DARK DAY: There will be no Rotary Club of Tucson lunch meeting on February 1, 2017 due to the Gem Show scheduled at the DoubleTree. Since this is a scheduled Dark Day, no make up is required.
Celebrate with the Club the results of our 2016 Tucson Classics Car Show. The 2016 effort will be reviewed, peopled thanked, the Grand Total revealed and then we will give it all away to some awesome charities. Did we break the ‘Total Raised’ $1,000,000 mark this year? Our 2nd meeting of 2017 began with her majesty, PRESIDENT ELLIE announcing that our club began with four vocational working people – and this February is vocational service month. Our Inspiration was from JIM MURPHY. JIM spoke about truth in life and Rotary. GARY HIRSCH played for the Pledge and Song which was given by LIZ MCMAHON singing “God Bless America”.
The one and only KEVIN WONG introduced 3 visitors and 10 guests of Rotarians. Our two Happy Birthdays were CHRIS MONSON – Aberdeen Management & Development and STU “Man Around Town” GOLDMAN.
Michael Drake, District 5500 Foundation Chair recognized DICK KOLASA and Sandy Kolasa for being a major donor of $10,000 to the cause of eradicating polio around the world. Congratulations to you both!
SAA FONDA INSLEY fined LARRY ADAMSON for his participation in the Inauguration and fined MERLE HENKEL for his cell phone ringing at last week’s meeting.
Under the Announcement category, PRESIDENT ELLIE needs hosts for RLI on 1/21/17 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Also, car show results will be announced at our meeting on 1/18/17. Cirque de Soleil will be on April 19th at 7:30 p.m. at the TCC. PRESIDENT ELLIE suggests going as a group.
FONDA announced a happy, happy hour at the Trident II on January 26th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – be there or be square! MIKE ORCUTT and DAVE GALLAHER will conduct a work project at Make Way For Books from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on 1/21/16, Saturday morning. Also, on April 14th and 15th of 2017 there will be a Triangle Y Camp two day work project sponsored by Mike and Dave. Mark your calendars. Finally, Happy Jacksons were given by JAN GREEN modeling his Clemson T-Shirt and BOB LOGAN presented a Happy Jackson for his son’s media work and award.
Our presentation was introduced by Pisano ERNIE MINCHELLA. He spoke about our new and wonderful Police Chief, Chris Magnus. This new blood in our police department should give everyone hope that our city is in good hands. Unbelievably his first assignment was to cut $14 million from his budget ---- What! How is that possible? He has to reduce crime and increase public safety at the same time. He is also responsible for de-escalation training – using less force in the police force.
The Chief has also brought forth the idea of a mental health crisis team. This police department received 375,000 calls last year. 1 out of 7 calls – 14% - 53,000 calls were for mental health issues. Clearly, the police need a mental health professional with them on these kinds of calls. At least the City of Tucson recognizes this much needed area of policing. As Rotarians, we all support our new Chief.
Finally, PRESIDENT ELLIE toasted our police officers and their families who put their life on the line daily for us in the community of Tucson.
We have two new members that have recently joined our club and they both happen to be named Liz.
Liz McMahon is the Director of Development with Catholic Community Services, and has worked in resource development for 28 years. She’s been with Catholic Community Services for over eleven years, consulted for five years before that, spent two years with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and worked with TMC Foundation for 11 years, starting as a Special Events Coordinator and finishing as Vice President and Chief Development Officer.
In addition to her stellar career in fundraising, Liz is a singer and actor. In fact, she was one of the earliest actors at the Gaslight Theatre, back in 1977. She’s performed with Actors Repertory Theatre, Saguaro Dinner Theatre, the Invisible Theatre, and Arizona Onstage Productions. Liz has done one-woman shows covering Patsy Cline, Rosemary Clooney and Sophie Tucker.
