WELCOME Rotarians announced PRESIDENT MARGARET HIGGINS this Wednesday’s meeting. PRESIDENT MARGARET rang the bell at 12p to officially get the meeting started then made the announcement to get some food from the buffet; we will have fellowship and lunch for about 15 minutes before the presentation from Dieter & Netzin Steklis from the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences at the University of Arizona.
After some great fellowship time and delicious food, PRESIDENT MARGARET HIGGINS started the meeting. We were led in the pledge and song by new member DARRELL BIRKHIMER. Today’s song was “My Country tis of Thee’ with some help from KHRIS DODGE on the keyboard.
After the pledge and song, PRESIDENT MARGARET HIGGINS then shared that member ALAN SCHROPE has been diagnosed with Sick Sinus Syndrome, we wish him a speedy recovery and cards are being passed around for all to sign.
The inspirational moment was given by CHRIS EDWARDS who spoke about leadership. Managing is tactical, leadership is strategic.

PRESIDENT MARGARET next called DIANA MADARAS to the podium to introduce our program for today with, Dieter & Neitzen Steklis; Professors from the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences at the University of Arizona. Dieter and Netzin will speak of their time in Rwanda working on gorilla conservation. When Dian Fossey was murdered in 1985, Deiter and Netzin were called upon to step in and take over the research and conservation work that Dian left behind. Another interesting fact is though Dian was murdered two years prior, her cabin was still the same, never cleaned up from the tragic event that had happened, both Deiter and Netzin cleaned out the cabin with heavy hearts and got right to work continuing Dian’s amazing work with the mountain gorillas for the next 13 years before they were forced to flee for their lives from Rebels. They now reside in Tucson and today we are going to hear about the behind-the-scenes human stories that you can’t read about in published research. Dieter and Netzin have great energy about them when they present together. They started at the Karisoke Camp which Dian built as a research camp or rather a research center. Dian Fossey discovered during her research that each gorilla has individuality. She figured out that each gorilla has a unique personality and even have their own ‘fingerprint’ as a nose print that she was able to identify each gorilla by. Gorillas are truly gentle giants and unless threatened, will not harm you though they are very curious. Unlike Chimpanzees that are very aggressive and volatile. If Dian did not do this conservation work, we may never have this research or knowledge of these amazing primates. Netzin began going through all of Dian’s notes and got to know Dian very well over the years. They continued to share personal stories of the time in Rwanda, their experiences with the gorillas and how not only poaching but growth can seriously affect the gorilla population. It was fascinating to hear about all the work that Dian started but Dieter and Netzin continued for a total of 55 years.
After Dieter and Netzin’s presentation the book “Good Night Gorilla” was signed by both Dieter and Netzin for our Make Way for Books Library as we continue to support children’s literacy in Tucson.
There were two Rotary Birthdays again this week. Happy birthday to: HUGH THOMPSON, 8/13, and PHIL GUTT, 8/27. A very happy birthday to both of you!

JEANNE ZETAH gave a car show update on the current fundraising and ticket selling efforts, gave thanks to all the members who have been selling Car Show Tickets at events and to all members who are keeping up the great work of getting out there and selling tickets.
PRESIDENT MARGARET HIGGINS closed by thanking all our members, guests, and virtual attendees for being here today. CHRIS EDWARDS gave the final toast before PRESIDENT MARGARET HIGGINS rang the bell to adjourn the meeting.
At the time of this message, we have six (6) confirmed hikers so will be looking at two (2) vehicles for down and back. The extended forecast is looking very good with a limited chance of afternoon storms and temperatures in the 50's to start and upper 60's to 70 degrees upon completion.
As this is going to be an all-day affair, be sure to bring something to eat on the drive-down, as we will have a little over an hour's drive time. Also, humidity is projected to be fairly high so be sure to bring plenty of water (I will have around 6 liters), cooling towels, sunscreen, lunch on the mountain, first aid/medications, electrolytes/energy snacks and a rain poncho is always a good idea. Meeting time will be 5:45AM for 6AM departure at El Con Mall. This will have us on the trail by 7:30AM so anticipated completion will be mid afternoon. We will meet on the Southwest side of the parking lot in front of the Starbuck's for visibility of parked vehicles and what is a good flow of traffic.
Last items are that we can certainly accommodate more hikers so anyone up for just over 10 miles and 4,000 vertical feet, please RSVP to assure sufficient transportation. Although a challenging hike it will be a lovely day with spectacular views and, even better, great camaraderie. Here is the hike detail once again, for your review and I look forward to seeing you on the trails on Saturday!
For any members that would like to join me I plan to tour the new Gem & Mineral Museum in the recently renovated historic Pima County Courthouse located at 115 N Church. If you have never been it is a world class gem museum. Feel free to tour the website to see if you are interested in attending.
Parking is available in the underground parking facility at 165 W Alameda and the elevator takes you up to Presidio Park which is on the back side of the courthouse. Tickets are $15 ($10 for Seniors.) Plan to meet in the courtyard of the courthouse at 11:30.
For those that have the time to join me for lunch after we can head over to Cafe a la C'art, which is a hidden gem in Tucson if you have never been. It is about a block from the courthouse located at 150 N Main.

