Dr. Robert C. Robbins is the 22nd president of the University of Arizona. From 2012 - 2016, he served as CEO of the Texas Medical Center, after enjoying a 20-year faculty career at Stanford University School of Medicine.
While at the University of Arizona, Dr. Robbins has led the creation and implementation of a strategic plan focused on the opportunities and challenges presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the convergence of biological, digital, and physical technologies and sectors. Designed to amplify Arizona’s competitiveness on the world stage, the plan emphasizes the UA’s strengths as a public, land-grant research university with global reach and a rich history of international collaboration.
Alonzo Carter joined the Arizona Football program as Assistant Head Coach and Running Backs Coach in January of 2024. Carter begins his tenure with the Wildcats following seven seasons with San Jose State.
The Wildcat assistant has 18 years of head coaching experience. His teams compiled a 129-69-3 win-loss record, won 11 league championships, three California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.) Oakland Section titles, and six post-season bowl games. He was named league or conference coach of the year in seven of those seasons.
At Cal State Hayward, he and a group of friends answered an audition call, became backup dancers and rap artists, and toured extensively with iconic hip-hop musician MC Hammer. Carter was awarded a multi-platinum record signifying at least 10 million albums sold for “Please Hammer Don’t Hurt Em.”
Carter was inducted into the African American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. He holds coaching certifications from the American Football Coaches Association, the California Interscholastic Federation and the California Community College Athletic Association. Carter was selected to participate in the Bill Walsh NFL Diversity Coaching Fellowship program in 2017 with the San Francisco 49ers.
WELCOME Rotarians announced PRESIDENT MARGARET HIGGINS this Wednesday’s meeting, dressed in wonderful Rodeo wear to celebrate our local rodeo this week. PRESIDENT MARGARET rang the bell at 12p to officially get the meeting started then made the announcement on the buffet, we will have fellowship first then at 12:15p we will start the presentation by KHRIS DODGE on “Why Are Music and the Arts Important to Our Community”.
After lots of great fellowship time and a delicious buffet lunch, PRESIDENT MARGARET HIGGINS started the meeting with the ringing of the bell again. We were led in the pledge and song by our amazing Executive Director DORINNA YORK and Administrative Assistant ERICA CANTUA. We would not be able to function without you! Today’s song was “Star Spangled Banner”.
MARGARET returned to the mic to announce get well wishes for JON WANG (One-Wing WONG now), who recently had surgery on an injured shoulder, he injured it in a skiing accident and for JOE PENNINGTON who cracked his pelvis during the same ski trip! Additionally, WAYNE MEYER had surgery to put a stint in an artery. Let’s wish them well and speedy recoveries.
The Inspirational moment was given by JEFF RONSTADT who shared a joke about a three-legged chicken. Then JEFF shared his thoughts on how we can be the best we can be and live by the four-way test.
Seargeant at Arms DAN KALM stepped up to the podium to introduce our guests for this Wednesday luncheon. Welcome all Rotarians and guests. It’s great to see all of you here. DAN shared that if any guest is looking to join a great group, this IS THE group and now is THE time since we are in a membership drive for March Madness!
PRESIDENT MARGARET introduced the amazingly talented KHRIS DODGE who will share his talents with us and speak about “Why Are Music and The Arts Important to Our Community”. KHRIS started off behind the keyboard by playing a little upbeat ditty as he went through teaching us how music can make us feel specific emotions, even without words. KHRIS even danced a little and wow, he’s got moves! We should all know or be aware that music is inherent in us all. So many emotions can be felt with just a few notes from the keyboard, the beat of a drum or the strum of a guitar. We feel it, it's part of our DNA, it is a universal language, a way for all to speak the same language without speaking words. KHRIS played a few melodies for us and walked us through understanding how it’s a universal language. Music is important to us all; it can express so much, and we can learn so much just by listening. Music can elicit a feeling, a reminiscent emotion of a previous time. It can take you back to last week or 30 years ago; music is so powerful. The local Arts and Music offered also bring in millions of dollars to Pima County. For example, local non-profit Arts organizations contributed $113 million dollars to our economy and audiences contributed $138 million dollars, combined that’s a total of $251 million of total impact to Pima County. Non-profits supported over 4,650 jobs in Pima County, that’s over $45 million in tax revenue! Music is engaging, it drives commerce to all local businesses. The visitor economy, close to 20% of attendees are non-local visitors; we have become a destination not only for our food and culture but for our entertainment and the various local events offered throughout the year. What an amazing impact! KHRIS wrapped up with a few additional moments behind the keyboard.
PRESIDENT MARGARET HIGGINS announced the book “I Know a Shy Fellow Who Swallowed a Cello” will be added to our Make Way for Books Library, KHRIS DODGE will sign the book before it is added to the library as we continue to support children’s literacy in Tucson.

