Cultivating an Attitude of Gratitude
Rabbi Stephanie Aaron has led her congregation, Congregation Chaverim, for over 35 years.  Rabbi Aaron is married to fellow Rotarian, Dr Jack Aaron. She has accompanied him on his medical missions to Costa Rica, Brazil and Kenya. She is the mother of four children and she's been blessed with two grandchildren Harry and Aaron. For many years Harry, who is five, was in charge of smiles on the upper West side in Manhattan. Aaron his 18 month old brother, is following in his footsteps. Rabbi Aaron has led trips to Poland and Israel on the journey called the March of the living for the past 16 years. She does this out of her dedication and belief that we must take a stand against prejudice, hatred, violence, bigotry, and discrimination. She is a member of three book clubs, and she is a constant advocate for the power of literacy in all of our lives. Rabbi Aaron enjoys studying Torah, reading, and growing hibiscus and other flowers and plants both indoors and outdoors in her free time. She is proud to be a third generation Rotarian, the first woman in her family to be a Rotarian. Her grandfather, Herbert, of blessed memory, was a founding member of the Phoenix One Hundred. Her father, James, of blessed memory, was a Member of this club for many years. Rabbi Aaron joined our club in 1998; her sponsor was Mort Solot, of blessed memory. She is also a graduate of the University of Arizona.

Before the fall which caused her to have to quit running, Rabbi Aaron and her husband Jack, completed the New York marathon; running together so that she could see and appreciate the city of his birth.
President's Reflections
The sun shone gloriously on Saturday and the wind blew generously as all Rotarians in their colorful End Polio Now jerseys crossed the finish line of El Tour de Tucson. Many of the riders were a little beaten down and exhausted from the generosity of the wind but happy with their completion of the ride.  It was very festive at the Finish Line booth as many members from several clubs gathered around both as volunteers and as supporters to rejoice with the riders. Michael J. Harris, Founder of The Rotary Ride To End Polio, would have been so pleased to see what was achieved in this year’s RTEP Campaign. With over 125 Rotarian cyclists in Tucson and over 400 Indoor riders participating locally and world-wide, almost $9 million of the $10 million goal had been raised as of late Saturday. Rotarians riding in El Tour raised nearly $800,000 toward our challenge to End Polio Now. Many national Rotarian leaders came to Tucson as well as Australian RI President-Elect, Ian Riseley, RI Director, Brad Howard, of Zone 25/26 and RI Director, Jennifer Jones, of Zone 28/29. Each one spoke briefly at the Pre-ride dinner Friday evening and appreciated the crowd’s warm welcome.   Our CEO and past El Tour beneficiary recipient, John Hewko and his wife Marga, along with the RI corporate team, made their annual trip to Tucson and added much fun and levity to the wonderful Friday night program planned and coordinated by Co-Chairs, Gary Hirsch and Darrell Stewart. A big thank you to Gary, Darrell and their Ride To End Polio Committee for doing a fabulous job year after year. It just gets better and better. Thank you Gary and Darrell!

Mike Harris would have been especially pleased at seeing his wife, Charlotte, constantly refilling water bottles of Rotarians and other riders at the Rotary Aid Station and enthusiastically cheering each rider on with: “you’re doing great and you’re almost there!” I’m not sure that met the 4-way test since there were still 27.4 miles to go but hearing the cheers kept us going! Mike’s daughter, Kathleen, and her husband, our PE Cliff Bowman, also worked the Rotary Aid Station. Two sons, Chris and Tim, rode with their respective sons, John and Ash. Mike’s two sisters also did the Indoor Ride as well as helped at the Rotary Aid Station. I wonder if Mike envisioned such a family event, as well as the vast numbers from the family of Rotary—all contributing to The Ride to End Polio in El Tour de Tucson.

I’m sure Michael J. Harris will always be with us in spirit as we Ride To End Polio. I can feel his smile.

Another fabulous RCOT meeting was opened by our one and only PRESIDENT ELLIE (The Temp Connection).

The Inspiration was given by GENE HECHLER.  He spoke about Veterans Day and thanked all past and current military men and women.  The acapella pledge and song was sung by True Concord, David Farwig.  Wow, what a voice – The Star Spangled Banner never sounded so good!  WOCKY REDSAR WIERZBINSKI introduced all our guests.

MARIANNE FREITAS, madam RCOT President 2010-2011 and now retired, celebrated another trip around the sun.  However, no one knows her actual birthdate!

STEVE PICKERING, Mr. Car Show 2016 and now retired, introduced new member KEVIN MARSHALL.  KEVIN once opened a Tax and Relax B&B.  He is a CPA and helped out our other member accountants at the car show.  Thank you KEVIN!

We had four Paul Harris Fellow presentations.  They are as follows:  JERRY HARRIS – Mr. Car Show ticket seller extraordinaire.  JON, will we ever get his last name right, WANG.  He is a former RCOT President, an amazing orthopedic surgeon, and a wonderful man with an all American family history.  Congrats to SUZANNE LAWDER, retired CEO of Goodwill Industries.  And finally, the incomparable MIKE ANDERSON – former RCOT President, our biggest fundraiser Win a Dream Home, which began our million dollar Rotary Foundation Corpus in a big way.  He has sponsored our car show for over four years and has been the RCOT heart and soul spiritually for so many years that one can’t count them all.  Thanks to you MIKE and all the Paul Harris contributors.

The announcements were from JON WANG.  He acknowledged Chip Travers who is a first responder for our club functions.  LISA FOGLE spoke about our upcoming social mixer on November 30th and chili cook off; sign up to attend on Clubrunner.  I believe we need more chili cooks.

Our program was introduced by ELLEN WHEELER.  ELLEN brought us Eric Holtan and “True Concord Voices & Orchestra”.  The group under the name Tucson Chamber Artists began in 2004.  They sang three incredible songs for us.  The middle song sounded like angels in heaven.  These folks have some really good pipes.  They will be playing and singing six programs, 23 concerts at 14 local venues.  You can see their schedule at trueconcord.com.  They are really worth seeing.

The meeting was adjourned by PRESIDENT ELLIE with good wishes for a great ride to end Polio at the El Tour de Tucson.
