Rotary President KURTIS DAWSON called the meeting to order at 12 noon indoor from the Tucson Convention Center. The opening of the meeting featured the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag lead by SHANNON ROBERTS and the rendition of “My Country Tis of Thee”. A heartwarming Inspiration was given by MITCH PISIK.
The lunch featured delicious turkey meal with all the trimmings along with some nice slices of ham. As always TCC banquet staff were attentive to the hungry Rotarians.
President KURTIS kicked off the formal part of the meeting by introducing BRITTANY BATTLE, decked out in a military costume in honor of our speaker for the day, who thanked a wonderful group of guests heavy from other Rotary Clubs who were in town for the EL TOUR DE TUCSON, where fellow Rotarians ride the event to support the efforts to defeat Polio.
Today’s program included the commander of the 357th of David-Monthan AFB, COLONEL SCOTT MILLS. Introduction MARK IRVIN honoring Col MILLS with his Rotary honorary member certificate, followed by BOB LOGAN who gave a heartfelt introduction to Col MILLS. But wait, before the program kicked off, JEN HOFFMAN introduced the slate of Rotary Board member candidates and asked everyone to vote using the ballot on the tables.
A round of good questions took place with Col MILLS, now an official Rotary Member, and concluded with the signing of the Make Way for Books, personally selected book, “Amazing Airplane”, before the meeting was turned back to President DAWSON to announce today’s Rotarian Birthdays.
Today’s birthdays featured JUDY KEAGY (10/30), DAN GUARE (11/23), and BRUCE TUNZE (11/24). Happy Birthday to all of you!
THOMAS ROBERTSON was called upon to introduce our newest member, ZACH TAVEL, a Long Realty agent and LARRY ADAMSON introduced DORVITA PARKER-HARRIS as the second new member of the Rotary Club of Tucson. Welcome and congratulations to you both.
Rounding out the presentations, JOE DANISZEWSKI presented Paul Harris Designation to Rabbi STEPHANIE AARON’S three Granddaughters.
Dressed in her camouflage, our Sergeant of Arms -2, BRITTANY BATTLE, jumped into action, with the famous Rotary raffle. No big winner today.
BOB LOGAN introduced the new Rotarian Board members who are BRITTANY BATTLE, ALAN SCHROPE, and JONATHAN WALKUP. Congratulations and thank you!
Following this excitement President KURTIS shared the Rotary Announcements with everyone and directed all to see the sheet on the table. Of course, we were reminded by seeing a platter full of cookies and the author of this recap couldn’t resist. MARCIA KRUMWIEDE discussed the Member Support Committee, DAN KALM reminded all to sign up to ring the bells, JEANNE ZETAH presented the latest number of Car Show tickets sold (20,050) and still counting, and MARK IRVIN along with JON HARNED had Happy Jacksons.
Our next lunch meeting is December 4 with no lunch meeting the week of 11/25 due to the Thanksgiving holiday on 11/28. District Governor Sue Archibald will present at our 12/4 meeting at the TCC.
Meeting was adjourned at 1:20 pm with a toast by MITCH PISIK wishing a safe journey to those Rotarians on Saturday, who were riding EL TOUR to fight Polio.
Inviting prospective members to Rotary events is a great way to showcase the club's values and service. Covering the cost of lunch for first-time attendees is a generous touch that can make newcomers feel welcome and appreciated. It's all about building connections and strengthening our impact in the community. We encourage you to bring your prospective members to a club meeting. They won’t be disappointed.
Double Your Polio Plus Donation Towards Your Next Paul Harris Fellow
A member of our club is challenging members to donate to Polio Plus and support our Ride to End Polio riders by offering matching recognition points, one for one, for donations of a minimum of $100 and a maximum of $500. This means a donation of $100 will become $200, $200 will become $400, etc. towards your next Paul Harris Fellow. This is a win-win for everyone: more children will be vaccinated for polio, you will be closer to your next Paul Harris Fellow, and our Ride to End Polio riders will be encouraged to ride and ride.
This comes at an important time for the continued goal of elimination of the wild polio virus as the numbers demonstrate an increase in the two endemic countries:
2024 Wild Polio Case Total 71 – Afghanistan 23 – Pakistan 48
2023 Wild Polio Case Total 12 – Afghanistan 6 – Pakistan 6
Our riders for El Tour include: Matt Blair, Gary Hirsch, Kandy Hirsch, Chris Monson, Ernie Montagne, Angela Moore, Bob Morken, Lee Olitzky, Alan Rogers, and JW Walkup.
Our riders for the Indoor Ride include: Dana Cole, Jo DeChatelet, Charlotte Harris, Gary Hirsch, Jen Hoffman, Sean Hoffman, Dot Kret, Ann Lancero, Bobby Larson, Ernie Montagne, Steve Pickering, Darrell Stewart and Hugh Thompson.
To participate, make out your check to “The Rotary Foundation” and in the memo put the name of the rider you are supporting and turn in your check at the registration desk at a club meeting no later than the December 4th meeting.
The indoor ride to end Polio consisted of Ernie Montagne, Gary Hirsch, Steve Pickering, Hugh Thompson, Bobby Larson, Charlotte Harris, Sean Hoffman and Dot Kret. Thank you to all the participants who are helping in the eradication of polio from the world!

ATTENTION: Saturday, December 7th, 2024, 7:15 AM. We meet in the parking lot of Fiesta Bowling Lanes. 501 West River Rd.
This is the official advisement of the final scheduled hike for the calendar year 2024 and we have a great one lined up in the Tucson Montains! Please join me on Saturday, 12/7/24 for a morning on the Brown Mountain Loop, departing from the Brown Mountain Picnic Area next door to the Desert Museum. This is a great little loop hike that takes you on the ridge overlooking the Sonoran Desert Museum, Gilbert Ray campground and offers great views of the backside of the Tucson Mountains. This is a moderate hike covering 4.2 miles and 688 vertical feet with hike times projected at 3 hours from beginning to end.
We will meet at the Brown Mountain Picinic area beginning at 7:45AM for an 8AM departure. This access allows for sufficient parking so we will just meet there and no carpool necessary. I will check in as we get closer with updates on anticipated conditions and any time changes that might occur.