It was great to hear all of them share how much growth was accomplished in a short time. Each thanked our members for helping them get to the RYLA camp.
Dave Maughan was next up to announce the Southern AZ Home Show, previously the SABHA Home Show. He announced that there are complimentary tickets on the tables, please take them and come see the great vendors at the Home Show at the TCC on March 15th-17th.

Hello “Adopt a Road” volunteers! Now that I have completed my car show responsibilities 😉, I can move forward on launching the Adopt a Road program. Last week Lee, Jonathan, and Bruce met with a TCB contact to review our selected section of N Oracle Road (W River Road to W Wetmore Road).
The first cleanup will begin on Saturday, MARCH 9, 2024. Let’s meet in front of Fiesta Lanes Bowling (on River just west of Oracle) 501 W River Rd., at 7:15 am for a briefing and to hand out the equipment. The March date should give everyone time to plan and attend.
After 6 months of consistent clean-ups, we will receive a sign at the adopted site with our name The Rotary Club of Tucson. We can meet this requirement by cleaning up every other month or so. After each cleanup, we will submit a volunteer report.
For safety reasons, we are limited to 25 volunteers and NO ONE UNDER 18.
Tools and Supplies
Tucson Clean and Beautiful provides the necessary equipment to conduct the clean up e.g., safety vests, gloves, grabbers, trash bags, etc. I will pick supplies up this week.
You may want to bring your gloves and please bring your own water!

SAFETY GUIDELINE FOR VOLUNTEERS
● Wear toe covering shoes (no sandals)
● Long pants and long sleeves
● Gloves are recommended
● Bring sun hat and sunscreen
● Drink plenty of water
● Cell phone or headset use during clean ups is not allowed
● Do not pick up any of the following: medical waste, condoms, chemicals,
dead animals, hypodermic needles. If you encounter any of these
objects, please let your leader know (Leader may dispose this item safely
if you have already been briefed of how to dispose of them)
● Sharp objects such as broken glass may be collected with a broom/pan
or shovel by an adult
● Work in a group during daylight hours (7 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
Saturday, March 9 - Tanque Verde Ridge Trail - 7:45AM meet time for 8AM start
This 3.1 mile trek is located in Saguaro National Park East. It is considered moderately challenging and can actually lead all the way to the top of Tanque Verde Peak for those seeking something a bit more challenging. We can certainly make the decision on how far to go on the day of hike.
I hope to see many of you there and more to follow!
SAN XAVIER MISSION: On the 2nd Wednesday, March 13th we plan to tour the San Xavier Mission. You will need to sign up at www.tucsonrotary.org under Upcoming Events no later than Wednesday March 6th. The tour takes approximately one hour and will start at 11:00 am. For those that would like to carpool there will be two locations. One at the Double Tree on Alvernon (South side near the ballrooms) and the other at the Tucson Mall just south of the Sears store. If you plan to carpool, please arrive by 10:00 with the cars leaving at 10:15. Please let me know if you will carpool and which location so no one is left behind. For those that have time for lunch after the tour we are suggesting BJ’s or Olive Garden (Tucson Mall) and Locale or Portillo’s (near the Double Tree) but those going to lunch can decide on other locations if they would like.
The cost is a minimum donation of $5 at the mission. Please sign up early if you can. They need one docent for every 15-20 people so early sign-ups are appreciated.
