Clancy Shields, who has extended his contract through 2028, has guided the Wildcats to the program's first-ever Pac-12 Tournament Championship, three consecutive Pac-12 Regular Season Championships, three Sweet 16 appearance and an undefeated home record in the 2023 season. The Cats have also hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament for two straight seasons under Shields. He has led the team to a number of program-best rankings and coached senior captain Jonas Ziverts to the program's first ITA Southwest Region Player of the Year award.
Widely recognized as one of the youngest and most dynamic coaches in college tennis, Shields has led the Wildcats back into the national spotlight with four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances since 2019. The 2024 campaign was perhaps the most history in program history as Arizona won the Pac-12 Tournament Championship and the Pac-12 Regular Season Championship. Shields led the Wildcats to the squad's best-ever ITA ranking during the 2024 season, checking in as high as No. 5. He was recognized as the ITA Southwest Region Coach of the Year for his efforts.
Under the guidance of Shields, Colton Smith and Jay Friend became the first Wildcat tandem to be named Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year. Smith, Friend and Gustaf Strom each were named to the All-Pac-12 Team while Nick Lagaev and Herman Hoeyeraal tabbed All-Pac-12 Second Team honors. Casper Christensen additionally garnered All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention recognition.
Smith made a run in the 2024 NCAA Singles Championships, defeating four ranked opponents on his way to the tournament semifinals. He became the program's first All-American since the 2006 season in the process.
Shields was hired at Arizona after three seasons as the head coach at Utah State, where he led the Aggies to the 2016 Mountain West title and was named Wilson/ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year and MWC Coach of the Year.
Shields helped take a USU program that was last in the conference to one that set school records for victories in both his second (18) and third (21) seasons. The Aggies increased their national relevance under his tutelage as they climbed as high as No. 62 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings during Shields' second season, which was a program record, before they reached No. 56 last season. In addition, Shields mentored four All-Mountain West performers and the 2016 Mountain West Player of the Year during his tenure.
Prior to his time at USU, Shields served as an assistant coach at Boise State from 2010-13, helping the Broncos to back-to-back Mountain West Championships. The Broncos advanced to their third NCAA Tournament with Shields in 2013.
As a student-athlete at Boise State, Shields was named the 2009 WAC Player of the Year and earned All-WAC first-team honors for both doubles and singles play seven times. He led the Broncos to three WAC titles (2006, '07, '09) and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. Shields was ranked as high as No. 17 in singles and No. 11 in doubles by the ITA.
A 2010 graduate of Boise State with a degree in kinesiology, Shields was a four-time Academic All-WAC honoree and a first-team Academic All-American in 2007.
PRESIDENT KURTIS called the meeting to order and introduced new member, LIBY LENTZ, to lead us in the Pledge and song, “Star Spangled Banner” with Co-Chief Sergeant at Arms, KHRIS DODGE, accompanying on the piano.
JASON FLAX offered the inspiration with a theme that success doesn’t happen overnight. Much like a Chinese Bamboo Tree seed, sometimes you need to water the seed for 5 years and then it will grow more than 90 feet in just 5 weeks. Let’s continue to water the next generation so that they may succeed and grow once their roots are set.
KHRIS DODGE introduced a large group of guests with a thunderous ovation. That was because of the storm outside. It was really great to see RALPH PHILLIPS!

JONATHAN ROTHSCHILD introduced our speaker. He said that as you work as Mayor, you meet talented people and Chad Kasmar was one of those really, talented people. Then, Tucson Chief of Police, Chad Kasmar spoke. He introduced and thanked his Deputy Chief of Police, Monica Prieto. She is the second in charge and will be first in charge when Chad takes a vacation starting this Friday. It’s a well-earned vacay and has been 4 years since his last vacation. He said that Tucson is the 33rd largest city in the USA. Seven years ago, we had more than 1,100 police officers. Today, we have 750 police offers yet the crime is more complex. The Tucson Police have a $195 million budget. 95% of that goes to its personnel. The balance is for supplies to include guns, drones, vehicles, etc. The budget is an ongoing challenge for Chief Chad didn’t complain. The Tucson Police will work with what they have regardless of the budget. Fentanyl is a huge problem in our community and is the first synthetic drug that the Mexican drug cartels can manufacture. 50% is seized at the border and the other 50% makes it to the USA. It’s really affordable in Tucson, which creates an even bigger problem. A dose of fentanyl in Tucson costs less than $1 and in New York City it costs $20 for a dose. Fentanyl is a country wide issue. Chief Chad said that we have a gun problem, and it keeps him up at night. We’ve had over 100 shootings this year. Pedestrian fatalities are a challenge also and most are attributed to drug issues. The Tucson Police is committed to an evidence-based strategy for enforcement. They are a leader in NIBIN (The National Integrated Ballistic Information Network) that tracks shell casings and ultimately tracks individual guns, how they’re used and the network they may be a part of. Regardless of all of the challenges, Chief Chad said he would have quit a long time ago if he didn’t have faith that Tucson can and will be a better, safer place. Thanks for keeping us safe Chief! Chief Chad signed the book “I Want To Be A Police Officer.”
SALLY MONTAGNE was celebrating her birthday. Did you know that she worked for three Presidents of the US: Eisenhower, Kennedy and LBJ? JENN DELANEY was celebrating her birthday and something that you may not know is that she believes that her daughter is the greatest gift she has received…and her son is really great too. ANA GREIF was celebrating her birthday and is a global traveler. ANA has been to 37 different countries. Happy Birthday to these ladies!
MICHAEL GUYMAN was arrested and fined by BRITTANY BATTLE for writing an article in the Tucson Sentinel. MARK IRVIN was arrested and fined for knowing so many people and TIM PUTENNEY was fined for being such a good friend of BRITTANY. Hmm, be careful who your friends are.
GARY HIRSCH introduced new member LIBY LENTZ who has worked with the Pima Medical Institute for 31 years. She started as the HR Director and is now the President. Next, STU GOLDMAN was fined by KHRIS DODGE for not being obnoxious enough and JAMAL GIVENS was fined by BRITTANY for being such a big deal. These Co-Chief Sergeant at Arms were on a rampage!
DIANA CANNON presented a Blue Badge to SANDY McCASLIN, who is the General Manager of the Tucson Raquet & Fitness Club. Congrats on getting your Blue!
JOE DANISZEWSKI presented MONTE CLAUSEN with his Paul Harris Award +5. MONTE is a 21-year member and is friends with Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney. Interestingly, MONTE avoids politics.
The meeting started to go a little long, like this Mystery Editor submission so KHRIS DODGE pulled the winning raffle ticket as well as card. CHRIS EDWARDS was the big winner of $94 which he gave back to the club. Then, CHRIS was fined for advertising on the new model train at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. Thanks for all CHRIS!
PRESIDENT KURTIS worked quickly through announcements and reminded us that we may review all of the events and projects via the printed sheets on our tables. We may also review our website for what’s going on. We are looking for hosts for our “Quiet Week” on September 11th. Email Dorinna if you’d like to lead a lunch or meeting somewhere. KURTIS showed a slide with various photos of members with Red Badge members. Remember to take selfies with Red Badge members and more importantly, get to know them! KURTIS showed images of Wilbur the Wildcat as he traveled to Sturgis for the Motorcycle rally with DAN KALM among other places. If you’d like to take Wilbur somewhere, ask KURTIS if you may have custody for a short time.
JEANNE ZETAH updated us with our progress on Car Show tickets. We’re at 15% of our goal. Go sell tickets! MARCY EULER let us know what we’ll be receiving in an email regarding volunteering for the Car Show. Even if you can’t attend, please complete the email. There is an “Assignment” that lists that you can’t attend. If you don’t participate, she’ll keep asking you.

