Months of planning and countless hours of preparation have been invested in our 10th Annual Classics Car Show to make it a 10 and the best in Southern Arizona. During our clubs meeting we will share details of this preparation and discuss some of the gaps that still need our attention in the final week before the show. We will share with you the redesigned Classics Club area, the expanded food tent and some of the exciting Friday Night Pre-Show Celebration Auction items. We will show you the new parking areas and revised traffic flow considerations. We will also focus on our need from members to volunteer for positions that still need to be filled….. so check your calendars, contact your friends and family and be ready to sign-up. We will also give you the latest update on ticket sales and as you have heard several times before…”if we don’t sell, we can’t give”.
This year we look to crack the $1 million mark raised to give back to local charities, an amazing amount that is only possible thru dedicated Rotarians, like you. Thank all of you who have worked so hard all these months and many thanks to the rest that are now stepping up to fill the volunteer needs. Working together, we will make it a 10!
It's our tenth Anniversary of the Tucson Classics Car Show and what a legacy! Our first nine shows generated over $876,000 for our community and we're proud of that since Tucson Rotary had a long term vision from the get go. We knew ten years ago that once would not be enough, so we've expanded year after year from the number of classic cars showcased to the money raised for local charities. I'm reminded of a quote from Jim Carrey: "a lot of good love can happen in ten years."
I think it's a privilege for us to generously support the following charities:
- Make Way for Books’ mission is to give all children the chance to read and succeed. Each year, MWFB serves more than 30,000 children and families and 700 educators.
- Youth On Their Own whose focus is to help at-risk and homeless kids have a chance to stay in school and complete their high school education.
- JTED offers premier, tuition-free Career and Technical Education programs to sophomores, juniors and seniors.
- GAP ministries, an organization that stands in the gap to help entire disadvantaged families heal and have hope for their futures.
- The Haven whose primary goal is to inspire women and their children to live free of alcohol and drugs.
We're now gearing up for the biggest and the best Tucson Classics Car Show and as a reminder, we're all in this together! We're looking forward to our Car Show Chair, the indomitable Steve Pickering, to give us an update at our next Rotary luncheon. But as a reminder now, sign up for the fun Friday night pre-show dinner and silent auction event on October 14, 2016. This is always a dynamically energizing and inspiring way to kick off our Tucson Classics Car Show. Do give it your best shot at selling tickets and let's see if we can pass the $1,000,000 mark of funds that will be distributed to local charities.
Ten Years of Making a Significant Impact in our Community! It’s a Ten!
PRESIDENT ELLIE began our meeting in front of another full house – congratulations Club members.
MARGARET HIGGINS from The Haven gave the Inspiration mentioning a quote from the song “Ebony & Ivory” – Come on America, let’s get along! RUBY PECKFORD sang and PRESIDENT ELLIE PATTERSON played “My Country Tis of Thee”. A little history, the song was written by a student in 1832!
There were no birthdays to celebrate at this meeting but we did recognize our Title Sponsor “WeBuyHouses.com” and MIKE, Susan and Zak Anderson. By the way, MIKE began raising money for our Club’s substantial foundation corpus by raising over $250,000 with the “Win a Dream Home” raffle – thank you MIKE and the whole ANDERSON family!
CAM MOORE introduced the guests with only one verbal mishap – thank you CAM! PRESIDENT ELLIE gave a slide presentation about the Nigerian family Health days. ELLIE raised $2,000 from our Club, $1,000 from the District, and $3,000 from the Rotary World Foundation – yeah PRESIDENT ELLIE.
Our Announcements included Car Show top seller and of course, JERRY HARRIS is on top. JO DECHATELET introduced the new “Haven” facility during the Car Show Minute. PEE CLIFF BOWMAN needs parking volunteers and, RICHARD MUNDINGER and LES SILBERMAN need Friday Night Dinner Auction help.
Finally, our Program act began. Fasten your seatbelts – it’s Fitz! And, true to form, we all had some good laughs. Like when a kid asks why people in the newspaper obituary die in alphabetical order? Fitz then lampooned Hillary and the Donald. Fitz then drew caricatures of Margie Vaughan and JERRY HARRIS, with his cowboy lid. Our meeting was adjourned with a toast from PRESIDENT ELLIE. And a fine meeting it was.
Notice to All Members: Please make sure you have a Club Community Services shirt to wear at the Tucson Classics Car Show. If you do not, please see Jon Wang who will be selling these shirts at upcoming weekly meetings. Thank you!
