Author Cathy Hufault, a former Oro Valley Mayor, will show a video and slide presentation of her book and discuss the story of the largest search and rescue operation in Southern Arizona history. The focus of the epic search was to find three young Tucson scouts lost in the Santa Rita Mountains during a horrific record breaking blizzard. The boys were lost on November 15, 1958 in an unpredicted three to seven feet of snowfall. Nineteen days of intense searching would ensue, captivating all of Arizona who along with the families waited, watched, and hoped.

Cathy Hufault ~ Biography
Cathy, just age 15 at the time of the tragedy, was a sister of one of the Scouts who survived and a friend and classmate of the 16 year old Scout who saved three lives. Her family lived in railroad housing next to the tracks downtown and were an integral part of the church community from which all of the Scouts came. Shortly after the tragedy and inspired by an intense desire to search, she joined the Civil Air Patrol. Other family members as well as many of the searchers also joined rescue organizations. The outdoor component of the Southern Arizona Rescue Association was also formed as a result of the tragedy.
Fifty years later after Hufault had completed several successful careers and two terms as Oro Valley’s Mayor, she decided to undertake her own investigation of what had occurred. In researching her book, Cathy hiked trails in the Santa Rita Mountains and interviewed over 100 people, including Don Carson, the award winning reporter of this 1958 “Story of the Year.” Carson found her account “riveting” and participated in the editing of the book.

PAT ZUMBUSCH gave us several inspiration quotes (which will turn out to be a major theme for the meeting). This mystery editor’s favorite, on leadership, was; ‘You should be much more afraid of a pack of sheep being led by a lion, then a pack of lions being led by a sheep’.
President CHUCK asked for moment of silence to remember the passing of MIKE ANDERSON’s Mother, DON ROLLINGS’ Father, and GEORGE KRUAJA’s wife.
DARRELL STEWART led us in a riveting version of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ accompanied by GARY HIRSCH on the piano.
New member BROOKE FAWCETT introduced our visiting Rotarians and Guests.
Happy Birthday to returning new member JOE DANISZEWSKI, who brought us our second memorable quote of the day, about aging: ‘How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?’
A raffle was held and U of A Basketball tickets were auctioned off.
ASHLEY ELAINE YORK introduced two new members:
BROOKE FAWCETT who appeared at the microphone for the second time today and left us with a third memorable quote, ‘The reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more’.
ASHLEY also introduced RICHARD KELEMAN, who contrary to his current fitness level was a pole vaulter in high school. Welcome to the club BROOKE and RICHARD.
CLIFF BOWMAN presented Paul Harris Fellowships to four deserving rotarians: NANCY PURDIN, KATHLEEN WICKS, JASON GRABOSCH, and DOT KRET.Of course, only one of these four has children that attend a certain local popular (among some Rotarians) high school that shall remain nameless.
Announcements were made by President CHUCK, ELLIE PATTERSON, CLIFF BOWMAN, CHARLOTTE HARRIS, ROBERT O’BRIEN and BRUCE RICHARDSON. Not surprisingly, that same local high school mentioned above was again a featured part of several announcements.
MARK IRVIN introduced our speaker, Ted Maxwell from the Southern Arizona Leadership Council. The SALC was founded in 1997 and has a primary goal of improving the Tucson community through development of effective public policy.
President CHUCK gave the toast and adjourned the meeting a little early.
District Governor Kirk Reed asked us to share with you the below message from District Governor Sandi Schwartz for the Thousand Oaks Area. This message was sent from Sandi the morning of the mass shooting at the Borderline Bar in California:
. . . I woke up this morning to the horrific news of the mass shooting at the Borderline Bar in Thousand Oaks. As far as I know, there were no Rotarians or Rotaractors killed or injured. One of our Rotarian's daughter was at the bar but uninjured. We have two Rotaract Clubs in that area. The site is less than a block from where our Thursday club meets and the roads are blocked so they can't meet today.
Needless to say, the Thousand Oaks area as well as District 5240 are hurting today. Several of you have reached out to ask what you and your Districts can do and I really appreciate your support and concern.
If you would, please ask that Rotarians donate blood today at their local blood banks in the memory of those who lost their lives and honor those patrons and first responders who had witness that terrible scene. One of the deputies who was first to arrive was gunned down and died.
Rotarians have a need to help, that's who we are. So if you could, forward my message on to your membership.
