Stories
BrainSavers, Because Gray Matters
Dr. Paul Bendheim is a board-certified neurologist and a Clinical Professor of Neurology with the University of Arizona, College of Medicine in Phoenix.  Dr. Bendheim graduated from the University of Arizona College of Medicine and is affiliated with Saint Joseph Hospital and Medical Center.  Over the years of his career in neurology, he has diagnosed many people with Alzheimer's and other dementias and became increasingly interested in studying and determining how he could help others to improve and maintain their brain function.

Dr. Bendheim is an authority of Alzheimer's disease and has lectured around the world and has written numerous scientific articles and abstracts on this topic.  He is the author of "The Brain Training Revolution:  A Proven Workout for Health Brain Aging".  He founded BrainSavers, LLC for which he is the Chairman and Chief Medical Officer.  This is a topic which is a key concern for most of us over the age of forty-five and even for those younger who worry about their parents and grandparents.  Dr. Bendheim will share what he has developed to help people who want to improve and retain their brain function as they age.
Mystery Editor - 3/7/18
ANGELA MOORE gave the Inspiration, and BOB WEBB led us in the pledge and song - a rousing version of “You’re a Grand Ole Flag”, accompanied by maestro GARY HIRSCH on the piano. And finally, a big welcome back to JEFF HEATH!

We had one Birthday Rotarian: KIMBERLY ELY, a two-year member sponsored by Past President CHARLOTTE HARRIS who highlighted the legacy of philanthropy and service that drew her to this club.

RON OXMAN introduced our newest member MICHAEL DEEHAN. MICHAEL has a long history with Rotary having participated in the Rotary Youth Exchange in Copenhagen (he’s still in touch with his host family!). MICHAEL works with JW Marriott and has traveled to over 30 countries and crossed the Arctic Circle twice. Welcome MICHAEL!

Past President JON WANG filled in so ably assisting Past President CHARLOTTE with the Paul Harris Presentations that he might have the job permanently! The following members and family members received Paul Harris pins: MARSHALL DENNINGTON, a truly expert HVAC contractor and supporter of other non-profits such as Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers, ALLYN BULZOMI, champion of our Roteract and Interact partners, JACK PARRIS, member of the Arizona TV Broadcast Hall of Fame, his son Pat Parris, and finally President elect elect BOB LOGAN, our Paul Harris Presenter Extraordinaire. No worries, BOB, your job is safe!

Past President SCOTT VAUGHAN introduced our visiting Rotarians and over 50 other visitors who will hopefully consider joining the RCOT.

Sergeant at Arms DALE BERG expertly conducted the raffle and auction (thank you donors). We had the following announcements:

  • President CLIFF reviewed the March Madness results, reminded us of the Trident II Social Mixer 3/8/18.
  • MIKE ORCUTT highlighted the upcoming Community Food Bank work project on March 24.
  • JOHN LEWIS announced our upcoming Home Hospitality week 4/16 – 4/22 and the need for Hosts.
  • MARGARET HIGGINS gave us our final notice to submit candidates for the 4 Way Test and Orville McPherson Awards.
  • MARY MARTIN gave a Happy Jackson for the excellent renovation work completed by SHARON LUDWIG and Three Oaks Development.
  • KATHY KITAGAWA presented a Blue Badge to ASHLEY ELAINE YORK. Welcome ASHLEY!

President CLIFF introduced our Program: “Supersizing Services for Armed Forces Youth and Families”.  President elect elect BOB LOGAN and development guru MARK IRVIN talked about the exciting plans to support airmen and their families at Davis Monthan Air Force Base. The base has repeatedly achieved a designation as one of the most outstanding installations in the U.S.  BOB and MARK are spearheading an effort to create a Youth Center of Excellence that will provide safe, stimulating places for children to have fun on the base. MARK and BOB signed a book for our lending library: “Monkey Not Ready for Kindergarten”.

President CLIFF closed with a toast wishing that all our blessings be some of what we ask and all of what we need.
March Madness is Here!!!
MARCH MADNESS BRACKETS!!
Home Hospitality Hosts Needed

Our Home Hospitality events are scheduled for the week of April 16th through the 22nd and we are looking for members to host during the week.  These social events will replace our Wednesday, April 18th lunch meeting.   If you are interested in hosting a small or large group at your home, place of business or even at a restaurant, please let John Lewis know the date, time, location and the amount of guests you will host.  The Club will provide each host $20 per member/guest that attend your event.  So let's have some fun during this Home Hospitality Week!

4th Annual Rotary Days Service Project ~ 4/7/18
Fourth Annual Rotary Days Service Project Triangle Y YMCA Ranch
APRIL 7 2018 ~ 8:30-4:00

Our fourth annual day of service at the Ranch is open to all Rotarians and friends and families of Rotarians. Please bring your friends and neighbors.  The Ranch has been providing a one week camp experience to under privileged children from Tucson and southern Arizona since 1948 and they need our help.  Please bring the following: sunscreen, hat, landscaping tools of your choice, protective goggles if you have them, weed eater if you have one, and a ladder.  Please put your name on any tools you bring to the ranch.  The maintenance supervisor will have plenty of tools but it always helps to bring some things.

Lunch is included for no charge and will be served at 1:00 PM.  You will have a great opportunity to see all of the ranch facilities.  This is a great opportunity to introduce prospective members to what Rotary is all about.

There is a “Cowboy Night” aka sleepover on Friday night at the ranch.  Modern lodging is available and includes breakfast on Saturday for $35 PP.  We will also have our usual steak and beans dinner for $10 PP.  Thanks again to Chef Darrell Stewart who has helped provide a great dinner the past several years.  You can register on Clubrunner  at the Rotary Club of Tucson website or email Dave Gallaher at dave@tucsonindustrialrealty.com or call 520-907-4983.  There will be carpooling available leaving from the parking lot of Trader Joes at the southeast corner of Oracle and Magee.  Please plan to meet there at 7:30.  It takes about 50 minutes to reach the Ranch from the lot.
