President BOB rang the bell at 12:00; and our Pledge and Song was led by MICHELLE HATCH; with GARY HIRSCH on piano to “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”.
We were inspired by Moses, the homeless Phoenix man, who taught us that, “Kindness is a bridge between all people.” ROB LAMASTER introduced our guests and visitors.
Our speaker was Eric Fritz, manager of the U of A Gem and Mineral Museum which is in the process of becoming the UA Alfie Norville Gem and Mineral Museum to be located at the Historic Pima County Courthouse. It is slated to open 2020. The U of A Gem and Mineral Museum, which is 100 years old, is currently housed in the basement of the Flandrau. The new museum will have three main halls covering everything from the origin of the universe to the evolution of minerals to modern mining. It will feature a beautiful gallery for minerals, featuring some of the most beautiful jewelry in the world. The exhibits of the entire museum will turn over every three years, so all of its vast collection will eventually be displayed. This museum is a collaborative effort between the University of Arizona, Pima County and the City of Tucson. Eric Fritz noted that his, “goal in life is to have everybody play well in the sandbox together.” As this is a shared goal of Rotary, it was a wonderful program to experience. Eric signed the book, “Ricky the Rock that Couldn’t Roll” and will go into the Make Way For Books library.
The birthday Rotarians, JIM DAVENPORT, GARY SCHEER AND TOM CAMPBELL were wished Happy Birthday.
Our Rotary inspiration from President BOB LOGAN was an inspiring video of “Rotary Making a Difference” from Great Britain and Ireland Rotary Clubs. We are in good company around the world in Rotary! And what a nice lead in to JO DECHATELET, who introduced and we celebrated the 17 members of the Rotary Legacy Society. Congratulations and thank you!
BRUCE JACOBS reminded us to sign up for the Holiday Mixer on Tuesday, 12/17 at The Playground which replaces our Wednesday, 12/18 meeting; and President BOB stated the Tucson Boys Chorus will be singing holiday music starting at 6:00 p.m.
BILL MESCH presented BOB OHLFEST with a blue badge; he was most welcomed by everyone present. Congrats to you BOB! ROBERT O’BRIEN discussed the Arizona Bowl Game and how it benefits the Car Show. An email was sent with all information and ticket purchasing.
President BOB ended the meeting a few minutes early and would like to bank these minutes. He gave the quote and toast.
