Kirk Reed is a third-generation Rotarian. His grandfather was a Rotary charter member in 1922, and his father served as District Governor in the Atlanta area. His mother continues to be an active Rotarian at the age of 97.
Kirk has been a Rotarian for 27 years in Illinois and Arizona. He especially enjoys biking in Tucson’s Ride to End Polio, Rotary’s largest fundraiser ever. (Rotarians raised almost $12,000,000 in one day in 2017!) Kirk continues to be a passionate supporter of The Rotary Foundation and led our 100th Anniversary Endowment Campaign.
In his professional life he was pastor of United Methodist congregations in the Chicago area for 37 years, most recently at Trinity Church in Wilmette, featured in the Hollywood movie Home Alone. Kirk also served as Adjunct Professor at the United Methodist seminary in Evanston, Illinois.
He is an Eagle Scout, a U.S. Army veteran, an avid reader, and a passionate fan of the Arizona Wildcats and the Chicago Cubs. Over the past two decades Kirk has visited all 30 major league baseball parks.
He and his wife Susan have 3 children and 7 grandchildren, living in Oregon, California, and Tucson.
His goal this year is to support and strengthen all 50 of our Rotary clubs in Southern Arizona.
Past President CLIFF BOWMAN gave a series of quotes for the inspiration including one from Albert Einstein: “Genius is 1% talent and 99% perspiration.” JEFF RONSTADT returned to his reign of terror, hoping to sing “My Bonnie Lies over the Ocean” in honor of John McCain, but relented and led us in “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” accompanied by GARY HIRSCH on the piano.
KAREN PUTNAM introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians and President CHUCK introduced our latest new member GARY FRANKS. GARY is continuing in the family business, Sunstreet Mortgage (formerly Ventana) and participates in a number of service clubs in addition to RCOT, hoping to instill a sense of service in his children and family. Among other interesting facts, GARY met his wife Ann while studying at the University of Warwick in England.
Sergeant at Arms BOBBY LARSON recognized MARK CLARK for his recent appearance in Tucson Lifestyle at the Pima Council on Aging’s Gala. MARK reminded everyone that September 21ST (the first day of Fall) is National Falls Prevention Day. ALAN ROGERS generously donated two tickets to the next UA Football game, and we had the following announcements:

FONDA INSLEY announced our first Monthly Social Mixer, Sept 27th at The Maverick.
Past President JIM LUBINSKI reminded us to attend the District 5500 Conference including Saturday nights’ reception/dinner in honor of incoming District Governor ELLIE PATTERSON.
Past President JIM MURPHY announced the upcoming release of the RFP for the Centennial Project where we are soliciting proposals for what will be a substantial set of grants and matching funds. The RFP is available on the RCOT website.
President CHUCK updated us on the current Car Show ticket sales.
NINA TRASOFF asked for a moment of silence to honor the passing of Tucson philanthropist Joan Kaye-Cawthorn.
Nina then continued the second half of our candidate interviews, which included the following improbable highlights:
Past President JIM MURPHY, leader of the Potted Plant People, skillfully avoided NINA’s pointed question about pot by railing against “dark money” in the campaign.
BOBBY LARSON standing in for Past President DAVE GALLAHER of the Shake, Rattle and Roll Party deflected the question of whether the party would sell car show tickets or just beer tickets.
Past President MARY MARTIN head of the Green Party stuck only to recycled promises, including asking not what her party can do for you, but what can you do for me?
And true to form, Past President CLIFF BOWMAN refused to answer NINA’s question and somehow managed to take five minutes to chant “Yes we can!”

MARK IRVIN introduced our speakers today Ali Farhang Chairman and Executive Director Kym Adair of NOVA Arizona Bowl “NOVA Arizona Bowl”. In just three years, the Arizona Bowl has delivered $30 M of economic impact to our region each year, while giving over $500,000 in grants and matching funds to local charities. Last year, bowl attendance was more than 40,000, and this year the Bowl Team is hoping to fill the stadium with the help of their “Top Deck for Education” plan which allows local school districts to sell tickets and share in revenue from the game. The Arizona Bowl has also allowed the RCOT to sell tickets to generate additional revenue for our Car Show. The Bowl is uniformly voted one of the best experiences for the teams that attend and is a great advertisement for Tucson. Thank you Ali and Kym!

President CHUCK closed our meeting with a quote from Vince Lombardi: "The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will."
Martha and I were joined by Bill Kouba and his wife Jillian for a refreshing morning hike on Mount Lemmon, Saturday, 8/25/18. We began at the summit trailheads and completed a 4 mile hike covering 1,600 vertical feet. The views were spectacular from the Upper Aspen trail as we ventured down to the Marshall Saddle. We completed the Lower Aspen trail for the second half of the hike and ended up at the Marshall Gulch trailhead. Our group was also sent off at LeBuzz in true Rotary fashion by Rich Flynn who joined us for a morning beverage.
The Rotary District 5500 Conference will be held on September 28-29, 2018 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 445 S. Alvernon. Register at www.rotaryd5500.org. Room rates at the DoubleTree are available at a special rate of $79 until mid September. The Rotary Club of Tucson will host a hospitality suite on Friday evening and also host a reception on Saturday evening for incoming District Governor, Ellie Patterson. We encourage all members to attend the Friday and Saturday night festivities. This is a wonderful way to meet other Rotarians from around the District and also support our member and past president, Ellie Patterson.
Success, we rolled up our sleeves and donated our blue Rotarian blood to the Red Cross. At the last meeting we donated 28 pints and three of those were actually Power Reds. We will help approximately 93 people through our hard work. Three people tried to donate and due to some hitch in their giddy up were unable. They said they will try next time.
I am extremely proud to be a Rotarian when we can beat our goal that was established for the blood drive. So many people asked me questions about donating and if they had some disease or visited a foreign country could they still donate and their questions were answered by the great staff we had in the room. Thank you all for your wonderful support.
