Stories
A for Arizona
(This lunch meeting will be in the Casa Luna Room indoors and the speaker will be presenting by Zoom)

Biography ~ Emily Anne Gullickson

Emily Anne is the Founder and CEO of A for Arizona, bringing a unique background of executive, advocacy, legal, and teaching experience to the organization.

Prior to launching A for Arizona as a standalone 501(c)(3), Emily Anne served as the Chief Executive Officer at the Arizona Chamber Foundation and Executive Director of the A for Arizona initiative. Emily Anne played a leading role in growing the two-person research shop into a thriving foundation with three major initiatives including A for Arizona, Chamber Business News, and the Arizona Industry Fellows. Under her direction, the Foundation published critical policy briefs and research on topics dedicated to expanding economic opportunity in Arizona such as K-12 education reform, water and the Drought Contingency Plan, and trade with a focus on the USMCA and its impact on Arizona. At A for Arizona, Emily Anne designed, implemented, and facilitated first-of-their-kind initiatives and solutions to rapidly increase the number of low-income students attending Arizona’s top-performing public schools.

Emily Anne was recently recognized by the Arizona Capitol Times as an Inaugural Women Achievers of Arizona – Nonprofit Leader and 2019 Breakdown Breakout, recognition for being one of the sharpest political minds in Arizona under 40. She was identified in 2018 by The Arizona Republic as an educator to watch that’s shaping Arizona’s next generation and was a Greater Phoenix Chamber 2017 ATHENA Young Professional Award Nominee.

Using her experience as an educator, legal advocate, and policy leader, Emily Anne is devoted to changing the narrative of what’s possible for students in Arizona and the nation. She currently serves as an Executive Board Member and Vice President of Membership Initiatives for the Grand Canyon Council Boy Scouts of America and on the Auxiliary Board for notMYkid. She actively serves on the Policy Innovators in Education (PIE) Network Leadership Council and is the only representative from Arizona in PIE’s current national Leadership Institute cohort. Emily Anne is also an inaugural fellow in R Street Institute’s Foundations of Conservative Policymaking Fellowship and was a member of the Fall 2018 American Enterprise Institute Leadership Institute.

Bike Ride on the Loop ~ 2/20/21
Bike ride on the Loop, Saturday, February 20, 2021, 8:30am.

Please join your fellow Rotarians and me for a relaxing bike ride on the Loop on Saturday, February 20th.  This is a great opportunity to bring a potential member. We will meet in the parking lot of the Rillito Racetrack, SW corner of the main parking lot at 8:30am.  Please wear a mask and bring water. We can easily socially distance in the parking lot and on the ride. They just repaved the racetrack parking lot, so we have more than an acre of paved space.  (IF it's below 50 degrees or raining, we will postpone.) Please email me so I know who is joining us and if there are issues, I can easily email you.  Lee Olitzky at  Lee@Wit2tucson.com

Rotary Peace Fellowships: The Role of Rotarians

Each year, Rotary awards up to 130 fully funded fellowships for dedicated leaders from around the world to study at one of our peace centers.

Through academic training, practice, and global networking opportunities, the Rotary Peace Centers program develops the capacity of peace and development professionals or practitioners to become experienced and effective catalysts for peace. The fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and all internship and field-study expenses.

Since the program began in 2002, the Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 1,400 fellows who now work in more than 115 countries. Many serve as leaders in governments, NGOs, the military, education, law enforcement, and international organizations like the United Nations and the World Bank.

Our fellowships

The Rotary Peace Fellowship is designed for leaders with work experience in peace and development. Our fellows are committed to community and international service and the pursuit of peace. Each year, The Rotary Foundation awards up to 50 fellowships for master’s degrees and 80 for certificate studies at premier universities.

Polio Update
Polio Update:
Regarding the final two Polio Endemic Countries:  Pakistan has had no new wild polio cases reported in 2021 with the most recent case having an onset of paralysis on 11/23/2020.  Pakistan had a total of 84 Wild Polio cases reported in 2020.  Afghanistan has had one new case in 2021 with the most recent case having an onset on 1/19/2021.  Afghanistan had a total of 56 Wild Polio cases reported in 2020.

The biggest news is that Rotary and our Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners are working to deploy a new polio vaccine – novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) – to better assist the countries fighting circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus outbreaks. We look forward to more information on this innovative new tool when it is deployed in the very near future.  A total of 1,007 Vaccine Derived Polio cases were reported in 2020.
