Golf on Tour - September 23rd
Don Pooley is one of Arizona’s most accomplished professional golfers, with a career spanning more than 40 years on the PGA Tour and PGA TOUR Champions. A Phoenix native who grew up in Riverside, California, Don came to the University of Arizona in 1969, where he played four years of collegiate golf and earned a business degree in 1973. After turning professional, Don earned his PGA Tour card in 1976 and went on to record 13 professional victories, highlighted by wins at the 1987 Memorial Tournament and the 2002 U.S. Senior Open. In 1987, he also made a million-dollar hole-in-one at the Bay Hill Classic. He captured the 1985 Vardon Trophy, led the PGA Tour in putting statistics twice, and recorded 130 top-10 finishes. Don and his wife, Margaret, met at the University of Arizona and have called Tucson home for more than 50 years. They have two daughters, four grandchildren, and Don is a proud member of both the University of Arizona Hall of Fame and the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame.

PRESIDENT BOBBY LARSON rang the bell and led the Pledge and a heartfelt "America the Beautiful" himself this week, with KHRIS DODGE bringing his usual piano flair. He then shared word that GERRY HALLOWELL's Celebration of Life will be held September 20th at the Botanical Gardens. JONATHAN WALKUP delivered a moving Inspirational Moment, and SAA DRE WILLIAMS welcomed our guests before drawing LISA STANTON’S raffle ticket yay! But the big pot will accumulate for another week.

BOBBY crowned this week's COOKIE MONSTERS, BILL and JOHN HARLOW of Harlow Gardens. Announcements ran the gamut: the Family Fun Club is recruiting more members, DOT KRET shared news of a sweet addition — one named after her son Nathan — and BOBBY reminded everyone about the Replacement/Social Mixer at Trident II on 9/30 - all must register on the website and the new pocket-sized club directory, courtesy of MIKE ANDERSON, thanks MIKE!

The program spotlight belonged to MARI DEVRIES ROSS, Chair of the Grants Committee, who introduced this year's potential charity partners: Sister José Women's Center, Parent Aid, the Tucson Family Food Project, and Literacy Connects. WOW, what amazing organizations, this is a tough decision! MARI also signed the children's book "Kindness Makes Us Strong" for the Make Way for Books library.

Birthday cheers rang out for SALLY MONTAGNE, WAYNE WOOD, BOB ERNSTEIN, and JOSE GUERRA. BOBBY reviewed how the Service Project hours sheet works and monthly prize raffle! PDG Don Jorgensen celebrated 250 brand-new pairs of shoes collected for the Shoe Project, and MARI  announced the winners of our two secondary beneficiaries: Tucson Family Food Project and Literacy Connects!  Congratulations to the winners.

BOBBY thanked MARI, and the Grants Committee for their amazing work, along with our featured charities, then reminded everyone to donate to our UA and Pima CC Scholars. JONATHAN closed the meeting with the toast — don't miss former pro golfer Don Pooley next week!

Voting Results For The TCCS Secondary Beneficiaries

This past Wednesday, the Grants Committee invited four finalists to speak to the members at our luncheon.  After listening to some fabulous presentations, the members got a chance to vote online for their top 2.   Once the voting was tabulated, including those who voted before the meeting, the Foundation Board voted to accept the results.   I am thrilled to announce the two Secondary Beneficiaries who, along with Youth On Their Own, will receive the proceeds of both the 2027 and 2028 car shows:

I want to personally thank the Grants Committee members for their great efforts reviewing all the proposals, visiting candidate entities and making that crazy meeting look so easy! I hope you will join me in congratulating them on a job well done!!

Tucson Family Food Project - October 2nd

When a Nourishing Meal Isn’t Guaranteed

For many children, coming home means asking, “What’s for dinner?” For others, coming home to a complete, nourishing meal is a daily challenge.

Fellow Rotarians,

This October, I’m inviting my fellow Rotary of Tucson members to join me in supporting the Family Food Project—a project that helps children who may not have consistent access to a fully nourishing meal at home.  For some of these children, the challenge goes beyond feeding themselves. They may have younger brothers and sisters at home who are hungry, too.

The Family Food Project takes a unique approach. Instead of simply providing a prepared meal, children receive the ingredients and guidance to prepare a simple, nourishing meal for themselves and their siblings.  They aren’t just receiving food. They’re learning how to turn ingredients into a meal. We Pack. They Cook. Families Are Fed. That’s where we, as Rotarians, can help.  Our volunteers will come together to portion, organize, and pack the ingredients that go into these meal kits. The children can then take those ingredients home and prepare a complete meal.  A few hours of our time can help put the right ingredients into the hands of a child who otherwise may not know what dinner will look like that evening.  And while the immediate goal is nourishment, the impact reaches further.  Each meal gives a child an opportunity to develop confidence, independence, and a practical skill they can use again and again.

Rotary’s Vision in Action

Rotary’s vision calls us to come together, take action, and create lasting change in our communities.  This is a simple way for us to live that vision.

We can help address an immediate challenge—children coming home without reliable access to a nourishing meal—while empowering them with skills that can make a difference beyond a single evening.  Join Me This October Our first Rotary volunteer day will be:

Friday, October 2, 2026
9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

After our October kickoff, we will continue volunteering the first Friday of every month from 9:00–11:00 AM.

Come once or make it a monthly commitment. Bring another Rotarian, a colleague, or a friend who believes in serving our Tucson community.  Two hours may not feel like much. But somewhere in Tucson, a child will open a meal kit, pull out the ingredients, and prepare a nourishing meal for themselves—and maybe for a little brother or sister sitting beside them.

We pack the ingredients. They make the meal. Together, we help make sure more children come home to something nourishing. Two hours of service. One meal at a time. One stronger community.  RSVP with Elena Ha at 520-235-6553.
