Stories
Tucson Jazz Festival
(This lunch meeting will be held outside in the inner courtyard at Hacienda del Sol, please dress accordingly and wear sunglasses.)

In just a few short years, the Tucson Jazz Festival has gone from an idea to a reality.  I’ll explain who we are, where we’ve been and where we’re going.  I might even have a couple of day passes to give out, raffle out or use a quiz prize.

Elliot Glicksman ~ Biography

Elliot has practiced law here for over 41 years. He’s been involved in public service throughout his career.  He was the first Chairman of the Tucson Citizen Police Advisory Committee in 1980.  He has been the recipient of the Arizona AJC Learned Hand Award for Community Service, the Steven M. Gootter Foundation Award for Philanthropy, and the Cystic Fibrosis Breath of Life Award for Community Service.  Elliot was also previously recognized as one of the top pro bono attorneys in Arizona. He has  served on the board of directors and later became President of the Arizona Association for Justice, formerly the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association, and  the President of Homicide Survivors, Inc, a support and advocacy group for families that have experienced unimaginable grief.   For the past 39 years, he’s also done stand up comedy as half of the comedy team, Bob & Bob,  a member of the Sweatlodge with Dave Fitzsimmons, Fish Karma and others, as part of the Arroyo Café Players and as a solo act.

Elliot was one of the founders of the HSL Tucson Jazz Festival, and he’s here today to discuss the festival
Mystery Editor ~ 11/25/20
The holiday season is in the air and we had a fabulous hybrid meeting.

DAN KALM, with State Farm Insurance led us in the pledge and song.  Joined virtually by GARY HIRSCH on piano.  An inspirational video showed the ghosts and ghouls can make a big impact with simple gestures.  A child’s unassuming statement, “I wanted to give back” is something to keep top of mind always.

Welcome to Abby Nagbe, Sandra Solial and Whitney Lennan, who joined us for lunch and may join our club in the future.  Welcome to Tiana Ronstadt and a shout out to all Rotarians and viewers participating virtually.

JEFF RONSTADT, Ronstadt Insurance, introduced our presenter, Jim Turner, a Tucson Historian, who shared fascinating stories in tidbits of the history of Southern Arizona.  “Never trust a man who only knows how to spell a word one way.”  Massacres, apaches, stagecoach robbers and cowboys.

A very Happy Birthday to BRUCE TUNZE, whose birthday 🎂 🍰 was November 24th.

SCOTT VAUGHAN did the Paul Harris presentation that wasn’t.  Both recipients were unfortunately unable to attend at the last minute.  Announcements included the holiday mixer on December 16th to be held on the roof top at Westward Look.  Please register on the club website.  ELLIE PATTERSON presented the presidential citation to BOB LOGAN.  CINDY BARBEE spoke about the Salvation Army and the award our club received for last year’s bell ringing.  She also spoke about the upcoming bell ringing schedule and online campaign.  BOB SHAFF shared a member spotlight on Honorary Member, DORINNA YORK, our very own multi-millionaire, rich in love of family John, Matt and Ashley.

Watch next week for the presentation by Elliot Glicksman, Tucson Jazz Festival.  This will be held outside in the courtyard at Hacienda del Sol.  Thank you to all who participated in person and by viewing online.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Salvation Army Bell Ringing ~ 12/19/20
This year we have two ways to participate in the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle fundraising, the traditional Bell Ringing effort of course and a virtual method.  The COVID 19 Pandemic has posed some challenges for the Salvation Army this year, in regards to the bell ringing both Safeway and Basha's corporate offices will not permit the activity on their property.  So we've had to look at some new and we hope stronger locations, here are the details:

The Rotary Club of Tucson Bell Ringing takes place on Saturday, December 19th.  We have secured three locations this year with the opportunity to get more when we fill these. Each location has three shifts which are 2-3 hours long and have two slots each shift to fill.  You'll be able to start signing up by Tuesday, December 1, 2020.  Look for an email to sign up on our website under “Upcoming Events”. The Salvation Army has provided us with NK95 masks and gloves if you'd like to use them.  We'll bring them by the kettles for your use.

If you would prefer to stay home this year, a virtual Kettle Donation site has been set up.  You will be able to make on-line donations and send the link to friends and family in an email or copy and post it on your social media platforms as well.  We are set up as a team "Rotary Club of Tucson", our link should default to this,  as well as default to your donation going to Salvation Army Tucson.  You can add yourself as a member of the team or just donate.  The link to donate and that you can copy and paste is, https://give-sw.salvationarmy.org/team/331869.  All donations are recognized as being from RCOT and will be combined with our actual kettle bell ringing  collections for a total that we know will benefit the Salvation Army's programs and hope will once again earn us a position as the leader in collection efforts.

Yes, this is a competition as well and we are the reigning champions for Kettle Donations amongst local service clubs and organizations.  This year we are getting a bit of a late start and there are some with a distance ahead of us so we have some catching up to do.  Let's get at it.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact your Kettle Captains Kurtis Dawson, Kurtisd@tucsonymca.org and Cindy Barbee (520)240-6303.
Rotary Around Town
The Valle Verde Rotary Club cordially invites you to Jazz in the Desert Reimagined.  For more than a decade, Jazz in the Desert has been the preeminent fundraiser for the Valle Verde Rotary Club, providing hundreds of thousands of dollars to the music programs of area schools.  This year, however, we will not be able to see & hear these young, talented musicians.  In the absence of a live event, we invite you to join us with your financial support for these music programs by going online to http://vvrotaryfoundation.net/jazz/.
