect, Don Jorgenson.

Our speaker was introduced by District 5500 AG Bob Grady.  ‘Ms. Math Lady’ (AKA District Governor Anita McDonald) thanked President BRUCE and our club’s Board for assistance at the District level.  She described her personal journey from Detroit to the District Governorship and outlined her priorities for this coming year:
To make an impact on reading, math and literacy for K – 8.
To strengthen and grow Rotaract for young adults
To increase understanding and awareness of DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion)
To increase awareness, visibility and engagement of Rotary throughout the District
To create lasting impact through the Rotary Foundation

She added that RI President Jennifer Jones’ initiatives include Imagine: DEI and Imagine: Empowering Girls. DG McDonald invited us to participate in the District Conference, September 23 – 25, at Casino Del Sol, the theme of which is Rotary Ignites Change and the mission of the Action Plan is Impact, Reach, Engage, Adapt. She urged us to tell the Rotary story as it takes our message to the world and builds bridges to peace. She signed the book ‘Kindness Makes Me Stronger’ for the Make Way for Books library.

We wished happy birthday to JOE DANISZEWSKI, DIANA MADERAS and TOM McKINNEY – all of whom were born on the Ides of September!

JIM LUBINSKI introduced new member and UA grad JASON FLAX, who works for Lovitt & Touche in Insurance and Risk Management: Employee Benefits. Welcome JASON, whose birthday is December 30 - he said that is because his dad was a CPA!

KHRIS DODGE called DG McDonald into service to pick the winning raffle ticket: $80 was awarded, but the big jackpot is still growing.  JON WANG donated two tickets to the UA football game, which sold for $100.

Miles of Memories
Miles of Memories

I shared with those in attendance on the 13th that this next year I want us to share “Miles of Memories” together. I referenced the memories we have created together over the years and the impact we have had in so many others lives as well as our own.

The children and the parents receiving the grass ball field in San Carlos transformed from a dirt lot. The recipients and their families that obtained their mobility by receiving a wheelchair in Nogales. The memories of our member that participated along with the memories of working together on various local workday projects. Our hiking, golf, home hospitality fellowships and the list goes on.

I ask for you to help me on “our journey” over this next year by sponsoring me in the “Miles of Memories.” My goal is to walk a minimum of 35 miles a week, 1,825 for the year and honestly want to surpass 2000+. I would like for you to consider donating by the mile and we will share the outcome at the first meeting of each month on my progress.

Donations can go to the Foundation toward a Paul Harris, the President’s Discretionary Fund, or others of your choosing. I want us to have fun on our journey over this next year and to INSPIRE each other and our benefactors through the world of Rotary.

Thank you for your support in making our 102nd year one where we create memories together.
