What is Mental Health First Aid?
Mental health issues affect all of society in some way, shape or form. In "normal" times, 1 in 5 Americans will experience a diagnosable mental disorder in any given year. In April 2020 the Kaiser Family Foundation reported that as a result of COVID, 50% of the people they surveyed report they have experienced a negative impact on their mental health. In this presentation, Kandy will talk about what Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is, what you can learn as a Mental Health First Aid-er, where MHFA came from & why it is so important in today’s world.

Kandy Hirsch ~ Biography

Kandy also facilitates two groups in Tucson for the Women Presidents' Organization, a premier Peer Advisory organization for women who own or run businesses with revenues of more than 1 million dollars.
Mystery Editor ~ 9/9/20
We started out the meeting with a lovely “America the Beautiful” video rendition that was performed by an orchestra that was connected via Zoom.

TAMARA CRIMANDO led the Pledge of Allegiance. An interesting tidbit is that she has three parrots at home. Who would have known….unless you checked Clubrunner.

MARK IRVIN introduced our speaker, Celestino Fernandez. MARK used three words to describe Celestino: focused, focused, focused. Celestino has been retired after 39 years at the University of Arizona studying/teaching Mexican Studies and Happiness.  We learned about Tucson International Mariachi Conference that was started in 1983….the Mother of all conferences. That’s because all other Mariachi conferences learn and use the Tucson Conference as a benchmark.  There are two types of traditional Mariachi. Son: Folklorico Dance and Cancion Rachera (Ranch music) and is always played standing up.

Dan Ranieri, CEO of La Frontera (organizer of the conference) spoke of the logistics for the conference. The Mariachi Conference will be coming back to downtown Tucson the first week of May, 2021.

Happy Birthday to BOB ERNSTEIN who’s sponsor was BILLY JOE VARNEY. BOB has been a member for 29 years and it was great to see him!

JOE DANISZEWSKI let us know that we have sold more Car Show tickets than we had by this time last year. That’s really important because we won’t have a show this year and need to sell tickets now! He reminded us that a great way to sell tickets is for your next favorite non-profit organization to do so and you’ll receive some credit.

JEANNE ZETAH let us know that we have over 125 items ready for bid at the online auction. She needs volunteers for the online auction. Please ask her how you can help.

CLIFF BOWMAN introduced and played a video created by Make Way for Books that reminded us all why we raise critical funds for both Make Way for Books and JTED.

PRESIDENT JENNIFER HOFFMAN closed with a toast and we were on our way.
Replacement/Social Mixer ~ 9/30/20 (ALL MUST REGISTER)
We will be holding a Replacement/Social Mixer the evening of September 30th.  This mixer will be held at Vero Amore (on the patio), 2920 N. Let's have some fun at our next social mixer on September 30th.  Please remember, there is NO LUNCH MEETING on September 30th.
Pima JTED Update
For the first time, two school districts are working together to create an innovative hub in Tucson.

The Tucson Unified School District and Pima County Joint Technical Education District have teamed up to create a new school on the south side.

The school will offer regular high school for about 400 students during the day with access to the enhanced programs listed below, a real fist in the nation, as well as offering these same programs for students who attend other high schools throughout the Pima County.

Programs include:
  • 3D Animation/Virtual Reality and Game Design
  • Automation/Robotics-Logistics, Optics, AI
  • Air Transportation-FAA Drone Operator
  • Business Start-Up/Entrepreneurship
  • Culinary and Nutritional Arts/Restaurant Management
  • Cybersecurity/Artificial Intelligence
  • Engineering – Aerospace and Mining Technology
  • Healthcare Foundations
  • License Nursing Assistant
  • Medical Assistant
JTED is a public high school district that provides free career and technical education to all sophomore, junior and senior level high school students in Pima County to give them a head start on college and technical careers.

The 50,000 square ft. Pima JTED Innovative Learning Center building is costing about 15 million dollars.  JTED took occupancy of the building a few weeks ago.  They expect students to begin in-person hybrid instruction next month, once the Pima County Health Department seems it safe to do so.  In the meantime, students have been engaging in online learning since August 10th.

#runningforrotary
My fellow Rotarians,

I have laced up my running shoes and started #runningforrotary. I usually run 12-18 miles per week or 48-72 miles per month. You can find a form on our website www.tucsonrotary.org, under the “Member Area” tab, top right corner of the home page, or request one from Dorinna or Kari. You can sponsor me mile for mile for a month, a few months or the entire year. Your donations will go to the area of your choice for our Rotary Club Foundation or even Rotary International. How far do you think I will go #runningforrotary this year?  I would like to thank those members who have already signed up and pledged a donation.

Thank you for your support,

President Jen
