Lt. Gen. Mark D. Kelly is the Commander, 12th Air Force, Air Combat Command, and Commander, Air Forces Southern, U.S. Southern Command, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. Twelfth Air Force ensures the readiness of seven active duty wings and one direct reporting unit for contingency operations, and oversees 14 gained Air Reserve Component units totaling more than 360 aircraft and 20,300 Airmen. As the air and space component to U.S. Southern Command, Air Forces Southern conducts security cooperation and provides air, space and cyberspace capabilities throughout the 31 nations of Latin America and the Caribbean.
General Kelly entered the Air Force in 1986, receiving his commission from the Air Force ROTC program at Southwest Texas State University. He earned his pilot wings at Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. General Kelly has commanded a fighter squadron, two fighter wings, an expeditionary wing and most recently Ninth Air Force. General Kelly is a command pilot with more than 5,500 flying hours, including over 800 combat hours in fighter aircraft. ANDREW MARTIN introduced Major GEORGE ROCHELEAU as our newest member. GEORGE, with his wife Dawn, have had a long and distinguished career with the Salvation Army in California, and are glad to be returning to the Southwest.
Under Announcements, PRESIDENT CLIFF reminded everyone of Rotary Day with the Diamondbacks on September 10th. DAVE GALLAHER announced a great chance to support the Arizona Theater Company (especially if you have a belt sander) painting their new space at the Hotel San Carlos on September 9th, DALE BERG (standing in for MIKE ORCUTT) reminded everyone who has blood of the upcoming blood drive on August 9th, and CHUCK SAWYER and Past President PHIL GUTT described the Sunrise Rotary Road Rally. Trip packages are available that include the Road Rally, hotel accommodations, and admission to the Classics Car Club.
MARCIA KRUMWIEDE introduced today’s speaker by describing her own experiences with integrative medicine and touch healing while dealing with illness. Paul Bucky is the executive director and co-founder of Bio-Touch. He spoke about how we need to reclaim our natural birthright to touch and be touched, and about the great impact touch has had when dealing with the effects of serious illness.
The meeting was closed by PRESIDENT CLIFF with a series of quotes about the difficult obstacles that can be overcome with a well-meaning touch.

With five Wednesdays this month, President Cliff is continuing the tradition of having our 5th Wednesday meeting away from the DoubleTree. Our Social Committee has planned an event on Wednesday, August 30th at the GAP Ministries located at 2861 N. Flowing Wells Road. This function will take the place of our regularly scheduled Wednesday lunch meeting. This is an amazing organization. GAP Ministries is a social service, nonprofit serving Southern Arizona since 1999. Their mission is simple: Standing in the GAP for those in need. Bringing help to children, healing to families and hope to the community. One of their services is to provide care for over 400 foster children annually in family style group homes in Tucson. To better deal with the root causes of the foster care crisis, GAP has begun visitation programs with the birth parents, as well as training and licensing of foster parents. This organization is one of the recipients of our 2017 Car Show proceeds. We hope you and your guest will join us for a fun evening at GAP Ministries. Signups will be up shortly under “Upcoming Events” on our website.
CLUB SERVICE PROJECT AT ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY 330 S SCOTT ON SEPTEMBER 9
There will be a service project on Saturday September 9 from 8:30 to 12:30 AM to help shine up the new offices and balconies in the historic Glenwood Hotel. There will be plenty of opportunities for painting railings and window sills and sanding of floors on the porches. Other small and light chores will be available. On Thursday, July 27 the Rotary Club of Tucson welcomed eight new members and their mentors at the “Special Training for Action in Rotary” (STAR) meeting. New members were welcomed by STAR Chair, Steve Pickering and committee member Diana Cannon. Each new member exchanged information about themselves and why they chose to become a Rotarian.
President Cliff Bowman presented his mission and vision as the new president of our club. Red badge members were provided club information on a variety of subjects such as New Member Expectations, The Rotary Foundation, Ride to End Polio, Tucson Classics Car Show, the RCOT Club Runner Website and a review of current committees open to members.
