Tucson Roadrunners: We are Tucson's Professional Team

The Tucson Roadrunners are proud to be Tucson's professional team.  Entering our third season, we reflect on the successes of our first two campaigns while focusing on the continued growth of our organization for years to come.

Bob Hoffman ~ Biography

Bob Hoffman, President of the Tucson Roadrunners, joined the club ahead of the team's inaugural season in 2016, bringing over two decades of professional sports experience to the Old Pueblo.  Prior to coming to Tucson, Hoffman served as the Executive Vice President of the Quad City Mallards and previously worked with the Utah Grizzlies and Louisville Panthers.

Mystery Editor ~ 9/12/18
President CHUCK opened the meeting by welcoming back HUGH THOMPSON. President CHUCK also asked everyone to remember FRANK ZUNNO who is in hospice at Tucson Medical Center.

ELLEN WHEELER, now back with Pima County, gave the inspiration urging everyone to practice loving kindness, patience and peace. The inestimable BOB SHAFF, Past President, led us in the Pledge and song “God Bless America”. KAREN PUTNAM introduced our guests and visiting Rotarians.

We had three Birthday Rotarians:
  • STACIA DECKER thanked her sponsors & mentors father GARY SHEER and mother-in-law IRENE DECKER. STACIA’S son is a world ranked Jet Ski competitor, and STACIA is a world class auction organizer!
  • BOB ERNSTEIN, former head of the UA Student Union, remembered his sponsor BILLY JOE VARNER. BOB looks forward to his 61st anniversary with his wife CHAR on Saturday. CHAR continues to bless everyone with hugs and kisses.
  • ANN PLIMPTON thanked her sponsor KATHY KITAGAWA, remembered receiving a rotary scholarship to help with her many educational accomplishments, and spoke proudly of her son JOHN, 6 children, and 18 grandchildren.
The Dynamic Paul Harris Duo of President Elect BOB LOGAN and Past President CHARLOTTE HARRIS made Paul Harris presentations to the following:

- DIANA CANNON received her first Paul Harris. DIANA hales from Flint MI, is the proud parent of two children and six dogs and enjoys Rotary because it teaches us humanity.
- BUZZ DEMPSEY received his first Paul Harris. BUZZ is a retired soccer referee (an excellent one for certain), skilled mortgage lender with over $1 billion in residential mortgages to his credit, and a practitioner of hot yoga. BUZZ enjoys Rotary as a significant way to give back to the community.
- FONDA INSLEY is a graduate of Catalina Foothills, daughter of one of the founders of the Children’s Clinics, and recipient of Volunteer of the Year for her work to support AIDS research. FONDA supports Rotary because it serves as a role model for how we can relate to each other despite our differences and in service to others.
- Past President CLIFF BOWMAN received his Paul Harris plus 7. CLIFF is our own American Hero, having served four deployments to the Middle East, over 100 missions, and recipient of the Bronze Star. CLIFF believes in Rotary because of its ability to break down barriers to achieve great things.

Sergeant at Arms BOBBY LARSON conducted our raffle and auctioned football tickets donated by LARRY ADAMSON and Past President JON WANG. (BOBBY also guaranteed a win this Saturday…) We had the following announcements:
  • President CHUCK brought us another Old Time Member Photo of the ever-funny STU GOLDMAN who never looked better.
  • President CHUCK noted that the Rotary Office will be closed on 9/14 and limited hours week of 9/17.
  • President CHUCK invited everyone, especially new members to the District Conference.
  • President CHUCK reviewed the current Car Show Ticket Sales Results and invited everyone to participate in preparing two parts of the Gregory School Property for our show.
  • Past President JON WANG reminded everyone to wear Rotary Club of Tucson Community Service Polo Shirts, available at the rear of the room for purchase.
  • And DARRELL STEWART offered a Happy Jackson to celebrate the opening of his wife’s Botanica facials and body therapy studios.

President CHUCK invited Assistant District Governor Ann Huber to introduce our speaker Kirk Reed - District Governor of District 5500. DG Kirk is a 3rd Generation Rotarian of 27 years (his family represents 96 years of Rotary membership!) DG Kirk is a retired pastor who spoke about who inspired us (from the Latin root that means to breathe or infuse spirit) – his examples include a trip to see his heroes the Chicago Cubs and the president of a Sierra Vista Rotary Club who grew up without water. DG Kirk’s motto is: “Dream Big, Have Fun, Get Stuff Done!!” He suggests we join Rotary International President Rassin in bringing water to every household in Haiti, emulate his 97-year-old mother who enjoys every Rotary meeting she attends, and participate in the Rotary Peace Academy.

DG Kirk signed a book for our lending library: “A Hippy-Hoppy Toad”.

President CHUCK closed with a quote from Ghandi: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
President's Monthly Report ~ 9/14/18
This week we had District Governor Kirk Reed join us for a Board meeting followed by our weekly meeting where Kirk presented the program.  His goals for our District for the year can be summed up in just seven words:

- Think Big
- Have Fun
- Get Stuff Done

Kirk had a very positive meeting with our Board and I thought delivered a meaningful program to the Club.  He is looking to grow Rotary and we have jumped on board by working with other Rotary Clubs in Tucson to see how we can “raise the tide” for all Rotary Clubs in Tucson.  I will provide you with details on the three specific projects in an upcoming Monthly Report.

We have a lot going on as a Club, AS IT IS CAR SHOW SEASON!  Chairman Bruce Jacobs, the SLT (Strategic Leadership Team) and the TLT (Tactical Leadership Team) have been doing an outstanding job of getting ready for the 12th Annual Tucson Classics Car Show.

Ticket sales is the name of the game these days and our “Past President” Candidates are fighting for your votes.  Make sure to sell tickets not only in person, but take advantage of selling at an Event (it’s fun!) or by selling tickets by email.  Talk to your Candidate if you have questions or need any help.  It truly is going to be a “Terrific Twelph”!

Also, right around the corner is our District Conference on Friday 9/28 to Saturday 9/29, and it is being held in “our backyard” at the DoubleTree.  There are great programs, a hospitality Suite on Friday night that is free, a reception on Saturday night for our District Governor Elect Ellie, that is available if you sign up for the dinner on Saturday night.  At the dinner the keynote speaker is none other than…President Teddy Roosevelt!  We also have other “dignitaries” from our Club involved, Bob Shaff will be the Key Note speaker for the Friday breakfast and Fonda Insley will be the MC for the event and Darrell Stewart will be serving his famous Seafood Chowder at the Friday night mixer…along with beer and wine.  Join us there!  You can sign up or get additional information online at the District 5500 website.

This just in, a somber note, Frank Zunno passed away on Sunday afternoon.  He was a long-time member for 27 years, and his passing is a great loss to the Club.  If you did not know Frank, he was a great man and Rotarian.  He lived a very full life passing away at 95.  We will miss him.  We will get out details on his memorial service as soon as we receive them.

YIR,
Chuck Sawyer
President 2018-2019

Rotary District 5500 Conference ~ 9/28 and 9/29, 2018
The Rotary District 5500 Conference will be held on September 28-29, 2018 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 445 S. Alvernon.  Register at  www.rotaryd5500.org.   Room rates at the DoubleTree are available at a special rate of $79 until mid September.  The Rotary Club of Tucson will host a hospitality suite on Friday evening and also host a reception on Saturday evening for incoming District Governor, Ellie Patterson.  We encourage all members to attend the Friday and Saturday night festivities.  This is a wonderful way to meet other Rotarians from around the District and also support our member and past president, Ellie Patterson.
