Stories
From the Earth to the Moon, via Tucson
Beginning with the first photographic atlases of the Moon, just as the Space Age dawned, Tucson in general, and the University of Arizona in particular, played key roles in the race to put humans on the Moon. He will discuss a few of the stories from that era, whose climax was the landing of Apollo 11 - 50 years ago.

Biography ~ Tim Swindle

Tim Swindle is a Professor of Planetary Sciences and Geosciences, Head of the Department of Planetary Sciences, and Director of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL) at the University of Arizona. In his personal research, Professor Swindle has been studying the timing of events throughout the history of the solar system using extraterrestrial materials – meteorites and samples returned by the Apollo astronauts – since the time he was a graduate student at Washington University in St. Louis, where he received his PhD. He is currently a Collaborator on the OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return mission, which LPL is leading, and asteroid 8690 is named “Swindle” in his honor. He is also one of the hosts of “Arizona Science”, which appears on KUAZ-FM every Friday.
Mystery Editor ~ 8/14/19
Following a buffet lunch, fellowship and call to order by President BOB LOGAN, MARCIA KRUMWIEDE led us in the pledge and God Bless America with GARY HIRSCH on the piano.  A moment of silence was offered for beloved former members BILL BENNETT and KEN FLOWER.

An inspirational video shared the special relationship between students and their teachers and how one teacher provided the needed kidney for a student’s mother who shared the same rare blood type.  Scholarship Cup reminder of $4 /week or $52/quarter was announced by President BOB.  SCOTT VAUGHAN introduced guests and visitors.

A local TV newscaster, on video, introduced our program of Ted Maxwell, President/CEO of Southern Arizona Leadership Council (SALC) with his opening comment that he likes speaking to Rotary as he knows everyone in the room cares.  (SALC brings businesses together to enhance the economic and quality of life in our community through engagement, collaboration and advocacy.)

Happy Birthdays were celebrated by JIM WOOD, SHARYN FELTON (who had JIM WOOD as a student at Gridley Middle School), and Past President, PHIL GUTT!

TED FORSBERG introduced new member BOB OHLFEST.  Welcome to the Club, Bob!

DARRELL STEWART, Sergeant At Arms, in military garb promised to get the job done with “both arms tied behind his back”! President BOB reminded us of the generous offer for members and one guest to have free admission to the Biosphere2 until January 31, 2020.  BRUCE JACOBS announced the August 28th replacement meeting will be a social mixer at Top Golf.  Guest fee is $30 and no golf clubs are needed.  STEVE PICKERING shared how we can obtain our Classics Club Car Show Tickets to sell.

President BOB announced next week’s program, Tim Swindle, Director of the UofA Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.  He closed the meeting with a quote, “Someone once told me, ‘not to bite off more than I can chew’.  And I said, ‘I’d rather choke on greatness than nibble on mediocrity’.”

Member Support Committee
We would appreciate your help in identifying Club members who are in some sort of struggle mode.  This committee would like to check in with that member to see if there is any way we could be of help.  Many don't want help under these types of circumstances but a phone call frequently is reassuring.  Please contact Frank, Hugh or Dorinna (520-623-2281) with any news of a member in trouble.

Thank you,

Co-chairs:  Frank Dahl (907-529-4477) and Hugh Thompson (520-299-4930)
Paul Harris Pins
Have you lost or misplaced your latest Paul Harris pin?  We have some and thought if you needed a new one, at your current level of giving, we would see if we have one that you need.  If you are interested, please contact Charlotte (charharris@aol.com) and she will see if she has an extra on hand that you can have.
Biosphere 2 ~ Free Admission
At our July 31st Rotary meeting, our speaker, John Adams – Deputy Director of Biosphere 2, offered free admission for each Rotary member and one guest until the deadline of January 31, 2020.  To obtain your two free admission tickets, go to the ticket desk and state you are from the Rotary Club of Tucson.  They will have tickets ready for you.
