Rio Nuevo Is On A Roll!
The program will be a presentation on Rio Nuevo's accomplishments and what to look forward to.

Biography - Fletcher McCusker

Fletcher McCusker is the current CEO and founder of Sinfonia HealthCare Corp., a new medical home health care business.  Sinfonía is based out of an old warehouse in downtown Tucson, Arizona, and will focus on the rapidly expanding home health industry driven by the changes in the Health Care Affordability Act. A native Tucsonan and a graduate of the University of Arizona, he attended graduate school at Arizona State University after being turned down by the UofA. He has returned much to the community; serving on the boards of the Eller School and the Social and Behavioral Sciences College, the YMCA, St. Gregory School, The Metro Chamber, TREO and participates in numerous charitable causes.  Fletcher has been very active in downtown revitalization.  He resigned these boards to serve as the Chairman of the Rio Nuevo board after being appointed by state legislature.

He is co-founder of 2NDSaturdays Downtown which has just celebrated six years running this last May 2016. An entrepreneur and a contrarian, Fletcher has a knack for being in the right place at the right time, which he attributes to creating opportunities for luck to happen and surrounding himself with smart people. A pilot, a Harley rider, an avid skier, a father, husband and a great friend of Tucson.

Wow, what a turnout!  A full house for PRESIDENT ELLIE and Peter Smith (17 guests).  Great job Rotary Club of Tucson!  ELLIE congratulated DOT KRET and DK Advocates for their Copper Cactus Award … and a big welcome back to TOM ANDREWS – we really love and missed you TOM.

MIKE ORCUTT gave the Inspiration and GARY HIRSCH played the keys for the pledge and song led by NANCY PURDIN – travel agent extraordinaire.  Our beloved JACK MAREK was NANCY’S sponsor.  It was also NANCY’S birthday along with BOB ERNSTEIN who celebrated his birthday too!  We love BOB’S wife, CHAR ERNSTEIN, an honorary member of our club.

CINDY GODWIN recognized our key car show sponsor this week, La Posada/JONI CONDIT (former President).  JONI will give her tickets to the Green Valley and Golden Mine fire districts – thank you JONI!  CINDY also gave a car show minute for GAP Ministries – GAP helps over 300 children per year!  RICHARD MUNDINGER wants more good stuff for our Friday Night Car Show Auction.  JON WANG sold more of his hi-tech car show shirts and he spoke about his Grand Canyon white water adventure … He was also sporting his famous Princeton Tiger black and orange scarf.

Our program was introduced by JOE PENNINGTON and presented by the World Famous Peter Smith – A Tucson High graduate.  Peter spoke about the Osiris-REx project.  The scientists recently launched a rocket with a robot and camera.  This mission will take two years to get to the asteroid belt which is held in gravitational pull by Jupiter – wow!  The robot will then take pictures and grab four pounds – 2 to 3 handfuls of asteroid material.  The materials will then be rocketed back to Utah – two more years to get back here!  The project will eventually bring 120 scientists and $190 million to Tucson.  Fantastic!

Our meeting was toasted by PRESIDENT ELLIE.  And, a great meeting it was!

President's Reflections

When I look at the beautiful face of my granddaughter, Ashlynne, I see curiosity, enthusiasm and optimism. When I cuddle and read with her I feel her joy when she listens to me and when she enters in and reads along with me. When Ashlynne goes off to pre-school each day she continues to have access to education and literacy by caring teachers. When I think about children everywhere, I think, this should be how it is with every child. Sadly this is not so. Did you know that sixty-seven million children worldwide have no access to education and more than 750 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate? Did you know that only 13% of children in Arizona entering kindergarten meet benchmark early literacy skills?

F.D.R. said "we may not be able to prepare the future for our children but we can at least prepare our children for the future."

September is designated as Rotary's focus on Basic Education and Literacy month. The RI goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. Tucson Rotary is certainly strengthening the capacity of communities in supporting education through funding that is generated from our annual and spectacular Tucson Classics Car Show. This year marks our tenth anniversary and with less than a month away our tactical and strategic leadership teams are meeting constantly to hammer out all the logistics of this complex operation. Many devoted members continue to work hard in the areas of sales and marketing activities, traffic and parking details, facilities’ maintenance, Friday night auction execution, vendor and booth coordination, goodie bag item collection, car registration, and finding ways to increase member ticket sales. The overall operations and administration require laser-like focus of our members for this major event.  Phew!  Our primary beneficiary this year is Make Way For Books, an organization that is committed to "Building a Literacy-Rich Environment" for children and families. Our Club is indeed fighting illiteracy and promoting education by giving 40% of proceeds from the Tucson Classics Car Show to Make Way For Books. In this way, too, we are helping to make a change in the benchmark early literacy skills statistic for Arizona. But then our Tucson Rotary Club has been doing that since almost Day One-promoting literacy in our community and putting books in the hands of children.  My desire for Ashlynne is that she will grow up to be a warrior for education and literacy just as we Rotarians are.  I know this for sure-she’ll love the Tucson Classics Car Show when she goes for the first time on that warm, sunny Saturday in October, October 15 to be exact, less than 4 weeks away.
