Chad Herzog joined Arizona Arts and the University of Arizona as Executive and Artistic Director of Arizona Arts Live (then UA Presents) in August 2019 and became Associate Vice President of Arizona Arts in August 2021. At Arizona Arts Live, Chad oversees all aspects of the organization, from strategy to engagement, including providing creative vision and curating programming for the annual season of experiences both on and off campus for the extended University community. Previously, Chad served as Artistic Director and Co-Director for the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven, CT, and as Director of the Performing Arts and curator of the College’s performance series at Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA.

President MARGARET HIGGINS called the meeting to order at 12 noon from the Tucson Convention Center’s Turquoise and Crystal Ballrooms. A delicious buffet started the meeting with a large selection of items to please even a stubborn eater. The Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag was led by CHRIS KIM from the Salvation Army followed by the reciting of “The Four Way Test” of Rotary instead of singing one of the patriotic tunes of America.

 

President HIGGINS kicked off the formal part of the meeting by introducing DAN KALM who inspired us all with his BEE inspirational thoughts through a brief introduction of his new hobby of honey collection. DAN followed his honey thoughts with the introduction of guests.

 

BRITTANY BATTLE, who certainly did not want to be upstaged by a bunch of bees, gave a lively introduction to today’s program which was certainly near and dear to her heart regarding the topic of Generation Z, the “New Movers and Shakers.”  Patrick Robles, Arizona State Governor’s office liaison for Business and Community Relations, gave a rousing discussion about this new generation of leaders, he, himself being only 22 years old and works as a part of the Governor’s new staff. Patrick signed the Make Way For Books Library book entitled appropriately, “The Crayons Go Back to School.”  You will certainly want to tune into the Rotary Club of Tucson’s YouTube channel to hear Patrick’s presentation. 

 

Today’s Birthdays included DIANA CANNON (7/13) and KATIE DUSENBERRY (7/30).  KATIE is celebrating her 99th birthday and was the first woman president of the Club.  CHAR HARRIS and NINA TRASOFF gave an informative tribute to KATIE’S many accomplishments in her life.  KATIE is now an Honorary Member of our club.  Happy birthday to these fine ladies.

 

CHAR HARRIS presented the newest PAUL HARRIS recipient honoring SEAN HOFFMAN.  Congratulations to SEAN.

 

And finally, being especially humbled, CHRIS KIM received his Blue Badge. Congratulations to CHRIS!

 

With no one winning the big raffle pot at the Drawing by Sargeant of Arms, DAN KALM, President MARGARET quickly went into the announcement part of the meeting since the meeting was running a little long.

Good morning fellow hiking enthusiasts,

 

Your votes have been cast, they have been tabulated, multiple recounts have been completed and all lawsuits questioning the results have been dismissed.  

It is my pleasure to announce that, as mandated by the Rotary Club of Tucson Hiking Fellowship, we will be hiking the Butterfly Trail, Point-to-Point next Saturday, August 5th!

 

The extended forecast is projecting a hot day for Mount Lemmon standards with our morning low being in the lower 60's next weekend and the afternoon high is projected in the upper 80's.  Getting an early start will be a great idea and, as this is a point-to-point hike, we will need to drop vehicles at each trailhead.  We will meet and depart our favorite spot, LeBuzz in the mall at Catalina Highway and Tanque Verde.  The hike will start at the trailhead across General Hitchcock Highway from the Palisades Visitor Center and will conclude at Soldier Camp.  The hike is 5.5 miles and categorized as difficult so hiking time will be 4-5 hours.

 

The vote to determine if lunch/beverages will be at Sawmill or Iron Door will take place during the trek. 🙂  I look forward to seeing you on the trails!

Kanon Nakamura, our exchange student from Japan, arrived at the Tucson Airport at 4:30 on July 25 with temps around 105. Her welcome committee included her host dad and brother, Jim and Noah Bushnell; club members Jen Hoffman, Thomas Robertson and Jeanne Zetah; and D5500 youth exchange chair Cindy Dooling and her husband John.

 

Kanon will attend Ironwood Ridge High School in Oro Valley as a sophomore and has special interests in arts and sciences, plus learning about our culture and sharing hers. She’ll be introduced at our meeting on Wed., Aug. 2. Please let Jeanne know if there’s some special activity in Tucson you’d like to share with Kanon during her exchange year.
