DARK DAY: There will be no Rotary Club of Tucson lunch meeting on February 1, 2017 due to the Gem Show scheduled at the DoubleTree. Since this is a scheduled Dark Day, no make up is required.
Our “hump day” Rotary meeting was opened by PRESIDENT ELLIE with good wishes about our car show. A whopping $209,000+ was given away to five charities. Great job RCOT members! Our president also thanked Karl Woolridge, Bureau Chief of Pima County Sheriff’s Department for their involvement with our car show.
The Inspiration was given by the one and only “STU”. I think we will give him just one name like “Cher”. Pledge and Song was played by GARY HIRSCH and sung by MIKE PELLER.
T.V. commercial star, CHRIS EDWARDS introduced our many visiting Rotarians and guests. CHRIS, the name is pronounced Bul-zomi! Our birthday boys were: GARY GETHMANN, former RCOT President and deep sea diver and pianist EMERY BARKER, 40 years in the club and our whistle president. Also celebrating his birthday, BRETT STEIN, three year member with Northwestern Mutual.
Sergeant At Arms, FONDA INSLEY gave a $100 fine to our Treasurer, GLENN EWING for his office supply company, Gibson’s and recognized DOT KRET for the January 8, 2011 memorial at the old Pima County Courthouse. This event that wounded Gabby Giffords along with 19 people and the killing of 6 people will never be forgotten. In fact, this project funded in part by TMC with $500,000 might even become a National Memorial.
CHRIS EDWARDS and BOBBY LARSON gave up their U of A basketball tickets for auction. Thank you gentlemen!

The Program was introduced by our Princeton Grad, Vietnam Vet, Orthopedic U of A retired surgeon, and former RCOT President, JON WANG. Doctor JON gave us our speaker, Tabitha Yim’s bio as the most decorated gymnastics athlete in Stanford University’s history. Tabitha was also an assistant coach at Stanford and taught for “Teach for America”. Coach Yim also gave our club members some really good thoughts to live by:
1. When you reach out and grab someone’s hand … that is love and that is family … we lift each other up!
2. She also tells her “Gymcats” (love that name) that you need to embrace the 5 principles: 1) passion, 2) commitment, 3) balance, 4) belief, 5) family.
This was a memorable presentation – go Gymcats!
PRESIDENT ELLIE gave us a Nadia Comaneci (a Perfect 10 Olympian) quote which ended, “Reach for the Stars”!
Your 2018 TCCS Chair was born and raised in Chicago IL and attended Central School and Maine West in Des Plaines, IL. His first job was working in a gas station starting at 15. Got to work through the gas shortage era during the winter and couldn’t wear gloves because everyone had locking gas caps and paid cash so you had a “changer” on your hip and a wad of cash in your pocket. Must have had some influence in his future path.
His father was known as “the silver dollar man” in Chicago. He was an attorney and would tip court clerks a few silver dollars because they would always remember him and people always felt “rich” with a few silver dollars in their pocket. His mother “quit” working for his father and she and our 2018 Chair started college together at Oakton Community College and had some classes together. She went on to be an actress doing theater, movies, and commercials.
His parents had been told due to learning disabilities that he probably wasn’t a candidate for college and they should think about “trade school. However he proved them wrong. In 1977, he came to the UA for his last two years of college. Drinking age was 19 and he had just turned 19 so the first semester he studied at Stumble Inn, The Green Dolphin, and the Shanty. After the first semester he realized he might need to focus on school and graduated in 1979 with his bachelors prior to turning 21 and has since received an MBA from the Univ. of Phoenix in 1986.
He and his wife Erin have two boys Gene and Aidan. He enjoys hiking, golfing, sking, travel and I still think drinking. He has worked in many different capacities in past car shows. At various times in his business career, he has had the responsibility for multiple county and statewide operations and is currently the Executive Vice President and COO for Title Security Agency. We have two new members that have recently joined our club:
Dawne Bell is the daughter of a Rotarian- is the CEO of Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona. She is an English major graduate of Kalamazoo College in Michigan, and she has her Masters’ Degree from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Four interesting experiences in Dawne’s life are: (1 Her college junior year was at a University in Madrid, Spain. Her host mother was a film director, so film movie stars were constant visitors in her host home, including – eat your heart out gals – Antonio Banderas. (2 Her high school was in President Gerald R. Ford’s home town, so she had the pleasure of meeting him. She has had the pleasure meeting and shaking hands with Ford, as well as Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George Bush, Sr., and Barack Obama – that’s five U.S. Presidents. (3 She had an interesting early life: she moved, following her minister father, nine times before age 14, and has a license plate from each state in which she lived. (4 Dawne is married to Rob Vander Voord, a graphic designer and web site developer. Dawne says her marriage was an arranged marriage. Her mother, who worked in an insurance agency where Rob worked, tells Rob to join her one day at a social event after work. She also tells Dawne to join her at the same event. Then, at the event, mom introduces them to each other, and then splits. And they have been together for 14 years
Dawne’s work career has been in money raising in the non-profit world: First, at Grand Rapids Art Museum for a year for a major gifts campaign (1 year), then down the road to YWCA in Kalamazoo for 2 years, squeezing in a Certificate of Fund Raising Management from Indiana University, the premier institution in US in that field, then to New Mexico at Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless for 3 years, followed by Temple Hospital Foundation in Albuquerque for 2.5 years, then she was off to New York City, at Care for the Homeless (the largest homeless non-profit in NYC), for 3 years until the opportunity of a lifetime came along when she became CEO of WFSA in January 2015. What a find for us here in Tucson.
WFSA – whose mission is to empower women and girls was started in 1991, has three employees and 200 volunteers. WFSA will make grants of $700,000 this year to 20 organizations in Tucson and Southern Arizona that will affect 15,000 women and children.
Although she has only been in Tucson a little over a year and one-half she is already involved in the community, including: Arizona Grant Makers Forum, Association of Fund Raising Professionals, Non-Profit Executive Together, Tucson Festival of Books, Women at the Top, and Women’s Funding Network. Please introduce yourself to Dawne if you haven't yet had the chance to meet her.
Rachel Schaming, a graduate of the University of Florida, Rachel’s career has included human resource positions at NASA/Houston, The Texas Medical Center/Houston, two New York City law firms, a large medical imaging company and a technology company.
She speaks and consults internationally on organizational management concerns. She is the author of three publications on workplace dynamics. Her newest publication is: Who’s the Boss – Confront the Elephant in the Room.
Rachel is a senior certified professional (SCP) with the Society for Human Resource Management, a fellow in the American Bar Association Law Practice Management Section and is the Past President of the International Association of Legal Administrators. Rachel is currently serving as Interim Executive Director of the Pima Community College Foundation.
She is a master certified executive coach specializing in coaching leaders who are perceived as abrasive. Please say hello to Rachel if you haven’t yet and take some time to get to know her.

What a fun social mixer we had this past Thursday evening at Trident II Grill. 54 members and guests showed up to enjoy fellowship and a tasty beverage and appetizers. Sometimes it can be difficult to meet new members at the club luncheon or get reunited with members you haven’t seen in a while, so a Happy Hour like this can be just that opportunity to visit with other members and get reacquainted or catch up on the happenings of other members. It’s a great way to get to know the newer members. Thanks Danny, of Trident II, for providing a nice space for us.

The 2nd Annual Rotary Daze YMCA Ranch Camp Project's date has changed due to the Easter weekend. The new dates are scheduled for April 28 & 29, 2017.
