State of College Sports
Dave Heeke (pronounced Hee-key) was named Vice President and Director of Athletics at the University Arizona in February of 2017. Heeke’s vision for Arizona Athletics centers around a culture of excellence, a focus on a first-class student-athlete experience, championship-caliber competitive performances in competition and in the classroom; as well as enhancing fan experience and providing a tremendous workplace environment.

The impact of the Heeke era on Arizona Athletics was immediate with an overhaul of facilities, groundbreaking academic achievements, the elevation of the department’s fundraising to unprecedented heights, and the enhancement of the overall organizational, employee focus and culture.

Arizona Athletics posted another banner year of fundraising success in 2021-22, which was punctuated by the department’s official announcement of the new $14.8 million William M. “Bill” Clements Golf Center. The new, state-of-the-art home facility for Arizona’s men’s and women’s golf programs will be constructed at Tucson Country Club.

Heeke continued his nationally-recognized leadership and service to college athletics with an appointment to the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee in 2022, becoming just the third athletic director in Arizona history to serve on the committee.

On the academic front, the athletics department continued to thrive in Heeke’s fifth year at Arizona as the 2021-22 year raised the bar for excellence in all facets. Arizona student-athletes continued to reach historic heights in the classroom, posting a 3.157 overall semester GPA in Fall of 2021 that marked the highest Fall semester GPA in department history.

An East Lansing, Michigan native, Heeke received a bachelor’s degree from Albion College in 1985 and a master’s degree from Ohio State University in 1987. At Albion, he was a co-captain of the baseball team and a member of the club hockey team.

Heeke and his wife, Liz, have three boys, Max, Zach, Ryan, and daughter-in-law, Merissa.

Mystery Editor ~ 5/10/23
By MHE (Mysteriously Handsome Editor)

Beef brisket and cobbler desert is delicious !  The food here at the TCC is consistently terrific. Cheerful BRUCE JACOBS MC’d and first up was Mayberry (not the t.v. show but something financial) SHAWN TACEY leading the pledge and threatening to sing Mustang Sally.  We drowned him out with America the Beautiful, which it is!

Party Venture BRITTANY BATTLE inspired us to lean in to challenges and quoted some mysterious local Rotarian philosopher with a bunch of good messages, and one favorite: “you are not what you have become, you are what you have overcome”.  Cool, huh?

Reflective BRUCE let us have a moment for quiet prayer for MIKE TENNENBAUM’S family and friends grieving for him. MIKE went to heaven April 27th, at 77 years old. Rotarian since 1982 and finally at the best club in Tucson since 2019, MIKE is deeply missed.

PAT LENNAN fell and broke ribs and is in Banner U., room 8120.  Off a horse? Skateboarding?  Mountain biking? Fending off a bear? Guess we just speculate …

Celebration of Life for EMERY BARKER next week.

Musical KHRIS DODGE entertainingly introduced guests and we all warmly greeted them.

PP 101 MARK IRVIN introduced fabulously successful entrepreneur, FLETCHER MCCUSKER, who gives back to Tucson by leading the booze, food, and music revival of Rio Nuevo. You find downtown cool & fun now?  Thank FLETCHER. This Tucson cheerleader on steroids created a growing snowball: successful projects generating sales tax revenue over the years, that further subsidize new projects. The rest of the country is waking up to this success, ranking Tucson in the top ten of places to live, work, eat, sleep, bike, hike, and go to have fun! Last year 35k normal folk and 10k Californians moved here. We tried asking FLETCHER questions about upcoming projects and politics and shockingly, he diplomatically told us to pound sand. No wonder he is so good at this!

June 14th meeting will be car show survey results / update on prior assemblies.

Happy Jackson GERRY HALLOWELL is a great grandfather and received a stuff dog for his little one!

One of the first three women in our club, happy talker and diplomat NINA TRASOFF celebrated her birthday by offering to tell showbiz stories for booze.

The BATTLE is back with BRITTANY introducing new member, Canadian, JTED instructor, capsized canoer, and therefore current bicyclist LUKE SMITH.  Congratulations and welcome to the Club!

And happy talker NINA introduced blue badge receiver CHITA STEVENSON, who basically keeps the Tucson Jazz Festival going and that DODGEY guy in line.

Speaking of which, our Sergeant at Arms, the musically entertaining KHRIS DODGE, did the raffle and I did not win.  DODGEY.

A Happy Jackson by Real Estate guru and radio talker SANDRA JOHNSON introduced Reach for the Stars Kira & Carlos, event Friday Sept. 29th.

Cheerful BRUCE toasted FLETCHER’S success and rang the gong.  Full and happy, we adjourned another great meeting!

Camp Lawton
Tucson Club Rotarian earned his “Coati Clean-up” patch at the Camp Lawton Scout Camp service day. Over seventy volunteers spent the day prepping the camp for operations this summer. Jim Ruboyianes was our great Rotary representative and cooked burgers and dogs for everyone for lunch. Thanks Jim for your outstanding help!
Miles of Memories
Miles of Memories

I shared with those in attendance on the 13th that this next year I want us to share “Miles of Memories” together. I referenced the memories we have created together over the years and the impact we have had in so many others lives as well as our own.

The children and the parents receiving the grass ball field in San Carlos transformed from a dirt lot. The recipients and their families that obtained their mobility by receiving a wheelchair in Nogales. The memories of our member that participated along with the memories of working together on various local workday projects. Our hiking, golf, home hospitality fellowships and the list goes on.

I ask for you to help me on “our journey” over this next year by sponsoring me in the “Miles of Memories.” My goal is to walk a minimum of 35 miles a week, 1,825 for the year and honestly want to surpass 2000+. I would like for you to consider donating by the mile and we will share the outcome at the first meeting of each month on my progress.

Donations can go to the Foundation toward a Paul Harris, the President’s Discretionary Fund, or others of your choosing. I want us to have fun on our journey over this next year and to INSPIRE each other and our benefactors through the world of Rotary.

Thank you for your support in making our 102nd year one where we create memories together.