I just wanted to get this advisement out for the final trek of the First Annual Summer Hiking Series. This is always a great trail with great views of the city. Martha and I are hopeful to see another large group like the June trip and this is always a popular one.

Lower Aspen Loop & Marshall Gulch - 6:45AM departure for 8:00 AM start
We will meet at LeBuzz located at Tanque Verde & Catalina Highway. This is a moderate hike covering just under 4 miles with 831 feet of vertical with hiking time of approximately 2.5 hours. As always, a stop for a bite/beverage at one of the local establishments is likely.
This beautiful hike offers outdoor enthusiasts a memorable experience in the Pusch Ridge Wilderness. Hike through towering pine trees and groves of aspen trees in a lovely forested area. The trail meanders uphill, creating a gradual ascent of the ridge. The forest opens up various times along the way to reveal picturesque views of the surrounding mountains.

Lee Olitzky and I are planning the next Rotary Cycling Fellowship to be on Saturday October 26 at 8 AM starting at St Phillips Plaza South side parking lot near the loop. We will start together but each rider can choose their own route and distance. Riders should wear a Rotary cycling jersey. In fulfillment of an RFP requirement as the Beneficiary for the 2022 Tucson Classics Car Show, Kathy Prather, CEO/Superintendent of Joint Technical Education District (JTED), has submitted the following update on JTED’s new Mel and Enid Zuckerman Center for Health and Medical Careers, the second building constructed at the JTED @ The Bridges Campus at 3300 S. Park Ave. The new Center houses JTED’s Licensed Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Health Care Foundations, Pharmacy Technician, Social and Mental Health Technician, and Veterinary Assisting programs. I offer our profound thanks to the Rotary Club of Tucson for sparking the development of the Innovation Learning Center and now for the support of the new Zuckerman Center for Health and Medical Careers.
The two-story, 55,000 square foot building also features The Connie Hillman Family Foundation Community Health and Wellness Center and the Potoff Private Philanthropy Veterinary Sciences Center, home of the student-run Class Pet Pima JTED Veterinary Clinic.
Pima JTED's health professions students are learning advanced patient treatment and life-saving skills on high-fidelity mannequins in the TMC Health Simulation Lab.
The building was built through a joint LLC partnership with Bourn Properties, BFL Construction Companies and Pima JTED for the construction process. The project has received approximately $17 million in private donations and Federal appropriations.
Pima JTED serves approximately 27,000 high school students at nine central campuses and 39 satellite public school locations in an area covering more than 12,000 square miles of Pima, Santa Cruz, and Pinal counties.
The JTED @ The Bridges Campus serves nearly 1000 students who attend late afternoon and early evening classes. Employing a novel approach to potentially serve the needs of the 52,000 high school high school students who live within 25 minutes or less of the JTED @ Bridges campus, Pima JTED partners with the Tucson Unified School District to offer core high school classes during the day. Approximately 365 students are attending TUSD's newest high school, Innovation Tech.
Pima JTED students earn industry certifications and state licenses which lead to direct employment. Research proves that Pima JTED's Career and Technical Education programs also help students achieve greater success in post-secondary education and in their chosen careers.
A $5 million gift from the Zuckerman family was Mel Zuckerman’s last act to advance Public Health, Education, and Medicine in our community before his death in March of 2023. He was the founder of Canyon Ranch, namesake of the University of Arizona’s College of Public Health, and an early promoter of holistic wellness practices.
The Mel and Enid Zuckerman Center for Health and Medical Careers was designed by the same local team that designed JTED’s Innovative Learning Center on the same campus, ShiveHattery Architecture + Engineering.
This JTED project helps address the fact that the U.S. faces a shortage of 6.5 million skilled workers over the next decade in key industries, according to the Association of Career and Technical Education.
