Become a Dementia Friend
The impact of Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia can be overwhelming, but no one needs to go through this journey alone. Learn about the variety of free programs, services, and resources available to help you cope with all aspects of the disease and its progression.

In affiliation with the National Alzheimer's Association, the Desert Southwest Chapter is part of the world's leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer's care, support and research.
Mystery Editor ~ 6/13/18
KATHY KITAGAWA gave a thoughtful invocation followed by KURTIS DAWSON who led us in the pledge and song, accompanied by GARY HIRSCH on the piano – a rousing rendition of “God Bless America”.

Past President and two-time Car Show Chairman JON WANG introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians. Past President JON also took a moment to remember the inestimable STUB ASHCRAFT whose birthday always coincided with Flag Day.

We had three birthday Rotarians this week:

PETER BEAHAN urged new members to get involved in as many Rotary activities and committees to get to know the Rotary Club of Tucson.
GARY HIRSCH pointed out the continued persistence of polio and ability of Rotary to help us think of something other than ourselves, in an atmosphere of peace and calm.
JOHN STROBECK spoke about how he’s had a loyal friend who calls without fail on his birthday (his twin brother!)

We also had the introduction of two new members:

JO DECHATELET introduced LYUDA EISENMAN who emigrated from Russia in 1999, graduated Magna Cum Laude from the U of A, and who serves as Treasurer for the Children’s Museum among other worthy causes.

DIANA CANNON introduced BRUCE ELLWEIN who joins us from the Rincon Rotary Club. BRUCE graduated from the Air Force Academy, has a Masters in Aeronautical Science, and enjoys golf and gardening.
Welcome LYUDA and BRUCE

Past President CHARLOTTE HARRIS made a Major Donor Presentation to JOE and Mikey PENNINGTON. JOE and Mikey support the Rotary Foundation because it advances understanding, goodwill, and peace throughout the world. Thank you JOE and Mikey!

Sergeant at Arms FONDA INSLEY conducted the raffle and led us through the announcements efficiently as always:

President Elect CHUCK announced we will be dark on 6/27 & 7/4 (No need forMake ups)
JOHN LEWIS urged us all to sign up for the Change of Administration Party on Sat. 7/7/18 at La Mariposa (and then asked FONDA what she was thinking in agreeing to become head of the Social Committee…)
DON ROLLINGS gave a Blue Badge to MICHAEL DEEHAN. MICHAEL was a former Rotary Scholar to Denmark, and offered us a thousand thanks (“tusind tak” in Danish).
Past President JIM LUBINSKI announced our newest special project: a Centennial Celebration of our Rotary Club in 2021. The Centennial Project will be an extension of the Car Show and will benefit our new major recipient in 2021. JIM is looking for volunteers for the committee.

JEFF RONSTADT thanked ELLEN WHEELER for her continuous help on the Programs Committee.

JEFF then introduced our own KURTIS DAWSON, President and CEO of the YMCA of Southern Arizona. KURTIS recounted the long history of the YMCA (including the invention of Father’s Day) and then described the many programs that the YMCA brings to Tucson. These programs include the Triangle Y Camp, preschool readiness programs, programs to ensure reading at third grade level by the time they enter that grade, Camp Corral and the Military Ball. The YMCA does much to improve the lives of children, military service people, and residents throughout Southern Arizona.  KURTIS signed a book for our lending library: “On A Magical Do-Nothing Day”

President Elect CHUCK closed the meeting with a quote and best wishes.