How do I Get Credit for Selling Car Show Tickets? – Let Me Count the Ways
Our 2023 Car Show ticket goal is 32,000 tickets .. We’ve sold 5149 tickets so far which is only 16% of goal.
We’ve got 8 weeks until the Car Show, but only 5 meetings left to bring in the money or unsold tickets. (Deadline: Oct. 18) If you can’t get to a meeting, drop off your money envelopes at the office.
Ads are on TV and on the radio and in the papers. Ask your contacts to buy tickets.
You can buy and/or sell Classics Club tickets ($65) which get people into the VIP tent which includes lunch and a VIP parking pass and a special prize drawing.
You can use the email template to send requests to people and you’ll get credited if they buy. Ask Jeanne Zetah if you’d like to know who credited you last year or if you need help with this.
You can comment on or share Facebook posts on the TucsonClassicsCarShow Facebook page or create your own post on Facebook or other social media, asking them to credit you.
You can ask another Rotary Club or nonprofit to be a ticket-selling partner and they’ll do the selling and you get part of the credit. Check with Roger Harwell if the group has been asked already and to get the agreement they’ll need to sign.
You can sell tickets at an event in Oct. See Dave White’s July 18th email for links to sign up for SAHBA Fall Show (Oct. 6-8) or Tucson Meet Yourself (Oct. 13-15).
You can make a donation or ask for donations if people don’t want tickets.
You can buy your tickets (check, cash, or charge online) and give away to family and friends or let us know if you want them donated to Davis-Monthan personnel.
Give the Car Show business cards (with your name on the back) to those who might buy but want to charge tickets.

The Assistant Governor (AG) is the connection and liaison between the clubs and the District. Additionally, they are advocates for clubs and club members. AGs visit clubs at least quarterly and may participate in club projects and activities. Ideally they make opportunities to get to know the members and club culture as best as they can to provide support and encouragement.
The Rotary Club of Tucson is in Region 8 (there are 14 Regions in District 5500), which includes the following clubs: Rincon Rotary Club of Tucson, Catalina Rotary Club, Pantano Rotary Club of Tucson, and the UA Rotaract Club. The Region 8 Assistant Governor this year is Ann Huber, recent past president of the Tucson Sunset Rotary Club, and the Region 8 AG from 2016-2019. She has been a Rotarian for 20 years and is looking forward to becoming reacquainted with RCOT friends and making new ones. All of us have seen the awful destruction of the disastrous fires in Maui. Many Rotarians of District 5000 (Hawaii) are directly impacted. There are nine Rotary clubs on Maui and it has been reported that the homes of two Club Presidents have been destroyed. Many of you have already reached out and asked how we can help.
Early in a disaster, often the most effective way to help is a contribution of cash to a trustworthy and reliable organization. The District 5000 Foundation has established a Maui Relief Fund. Below I have shared an appeal that District Governor Mark Merriam sent to all the Rotary members in District 5000. It includes a donation link to make contributions to the Maui Relief Fund. If you wish, this is an opportunity to help our fellow Rotary members in Maui and their neighbors. Thank you.
