President MARGARET HIGGENS surrendered her President’s post for the November 1st meeting and gave incoming 2024 KURTIS DAWSON, a chance to get his feet wet.  With expectations high, KURTIS kicked off the meeting on-time at 12 noon from the Tucson Convention Center with 82 Rotarians attending the weekly meeting and promptly sent the membership to enjoy the TCC’s excellent buffet. Returning from the buffet line, the official opening of the meeting featured the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag lead by BRUCE TUNZE and the rendition of “God Bless America”.  KHRIS DODGE was on the piano.  A heartwarming, enthusiastic and really very loud Inspiration was given by CHRIS EDWARDS, owner of Tucson Appliance. Thanks to the AV guys for controlling the sound levels.

 

Incoming President KURTIS let everyone know that the business side of the meeting was taking place initially, suspending the typical program agenda to ensure adequate time for the new Community Service Round table sessions run by former RCOT Past President BRUCE JACOBS and committee chair DIANA MADARAS.

 

Before the community sessions began, KURTIS moved forward with the business agenda. CHRIS KIM, filling in for Sargent at Arms regular DAN KALM, introduced the guests followed by Happy Birthday wishes to JOE DANISZEWSKI. President-Elect KURTIS was quick to point out that only he was able to pronounce JOE’S last name properly since CHRIS KIM had some trouble at the podium introducing some of the guests.  Phonetics doesn’t always work in Tucson. 

 

On the serious side, JIM MURPHY honored member WALLY JOHNSON with his Blue Badge. Congrats WALLY!! An encore visit from CHRIS KIM sailed through the 25/50/25 Raffle with no one receiving the big dollars.

 

Continuing to ensure there was time for the Community Service session program, we went straight to the membership announcements. Highlights included John Hewko, Rotary International CEO upcoming to visit on November 15.  Since this will be a well attended meeting, all members and their guests must register on the website. A Car Show video was played and put together by Film Creations.  JEANNE ZETAH’S synopsis of Classics Car Show ticket sales of 22,962. Congratulations to all members and sponsors for contributing the endless hours that led to another successful Car Show event. We saw an upbeat video of our Exchange Student,  Kanon Nakamura. CHARLOTTE HARRIS talked about the Ride to End Polio. It is fast approaching so if you want to sponsor a rider please inform CHARLOTTE. ALAN ROGERS announced the two upcoming cycling events. AND AGAIN, there is no meeting November 8 but be sure to register for the November 15^th meeting.

 

PRESIDENT ELECT KURTIS introduced BRUCE JACOBS and DIANA MADARAS to kick off the Community Service. DIANA was off on a convention trip with her husband, however was able to join the group with a heart-warming video on how this session came together. Table session featured 13 tables of Community Service Projects. The goal today was to introduce these projects to the membership and sign-up volunteers. The author of this paper joined the Boys and Girls Club table and signed up to be part of the Thanksgiving Dinner held for the organization’s participants. Thank you, CEO, DENISE.

Good afternoon fellow hikers,

 

Thanks to all who provided feedback due to my conflicting schedule.  As El Tour de Tucson is on the second proposed date, we will be completing this hike on Sunday, November 12 with an 8AM start time.  

 

 

As the days are getting cooler and sunrise later, we will plan to meet at the Pima Canyon Trailhead at 1610 E Magee Rd at 7:45AM for the planned 8AM start.  Temperatures at start will be in the 50's at with afternoon highs projected in the mid 70's.  The distance to the first dam is 3.2 miles out, so 6.4 total miles with a vertical gain of 850 feet.  Anticipated hike time is 3-3.5 hours.  Although cooler, it will likely be a sunny day so dress appropriately, bring your sunscreen and have sufficient water and snacks.  Timing of our conclusion should be perfect for consideration of a bite to eat following.

At our lunch meeting on November 15th, Rotary International General Secretary and CEO John Hewko will be visiting and presenting to our club.  Since this will be a well attended meeting, all must register by Friday, 11/10/23 @ 3:00 p.m.  This meeting will be capped at 175 so we are encouraging all to register early.  If you would like to bring a guest, please register them as well.  The guest fee is $35 which will be billed to your account.  To register, go to the club website at www.tucsonrotary.org scroll down the left side under "Upcoming Events".  The buffet menu is listed on the registration page, but if you need a Vegan be sure to list your and your guest's light lunch in the Comment Section.  By registering, you will be helping the office give a more accurate guarantee of meals for this meeting.

Handbags of Hope Service Project.  Inspire, uplift, and encourage women in treatment as they transition into a new phase in their lives! Rotarians are invited to donate toiletry items which will be tucked inside new or gently used women’s handbags. Each woman will be gifted a handbag brimming with small soaps, lotion, shampoo, toothbrushes, sunscreen, lip balm, and hygiene products during this winter holiday season. Hotel-sized or small items will best fit into the handbags. The Haven helps women heal from substance use disorders, stay connected with their families, and give them hope for their futures. Many of their clients come to The Haven with very limited belongings. By gifting them a handbag with toiletries and hygiene products, women have the basic necessities to start their new lives. The ribbon cutting for the new Angel Charity for Children World of Play was held Thursday, October 26.  The World of Play project was one of the Rotary Club of Tucson’s Secondary Beneficiaries of our Centennial Celebration Car Show in 2021.

 

Located inside the Zoo adjacent to the Conservation Learning Center, World of Play is accessible for children of all ages and physical abilities. In this unique, sensory nature playground, young guests can explore the redwoods as they scale a 30-ft sequoia tree, chill out in Antarctica as they travel through a cool ice cave, and sleuth for fossils at a dig pit. There is a covered area for parents and grandparents to sit and relax as the kids get the zoomies out. The Zoo leadership expressed their gratefulness to the generous donors including Angel Charities, Tucson Rotary and to Tucson voters who have helped to bring this wonderful new addition and learning experience to the Zoo.