These days Liz is one of the Divas of Lisa Otey and the Desert Divas, with whom she has sung in Mexico, Spain and France. The group performs locally about ten times a year, and had two Christmas concerts in December at the Gaslight Music Hall in Oro Valley. Liz has been married to the love of her life, Tom McMahon, for 41 years. Both their fathers were born in Scotland, but Liz and Tom have seen much more of the country than either of their fathers, having made five trips there visiting 18 of Scotland’s islands. Please introduce yourself to Liz when you get a chance!
Liz Baker is a native Tucsonan. She was a scientist from the time she could walk, and got her start in science fairs and research competitions at an early age. Through her research, Liz won over $260,000 as a three-time winner at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and represented the United States as a delegate to China with American Association for the Advancement of Science. Throughout high school, Liz interned with Jane Goodall Institute's ChimpanZoo studying chimpanzees welfare in captivity. She went on to earn her Master of Science in Evolutionary and Comparative Psychology from the University of St. Andrews, and became a researcher for Koko the signing gorilla at The Gorilla Foundation.
Today Liz serves as Deputy Director of SARSEF: Southern Arizona Research, Science and Engineering Foundation – an organization that empowers 95,000 K-12 students across Southern Arizona in STEM annually through free educational outreach involving critical thinking, problem-solving, and inquiry-based research. Liz also serves as Policy Chair on the International Science Fair Advisory Council, Membership Vice President for the American Association of University Women Tucson Branch, and is a Tucson Public Voices Fellow through the Op Ed Project. Through her work with SARSEF, Liz has received honors such as the Tucson Hispanic Chamber’s 40 Under 40, Women of Influence Education Champion, Greater Tucson Leadership 2016, the Award for Excellence in K-12 STEM Diversity, and Grand Prize at Social Venture Partners’ Fast Pitch.
Liz enjoys spending time with her boyfriend, Nick, sister, Meagan, and romping around with her two cats and “large-as-a-horse” goldendoodle, Aurora. Liz enjoys "bonding time" with her sister while training for their black belts in Tae Kwon Do. If you haven’t met Liz yet, please take a moment to introduce yourself to our youngest member!
Fantastic New Work Project for Rotary Club of Tucson,
This project will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at "Make Way For Books" from 9:00 am to 12:00 Noon, 700 N. Stone Ave., Tucson, AZ 85705 — (520) 398-6451. We will gather at 8:50 AM with some morning goodies and we will proceed to sand and paint bookshelves for a three hour period.We have been requested to only have 20 folks. So if you want to start your morning off feeling good about yourself and Rotary please join me, Mike Orcutt and Dave Gallaher (Co projects committee dudes) for a good time.

Bob Logan celebrated a Happy Jackson by telling us about his son’s achievement.
Sean Logan, son of fellow Rotarian, Bob Logan, helped produce the award winning “Hooked: Heroin’s Hold on Arizona” that he had presented to our club. It won an Emmy award and a DuPont Award from Columbia University. Sean is now a 5th year senior at Cronkite University of Journalism and Mass Communication and the executive producer of the follow-up to that documentary. It is called “Hooked Rx: From Prescription to Addiction.” It is sponsored by the Arizona Broadcasters Association and it was simulcast on every station in the State of Arizona on Tuesday, January 10th at 6:30 PM.

The program, which was autographed by several of the 1950 Clemson players, was sent to the Rotary Club of Clemson last year and auctioned off at their Grains, Grapes and Gifts community benefit.
Congratulations to the Clemson Fighting Tigers for their 2016 College Football Playoff Championship! RCoT now has two Rotary Club of Clemson banners—one to stay at the Rowdy Table! Thank you to Rotary President, Jonathan Hungerford, of the RCoC!
Our District 5500 Spring Conference will be held in Yuma this coming April. Exciting Speakers, Interesting Programs and all-around good fun for all. Mark your calendars for April 27-30. It will be held at the Pivot Point Conference Center, 310 N. Madison Ave. near the Hilton Garden Inn.
