President's Reflections

As I look back over the past 6 months and all of the activity that has taken place, I'm so thankful to be a part of this vibrant and committed Tucson Rotary Club.  Our Club does so much for our community and beyond.  Our Club also offers so much for each member. Within our club I see the power of friendship, the opportunity of fellowship and the importance of fun.  We find friendship when sitting by a new member and realizing how much we have in common. Fellowship is found on top of Mt. Lemmon as we work together on a community project sprucing up the Boy Scout camp. Fun is found almost everywhere when members get together whether it’s a meeting, a social mixer, a day working at the Car Show, sharing popcorn at a football game or listening to the latest humorous story a member is telling you while walking out of a luncheon meeting.

We are a Club of doers. We just do things. We do things with our hearts, with our hands and with our minds. Let's take a look at the beginning of this New Year at some of the things we have done so far at mid-point of our Rotary year:

  • Gained twelve new members, two of them being family members.
  • Completed a highly successful 10th Annual Car Show with the proceeds benefiting our new primary beneficiary, Make Way For Books. Other beneficiaries are Youth On Their Own, JTED, Gap Ministries and The Haven. We may well pass the 1 million dollar mark with this year’s results in fundraising. Tucson Classics Car Show-10 years strong.
  • Hired a part-time assistant. Welcome Kari!
  • Participated in a works project-beautifying the Camp Lawton Boy Scout Camp on Mt. Lemmon with chopping, hammering, painting, sweeping, spraying, sawing, etc.
  • Enjoyed two 5th Wednesday replacement meetings, the first at Molinitos and the second at CAID Industries.
  • Raised more than 11.3 million dollars, with the Gates Foundation match, in our Ride To End Polio. Many of our club members were riding, volunteering and raising funds.
  • Named our President-Elect-Nominee, Chuck Sawyer.
  • Elected three new board members, Peter, Dave and Tom.
  • Participated in social outings which included hiking the Grand Canyon and Havasupai, as well as cheering at both the Tucson Roadrunners Hockey Game and the Arizona Bowl.
  • Entered into the festive mood of the holiday season by ringing the bells for the Salvation Army and delivering presents on bicycles to South Tucson Fire Dept.
  • Became the primary international partner for the Global Grant that participated in Nigeria Family Health Days.
  • Sponsored two students by partnering with TRVFA. Continued financial support of students at both PCC and U of A.
  • Enjoyed a fresh new website look. More to come.
  • Completed two STAR Trainings.

In looking ahead to the next six months, members will, hopefully, experience:

  • A new format and more varied content of our Tucsotarian.   The President’s Reflections will be a monthly contribution instead of weekly allowing more room for members’ activities, profiles, current Rotary news and other tidbits.
  • A monthly community service project.
  • Growth in membership.
  • A monthly Happy Hour where members can network and enjoy fellowship in a relaxed environment. Bring a potential member! Last Thursday of the month.
  • Increased activity in our Social Media program. We welcome volunteers.
  • Participation in EREY and the Centennial Campaign.
  • Improvements in Club Culture based on member surveys.

And now, as Porky Pig said: "That's All Folks."

Except for one more thing- I want to personally wish each and every one of you a Happy New Year! Let's look forward, with hope and accomplishment, to continue making our Club the best Rotary Club ever.  Ending on a healthy, partially “humorous” note…..

Tucson Roadrunners Hockey
How thrilling to watch an exciting hockey game as the Bakersfield Condors fell to our Tucson Roadrunners in overtime with a final score of 5 to 4 on December 21, 2016.  Almost all 50 Rotarians and friends donned their Roadrunners ball caps which were included with the ticket as part of the group promotion and cheered the Roadrunners on to victory while keeping time to the hockey music playlist that evening. The new arena look and upgrades were enjoyed by all. It’s a gorgeous facility and the menu selections were fantastic. When did fish tacos become part of the menu at a hockey game? Wow! It was a very fun evening and definitely worth repeating.

D5500 The Rotary Leadership Institute
On January 21, 2017 at the Viscount Suite Hotel, 4855 East Broadway, there will be the D5500 Rotary Leadership Institute beginning at 7:15 am with registration and continental breakfast. The Rotary Leadership Institute is a training program established to improve the Rotary knowledge and leadership skills of the future leaders of Rotary clubs. RLI is a great place to start for a new Rotarian looking to find out more about the wonderful world of Rotary and how they may play a bigger part if desired. It is also a great way to learn more in-depth knowledge of Rotary. The exchange of ideas with other experienced Rotarians makes it extremely worthwhile.

The cost is $60.00 which includes breakfast, lunch and materials and each member attending will be reimbursed. Please contact Dorinna or Ellie for more information. Deadline is January 15, 2017.
2nd Annual Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl
The Rotary Club of Tucson showed up to support the 2nd annual Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl in force: 56+ tickets to members, family and friends.  Our seats in the north end zone were great: backed seats with cup holders looking straight at the huge video screen and immediate access to all concessions and restrooms.  The whole Air Force Academy parachute team dove into the stadium right over our heads --  what a thrill!  The National Anthem was beautifully sung and was punctuated by a rousing Davis Monthan A-10 flyover.  So we were fired up to cheer on the USAFA Fighting Falcons.  The east stands were filled with crazed Air Force blue clad fans.  But then the S Alabama boys misread the script and hit a 75 yard touchdown bomb on the first play!  Then it was 21-3 ‘bama before we could devour Ed Cole’s bag of kettle korn.  What?!  Order was eventually restored and USAFA won the day 45-21.  Whew!  The best news was that the Tucson community came out in support with an announced attendance of about 33,000, more than 15 or 20 other longstanding bowl games this year, so congrats to the AzBowl committee, including our own Mark Irvin, for their outstanding efforts.  The event was surely a boost to our Tucson economy in general and the net proceeds will be more than welcomed by our local charities!  Go Air Force!
