The athletics arena provides a venue that becomes a classroom for principles of living, struggling, growing, and succeeding. Lessons learned on fields and courts translate effectively into guidelines for living fully and living well.

 

Conversely, the athlete who has established a solid base of values in living, is better suited to meet and overcome the challenges of sport, and in addition, be better prepared to accept rewards that may come without losing their sense of where and who they are.

 

The result can be a dynamic synergism that greatly enhances a college athlete’s overall development.

 

 

Our Rotary meeting was opened by the esteemed PRESIDENT ELLIE.  Madam President spoke about the constant Rotary theme of “Care” to all of humanity.  DREW VACTOR’S mom passed away at the age of 91.  Another member of the “Greatest Generation” has left the planet.  Our thoughts are with you DREW.

 

The Inspiration was given by BUZZ DEMPSEY, a senior loan office with VIP Mortgage.  And, GARY HIRSCH played “America The Beautiful” for CLINT MABIE, hey CLINT, Pledge is first, the Song is second…

 

JEFF RONSTADT introduced many out of town visiting Rotarians and in town guests.  Jersey boy, ROBERT O’BRIEN was our Birthday Boy.  Thank you ROBERT, you do a great job selling car show tickets.  And, thank you from all of us in the Club for your service in the Marine Corps.

 

PE CLIFF BOWMAN, A-10 Pilot Instructor par excellence, introduced new member LIZ BAKER.  LIZ worked for the Jane Goodall Foundation, gorillas, and has been a scientist since the age of 3.  Welcome LIZ!

 

Under Announcements were:

Our SAA FONDA INSLEY raffled off, Harlow Gardens, Sullivans Eatery, Archive Advantage, and Wilbur and Wilma Wildcats.

 

ROBYN FREY, president of Bolchalk Frey Marketing, introduced the program, 390^th Memorial Museum at the Pima Air Museum.  Wally Scales presented a moving history of the 390^th bomb group.  He spoke of this group of 17, 18, 19, 20 & 21 year old men and their missions to fly the B-17 Flying Fortress in the European WWII campaign.  Flying at over 10,000 feet these men had no cabin pressure, no heat, and suffered from frostbite and cold resulting in death, the temperature up there was 30 degrees below zero.  There were 9-10 men per plane.  The numbers were: 301 missions, 670 men killed in action, 730 prisoners of war (POWs) and 176 aircraft lost – over 76%!  This greatest generation of men will never be duplicated in their courage, and dedication to the cause of winning freedom for all of us.

 

Our meeting was closed with a toast for our Veterans by PRESIDENT ELLIE.

Clint Mabie joined our Tucson Rotary club this past October, 2016, and was sponsored by Hugh Thompson. He was born in the Chicago area. Clint has volunteered his entire professional career and in 1992 decided to make his passion for helping others his professional vocation by becoming the Development Director of Golden Apple Foundation. From there he founded a not-for-profit consulting company and created the Chicago Public School’s Children First Fund, an $11 million foundation. He was co-founder of the largest not-for-profit educational technology training organization in Illinois and devoted the next three years in its growth and development.   Clint then became the key executive at the Chicago Community Trust for seven years working first in Development and then as the Executive Director of its Poverty Initiative.

 

Clint is currently the President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona and moved here in 2010 to accept this position.  How did Clint develop his passion for volunteer work? Look no further than his parents. Clint had great role models in his parents that led by example. His mom founded the first hospice in Chicago and his dad was on the boards of multiple nonprofits. Diversity and inclusion has been emphasized during his entire career history and he is proud to be involved in many initiatives that have involved diverse communities in funneling more resources to them. Clint says his true joy in his career is working with and getting to know donors and that they all have a story; it is his daily honor to work with donors to share their stories with the community by giving back. Clint’s other true joy is playing with his three children and getting in a golf game or two when his schedule permits. Please introduce yourself to Clint if you haven’t met him yet. We’re so glad he’s part of the club!

 

New Work Project for Rotary Club of Tucson,

 

This project will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at "Make Way For Books"  from 8:00 am to 10:00 am, 700 N. Stone Ave., Tucson, AZ 85705 — (520) 398-6451.  We need about 8-10 people to volunteer to do a deep clean, inside and out of MWFB's building.  We would be cleaning windows, window sills, weeding, dusting, etc.  So if you want to start your morning off feeling good about yourself and Rotary please join me, Mike Orcutt and Dave Gallaher (Co projects committee dudes) for a good time.  Let's Clean and Weed and FEEL GOOD!

In business there are very few “new” problems—only those that are unfamiliar to you. Wouldn’t it be great if you had a group of fellow business owners that could share their experiences, help you solve the most vexing business problems, and generally support you in the growth of your business?  We are pleased to announce the formation of the Rotary Club of Tucson Business Roundtable.  The Roundtable will be led by Gary Hirsch, who for a decade formed and led three Tucson CEO Roundtables for Vistage International, the world’s leader in Peer Advisory Groups with 20,000 members worldwide. Please note that this is not another networking group. In monthly meetings the Roundtable will focus exclusively on topics that contribute directly to the growth and stability of members’ businesses.

 

 

 

 

 

Our club does a lot of great work, and at times polio seems so “far away.” Please remember that even after the last case is reported, there is work to be done for 3 full years that will require continued support from Rotary. So lets continue to keep our commitment to End Polio Now front and center.
