Jerry Harris will talk about the research behind writing “High Meadow Ranch”.
Jerry Harris grew up on a farm in Yazoo County, Mississippi and owned horses before he was school age. His father's farm was divided into a cattle operation and a crop raising operation. Jerry graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi with a BA in English. While at Millsaps, he wrote short stories under the tutelage of Pulitzer Prize winner, Eudora Welty, Writer in Residence. After graduating from the University of Mississippi Law School, Jerry moved to Memphis, Tennessee. In March of 1974, Jerry became a prosecutor with the Shelby County, Tennessee Attorney General's Office. He worked as an active trial attorney until 2004 at which time he retired. He was head of the Major Violators Unit, Chief Homicide Prosecutor, and Legal Advisor to the Homicide Bureau of the Memphis Police Department.
During the period from 1976 to 1990, Jerry trained, showed, and judged Quarter Horses and Tennessee Walkers in amateur shows in the Mid South. Jerry moved to Tucson in 2007. His youngest daughter is on the faculty of the University of Virginia. His oldest daughter is a teacher and a successful horse trainer in Georgia. Jerry is a member of the Western Writers of America and is a six year member of the Rotary Club of Tucson of which he is a member of the Scholarship Committee and enjoys helping sell tickets for the Tucson Classics Car Show.
Our Rotary hump day meeting began with her Excellency ELLIE honoring ROGER HARWELL for the 4th Avenue Street Fair “Car Show” ticket sales and DARRELL STEWART and LISA FOGLE for organizing our recent Rotary parties and Home Hospitality.
The Inspiration which took ½ of the meeting was given by DOT KRET. DOT spoke about the “7” facts of giving and helping others. The results of this positive behavior is: 1) decreased stress, 2) increased life expectancy, 3) makes you feel better, 4) this is also called a “helper’s high”, 5) & 6) I missed, and finally, 7) your motivation for life gets a boost. Thank you DOT KRET.
KANDIE VACTOR sung and GARY HIRSCH played “You’re A Grand Ole Flag” by George M. Cohan. What a fabulous song, George, and thank you. It took him a month to write the song. Scholarship Cups are averaging $305 which includes quarterly pledges of approximately $273 per week.
DARRELL STEWART introduced the guests and visiting Rotarians. Happy birthday wishes to JIM SUMWALT, car show ticket seller extraordinaire, who spoke about his Granddaughter becoming ill. He did not know what Granddaughter Cameron has. We will all say a prayer for her. LIZ BAKER, our birthday girl, held a science fair for 2,300 participants – Wow Liz, you are fantastic and Happy Birthday!
Former President HUGH THOMPSON introduced new member, CLINT MABIE. CLINT raised a huge amount of funds for his foundation and he helped 50 Veterans find jobs in the last six months! Great job, CLINT…
FONDA INSLEY, our SAA fined JEFF RONSTADT and CAM MOORE for the constant video postings on Facebook. ROBIN STODDARD, President of Wright Flight, which gets students a free plane flight if they do well in school, generously donated for auction, two plane rides. This auction generated $350 each for our Rotary Club of Tucson Foundation. Thanks Robin.

The program was introduced by MIKE SAGARA. Julia Dailey is the new “Director” of American Red Cross of Southern Arizona, the largest non-profit company in the U.S., and the World. Julia spoke about the home buyer campaign to install smoke alarms. She also spoke about disaster readiness and growing partnerships for disaster relief readiness. Much thanks goes to you and the Red Cross.
Our meeting was closed by PRESIDENT ELLIE and she toasted “Cheers to all of the Red Cross donors”.
Janet Barbrick was born and raised in Jackson MI, a small town west of Ann Arbor; she married young, and has three beautiful sons. Janet worked as a Buyer in a small Tool & Die plant, and worked up to General Manager. She left to work at a larger manufacturing plant, Interlock Corporation, in Westland MI as a Tool Room Buyer. That is where she met her late husband, Augie Barbrick. Janet and Augie married 18 months later and she continued working at Interlock for eight more years.
Augie sold some property, received a good price and they purchased a Print Shop, Printing Plus, Inc., here in Tucson. They moved here in April 1991, opened the shop in May 1991. This was a wonderful experience, assimilating into Tucson. Janet loved working on the front counter with customers of all ages and walks of life. She found her niche in Customer Service. She loves Tucson and doesn’t ever see herself leaving.
Augie was a member of the Rotary Club of Tucson for many years until he suffered a massive stroke in October 2001, less than a month after 9/11, which resulted in not being able to talk nor the use of his right side. Janet’s greatest accomplishment was being able to take care of him for almost 10 years until he died in August 2011.
Janet belonged to Soroptimist International of Desert Tucson for 10+ years and also Executive Women's Golf Association for 15+ years. SIDT taught her the value of service beyond self along with sharing Augie's experience with Rotary. She is honored to be accepted as a member and extends her thanks to Stacia Decker, Gary Scheer, and Augie Barbrick. Say hello to Janet Barbrick!

This past Thursday evening found new members with their mentors learning all about our remarkable Rotary Club from Steve Pickering and his presentation team, Diana Cannon, Chuck Sawyer, Dorinna York, Jim Lubinski and Ellie Patterson. Topics ranged from the objectives of Rotary, the history, how to get the most out of Rotary, ClubRunner, our Club Foundation, Paul Harris Fellows, Tucson Classics Car Show, Ride To End Polio, policies and many other equally important elements of our Club. New members in attendance were Janet Barbrick, Bro Craig, Prodip Dutta, Tom Patterson, Mark Silverman and prospective member, Andy Sherman. These new members then signed up for committees and we closed out the meeting. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages were served.
A busy weekend for Rotarians at the SAHBA Home Show covering all shifts and selling many Tucson Classics Car Show Tickets. The Rotary Club of Tucson Foundation has donated more than one million dollars directly to local charities as a result of its ten prior Tucson Classics Car Shows (including $209,000 from last year’s show that went to five local charities). We’re headed into a fantastic Exce11ent Eleventh Year Tucson Classics Car Show 2017 and will have many more opportunities to sell tickets at future events. It’s fun!
